    Hey Taylor, I dont know if you read these, but a friend of mine got 9 lives on my recommendation after I saw this review, we have both been enjoying it extensively and I wanted to thank you for the great content! Cheers from Argentina!

    Oh boy, definitely backing. I'm so interested in figuring out the strategy for the winner picking a card from the trick. Your explanation of why every card matters was fantastic.

    I'm really happy to be able to get a copy of this. It's great the BGT is publishing these difficult to get games.
    On the game itself - there is no zero space on the rug. Which must have been an intentional decision by the designer. Do you find that a zero bid is never something someone would want? Or so rare that it would make the game worse to include it?

    • @ClaudeAndTaylor
      @ClaudeAndTaylor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh totally, Shrey!!
      I should have been more clear, sorry, but you can't bid zero. I've found that getting at least 1 trick isn't too tough and I think the designer likes the idea of players competing over bidding placement rather than not winning any tricks. It definitely makes for more interactive hands!

    Great video and what a beautiful production of an already great game. I adore the art. The tighter bidding chart materialized as that big luxurious rug is a definite improvement for me. I do wish they would index the cards in all four corners. It is a huge turnoff for me when card games don't. I also wish that the designs on the card backs that are intended for color blind friendliness were a little more distinctive. Your copy has an additional stripe along the left that the KS images don't show. I worry that they won't be differentiable at a distance. Also, the box is an odd shape and seems overly large. They need somewhere to put all those lovely bits they added, but I want my trick takers to be compact and uniform in size. I would have been happier with a normal double-deck box with just some extra height to fit the added components.

      Hey Corey, we did put the numbers and suits on both top corners for left and right handed accessibility, but we wanted the cat art to stand out and be as big as possible it just didn’t pop scaled smaller. So I do understand that you need to quickly orientate the cards when you’re dealt but it’s not too bad. The card backs were 100% redesigned from this prototype and have an all over print for the card suit and it creates very unique negative space making the card backs very distinct for colorblind people. Also all our small box games are sized to this scale and the components fill it well.

      @@joewiggins5251 Hi, Joe. Thanks for your response and all the work by the BGT team to make this game available to the US market. I really do love the art, and I can understand wanting to highlight it, but that doesn't really trump the need for fully indexed cards IMO. I've played enough games done that way to know that I don't like it. Anyways, I'm glad you have the color blindness issue worked out. We have several folks with color blindness in my game club and it really does make a difference for them. A box is just a box and can be changed if needed. Good luck on your Kickstarter!

      @@ClubRemy Hey Corey, sorry for the delay!! As Joe mentioned, there's some redesigns from the video that helps mend this issue. I'm also a bit fan of the 4 corner indexes, but I totally get the compromise. I'm glad more publishers are looking for ways to make the game more accessible and player-friendly! So rad!

    Would you recommend this game as a means to learning trick taking games?
    I have a friend who cannot wrap his head around trick taking games so far. He does not grasp which card to play in a lot of situations, does not find the nuances when to not take a trick, when to get rid of a certain color and so on. He obviously loses most of the time and it is frustrating for him.
    I thought, maybe 9 Lives, with
    - the card backs revealing more information and also
    - that you are basically always interested in taking a trick,
    this could make it easier to start out with trick taking games?
    I would appreciate to hear your opinion.
    Which trick taking game would you recommend for players to learn trick taking?

    • @ClaudeAndTaylor
      @ClaudeAndTaylor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Sir Galahad, thanks a ton for the comment!
      That's an interesting question for this game as I can totally see the logic:
      Seeing card backs help teach players following suit easier. You can let them know "hey, I played a blue suit, and you have 2 blue cards, so you'll play one of those now"
      I think being always interested in every trick is also a great intro part because the game never lacks.
      The two things I see being hiccups, possibly, to using 9 Lives as an intro trick-taking game:
      There are quite a few twists/hooks with the card backs, looping, bidding, and taking a card back. This may be a bit overload, but definitely depends on the player!
      The other hiccup is I tend to shy away from teaching new trick-taking players any trick-taking game that has betting/bidding because I've found it's hard to learn a game where it asks the player to evaluate their hand right away without knowing the game.
      My perfect intro trick-taker is either Voodoo Prince, The Crew, or Boast or Nothing. They have simple hooks and keep players engaged!
      That said, 9 Lives could totally work as an intro if the new players are up for the twists, in fact that could grab them more, so it's possible!

      @@ClaudeAndTaylor Thanks for your opinion.
      I can say that the bidding aspect is not one of the biggest problems. It also creates an element of chance at the table which makes the game feel less punishing for newer players. Even though a less experienced player might find themselves overloaded in evaluating their hand, an experienced player might still lose by missing their bid. I've seen this many times when playing Wizard that the "best" players don't always win. Even though Wizard is not the most enticing game, people with no trick taking experience seem to enjoy it and I can enjoy playing with them.
      The overall goal of 9 Lives (and Wizard) "score as many tricks as you bid" is simple and a rewarding challenge for any player, new or experienced.
      You might be correct on the looping and taking a card back aspects. This can make it complicated to map out your game plan. However, I don't see it as a big detriment to newer players. It's quite clear what happens when you win/lose a trick. It's just hard to wrap around for them what that entails.
      I've looked at your suggestion of Voodoo Prince and I thought "classic Knizia - clever scoring rules". I will try this one because it sounds way more interesting than Wizard while keeping the goal of the game still fairly simple and the rules are straightforward, too.
      Eventually I will still get 9 Lives, not only because it sounds so interesting, but also because I want to see if it can be a go-to game also for teaching trick taking games.

      Oooo, great question! I like 4 because I'm a maniac for tight bid blocking, but 3 is more loose and flexible if you prefer that!
