Really really really like this one! Thanks so much for the recommendation!! The stress level of this game raises as the cards get played, which drives this up very high on my list. This is my #3 trick-taker!
Here I am, ten months after my previous posting, now the proud owner of Voodoo Prince. I really love this game, it has just enough to keep seasoned "tricky" players interested, but not enough to totally overwhelm players new to the genre. I have two problems with the game however, one you'll be able to help me with, the other will require me finding a copy of Marshmallow Test. Where you can help me, for some reason I'm not totally clear on one rule: if a player wins the last trick required to complete his/her hand with a 5 or 7, splitting the trick in two and giving them one trick more than required, are the tricks totalled as normal, counting the extra trick into the total, or are only the tricks win by the other players counted and those the player win, ignored? In the example in the rules it says: "By taking the last trick with her blue 5 she now has 4 tricks, even though the required number of tricks for a 4 player game is actually 3. Nina's round is now over. She receives the points corresponding to the number of tricks that the other players have won up until this point. Now Marie, the next player in a clockwise direction, plays the first card of the next trick." So no points for the tricks Nina scored then? The other problem is a couple other players in our group are devout Christians, and that's absolutely fine with me, but they won't touch this "Devil's game", for any reason, literally won't even touch the cards! SO if I can get Marshmallow Test, that should keep everybody happy.
Hey Warriorking, glad to hear the game is great for both pros and newbies! Those 2 questions are really good. As to the first, I've hit that same issue and couldn't find much online about it. My group plays where the two tricks are split, so a player can have 4 tricks and that can give other players more points. Hope that helps and marshmallow test is great for that second situation. Cheers!!
I found this game when I saw that there was a trilogy of Royal Horror Trick Taking games. My group loved Skull King and Vampire Queen so I had to get this to complete the set. This didn’t get played as much as the others but watching this review made me want to get it out again! I think that this does have that push and pull of when to get tricks but it feels like it happens closer to the end of the round after one person goes out. Before then I’m typically trying to lose hands because I know I will get a few by default. But when players get knocked out, less cards in the trick means you may get stuck playing low or off suit and losing for the rest of the round. Thanks for the review!
Hey Shawn, thanks so much for such a kind comment!! 😊😁 This whole trilogy is stellar and all play so well with higher player counts. You've totally nailed the tension! I love games that have that inevitability built right in. Perfect tension! Thanks again for the nice words and I hope you get a chance soon to replay it! 😊😊
I've been waiting for you to do this one. I love the theme in this. Not a fan of the retheme to Marshmallow Test. Great explanation too! you cleared up some questions we had.
Thanks so much Jason!!😁🙌 Yeah, the artwork here is much better than the aesthetics of Marshmallow Test, which are pretty basic.. Glad to help out and thanks so much for the kind comments!!
Tichu and Bottle Imp are the only tricktaking games I own. They introduced me to this amazing genre. Stoked to find your channel and the other trick taking games I know nothing about, Liked and Subbed. I'll be looking out for the marshmallow test vid, Can't find Voodoo Prince on Amazon as of july 2021
That's so awesome to hear, Joshua!! 🤩🙌 Those two are fantastic and, I think, great intros to this fun and growing genre. Thanks so much for such a nice comment!! Hmm, yeah looks like voodoo is our of print possibly, but I hope to have a comparison soon 😁Thanks again!!
I don't think I've said this before, but I really do enjoy this channel! You're showing me games I'd probably never heard of before, although sometimes you then set me off on wild goose chases, trying to find copies to buy, Jokaru is a case in point, although I may have found a copy the owner might part with. You also have a really cool way of explaining how the game works, even morons like me can follow your instructions. This one looks like you've just started another wild goose chase... what a terrific game! I haven't looked to see if you've posted the video you mentioned doing in this one, comparing Voodoo Prince to Marshmallow Test, but assuming you hadn't this game and couldn't find it, would you say MT is worth purchasing, or would you wait for a copy of VP to become available? A truly great video mate, keep 'em coming!
Hey Warriorking, that is just sooooo awesome to hear!! Ahhh thanks a million of such kind words; it means a lot!! 😁🤩🙌 So sorry for the wild goose chases! I feel so bad for covering such hard to find games! I'm glad that I don't have the worst explanations! That's always something I'm worried about, so thanks for that! As to that VP vs. MT question, I'd say that the games do feel similar and you can get the same amount of fun out of both, so I'd personally be ok just playing MT if VP is tough to find. It's a tough call for sure though!
Have you thought of covering the other two games in the Schmidt lineup? (Vampire Queen, Skull King) We had enough people to play Vampire Queen this last weekend and we liked it so much more than we thought we would.
I have yet to play Vampire Queen because it looks to benefit from a higher player count that my group hasn't managed yet, but I really hope to! That's great to hear that your group liked it! How many players did y'all have? Also, I love the designer, so it should be a hit. As to Skull King, it's possibly one of my favourite trick-takers. I love the building tension and the bidding. Makes for a great time! I gotta do a video soon for sure. Thanks so much for the comment, Jason!! 😁🙌
@@ClaudeAndTaylor we had 6 players and it was a great shedding game. We tend to lean more toward games that are an easy explanation, and this one was laid out quite well in the rules. We love Skull King as well.
It's pretty out of print sadly.. There's Marshmellow test, which is a bit similar. I've seen copies of voodoo prince in Japanese stores, if you wanted to pay more. Maybe jelly jelly?

Excited to see the comparison :)
Totally! I think I'm a bit late on them, but they're coming!

Can you still get this game anywhere?
