The reason why ASEAN is successful is because we realize that we are small nations (unlike China and USA or any powerful countries in the world) and together we are stronger. It's not like each of ASEAN members are weak, but we rather not to fight in unnecessary conflict. Instead of rivalry we see our neighbors as friends and brothers, we help each other economically, helping each other grow and protect each other.

Containment of communism was never a purpose of ASEAN, Just stability in all aspects of life, it was the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization or SEATO that have that kind of purpose, under the leadership of the United States of America. The Southeast Asian Region was on a political turmoil, not just Vietnam, also Cambodia, Burma, now known as Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia and The Philippines, Burma and Cambodia suffering internal political debacle while Malaysia, Indonesia and The Philippines arguing over territory in the island of Borneo which led to the idea of cooperation that gave birth to ASEAN, containment of communism is not a purpose of ASEAN but SEATO's

Anthony Nasudman true, during the makings of ASEAN, indonesia is still under the influence of both the Soviets and the american (with both ideologies are rejected by the indonesian govt) so "containing communism" isn't really a thing
But it actually did, kind of, most of the 5 nation is later "kind of" more oriented to the west including indonesia, so it was never intended, but happened anyway

Well as a starting government we all needed to look up to possible goals or should I say physically achieved goals, and the west is on the lead compared to the east, the term west and east doesn't refer to directions but to two different ideologies, socialism and capitalism, west meaning capitalism and east meaning socialism, either way capitalist countries during the cold war rise faster than the east so for starting countries like the southeast asian countries picking capitalist and democratic ideology was the best move we can take

Indonesia during the 1960s doesn't have the capacity to dominate the south east asian region not because it is a weak country but because it is surrounded by countries with the same capacity if not stronger countries meaning it is not possible for Indonesia to establish hegemony in the South East Asian Region.

thesillentman07 ...indonesia becomes more "western aligned" not because its own will, but because civil wars and the our country's dictator regime-backed by US with their CIA operation to topple soekarno who are deemed "too willful/unruly" and keep nagging that Indonesian natural resources should be for indonesian people welfare. Just like in Iran and middle east. It was sheer luck we survived the constant bullying from 1945 untill now...

arif mark007 What I meant was Malaysia is very diverse. They have many multiple dialects and languages spoken. Different races exist as well. Singapore, on the other hand, has different races but it feels like a mixture between the East and West. So in that sense, Singapore isnt truly Asia
