About the Indonesia proverbs... "Rice has turned into porridge" means something important has happened and it's irreversible. "There's prawn hiding behind rock" means there's ulterior motive behind sweet words and gifts "Tigers die because of their stripes" I actually haven't heard of this one. The closest one I think is "when elephant dies, it leaves tusk, when tiger dies, it leaves stripes", which means when one leaves, retires, or passes away, they would be remembered by their past achievements.
I think it's from “harimau mati karena belangnya” which is a direct translation from “tigers die because of their stripes” it means when you display your abilities or strength, it can result in being pursued or targeted
Actually it was translated as it should be and not being reinterpretated, I respect that. Those proverbs doesn't lose it's meaning being translated as is and easily understandable to those who are not familiar with it.
I feel like my nationalistic indonesian self is slowly fading away cause i only know a couple of those proverbs and not know the others even in my own native language

Indeed, I truly hope Indonesia is staying neutral, nothing good comes from war, besides we as indonesian already have a mountain of problems in our country, we don't need another headache 😂
That’s a great philosophy. As an Australian, we followed that and mostly lived pretty care free. We have relied quite a lot on the US for our security and have essentially been kind of obliged to help support military operations, some of which have turned out to be misguided to say the least. Most Australians are very friendly and respectful (sorry for some of us who are drunk jackasses in Bali). Generally from individual people up to national level we try to uphold fairness and respect for others. Over the last two decades we have sometimes got involved in things I think we should have stayed out of and apart from the damage of war, It’s also made our friends with everyone idea a little harder. We have had a mostly very beneficial relationship with China. However, they have been trying to dominant us covertly and overtly for a long time. We had to stand up for ourselves and Its cost us, but I think it was worth it. I hope Indonesia can stand shoulder to shoulder as friends who support each other when needed. Vietnam is in a similar situation to Indonesia. We count Vietnam as friends too. Not every country needs to be publicly aligned with China or the US but if we stand up for ourselves when bullied it’s better for all of us. It disappoints me when the US doesn’t always uphold the fairness and justice for all that it claims. We are mostly aligned with them but they are a bully too. If I have to choose the US bully or the CCP, I’ll take the US any day. China is seeking world dominance and I don’t think that will be fun for anyone. Most Australians don’t want to spend hundreds of billions on defence, but China has shown what they think of us “Australia is chewing gum on China’s shoe”. It’s a shame, the Chinese I know are mostly very nice and hard working people. No counties really want to get pulled into conflict with the US and China, but being defenceless it’s a great option either. Best wishes and respect from Australia. 🇮🇩🇦🇺 ✊

In my view, Indonesia is a great example of a country that knows how to grow while staying true to its values. Even though most people in Indonesia are Muslim, they respect all religions. They don’t like racism and see it as a threat from outside. In the world, they try to help others without letting anyone take advantage of them. All of this is because of Pancasila, their guiding philosophy. It shows us that we can all live together happily and keep getting better.

As an Indonesian, I think we see more Chinese investment (largest concrete batching plant in the eastern Indonesia) compared to US investment. What I know currently: We've been asking Freeport for smelters for years but Chinese built theirs first. (I got a small part of the offer but they asked for a very high initial investment, so I declined) Freeport expands their smelters but very slowly, while Chinese made industrial complexes in Java.
Chinese are like herds of Locus. They will consume everything in the path. As im writing these comments right now. there are a bunch of Chinese Fishermen illegally fishing in Indonesian waters and anywhere in the world. you can see them as far as the coast of South America. Remember all those Pangolins that were taken from Indonesia. Chinese consume everything.
Officially, Indonesia’s geopolitic stand is neutral. But I think in the near future the president elect Prabowo will have tendency to allign Indonesia more closely to the West. Afterall, he came from military background and have had counter terrorism course in West Germany (1981) and special forces training at Ft. Benning in US (1981). Great Analysis btw
Yes, but just because a president has had experience training in western country doesn’t mean he’s siding with the west. Indonesia is now capable of becoming a player. Fascinating. My father worked in Indonesia, and I lived there for three years before I finished highschool. I was unaware of its broader history and importance.

Indonesia has their own recent, yet growing high tech or high end consumer goods markets that are beginning to break into US/EU Markets. I bought a set of high end speakers drivers and tweeters from an Indonesian company called SB Acoustics a while back. SBA is a branch of Sinar Baja Electric. Their speakers are good. They can compete with some of the best of what the US or EU has to offer and the prices are lower, or were. While it is certainly true that Indonesia relies on China or the US for a lot of trade they also have their own domestic goods and services markets that are growing and not reliant on anyone else. They're spending on education and research. They have a lot of well educated people with big ambitions to do their own thing and they're doing it. I don't think this is going to turn out to be your typical client state type arrangement like it was in the 60's. There's almost nobody that can compete with the US, EU or Japan in high end audio. It says a lot that they were able. Especially on their first attempt as far as I know.
The reason why the US and EU are opening their markets is the same reason as why China invests so heavily in Indonesia keep taking advantage of all these opportunities and they'll probably become the Next India or Japan if they're able to deal with their Insurgents in Papua and keep their constitution from being influenced negatively by China or the US.
Note that the Indonesian constitution mandates a "free and active" foreign policy, which has traditionally been interpreted as a ban on binding military alliances (and also a prohibition against isolationism, but that's a different kettle of fish). So it's pretty hard for the Indonesian government to _not_ sit on the geopolitical fence without violating their own constitution.

I hope that Indonesia sticks with the US and our allies but they have to do whats best for them. Average Americans are not represented well by our leaders sadly, i fear we get a poor reputation abroad for this reason.
Indonesia's foreign policy is "independent and active". So, Indonesia never "sticks" to USA. In a nutshell, Indonesia opens for everyone. Sadly, we are watching that China is making a massive economic movement in Indonesia, so naturally Indonesia's economily will be more influenced by China, at least for now. China are having massive expansion in SEA while the biggest US expansion in SEA is... building more military base in Philliphines. Won't say it is wronf but you see the priority here.... China wants to control the world by creating dependencies while USA wants to control the world by military. And I just realized that while Indonesia is neutral, surrounding countries are basically with USA.
@Dominus_Potatus well yes, I understand the neutrality, I meant "stick with" as in "stay positive with, work actively with". As stated in the video, a official stance of neutrality makes sense. I just love that country and would hate any type of adversarial stance. It makes sense for Indonesia to do what is best for them, as we would as well. Why choose a side in a political standoff when you can gain from both, it makes complete sense.

There's a 'very high' chance that a war will start, with Indonesia as the center of the conflict" It was around 2016-17 then. Similar statements have been said by other instructors with more detailed and different reasoning, spanning from economic, military, and even cultural reasons. They also have similar opinions that the main 'Actors' in the conflict would be US and China. Interestingly, they have different opinions on whose side Indonesia would be when such major conflict happens. Some even believe that Indonesia would still choose to remain neutral, practically donning the status of a 'Swing State' throughout the escalating conflict. All in all, their statements boil down to a single fact, "Indonesia is a hot potato" This is despite a well-known fact that Indonesia isn't 'that' well-known by the global populations. It's actually funny how most people outside of Indonesia that I've met or talked to, either only know about Bali as a vacation spot or didn't know about Indonesia at all besides, "It's a country". Kind of delusional and ironic that the Dutch who were under German occupation during WW2, thought they could go on ruling over Indonesia. Same for the French with Indochina
A lot of Sultan and King in Netherland Indies were afraid with the left tendency of Indonesia. And there were attack to their families by the extreme left. The Dutch believed they could exploit that fear. Hatta, the 3rd Prime Minister, however, pulled Indonesia to the central position, builded communication with US, acknowledged the state led by those royalties. Without Hatta, either Dutch succesfully ruled back Indonesia or USSR controlled Indonesia.
After the war the Dutch just should have moved a way. But there were to many economic and emotional reasons to hold on. And after a few centuries they really saw it as their homeland. I’m from Dutch/Indonesian decent and my grandmother was sad about it until her death 40 years later.
The video encompasses a good range of nuances that explains our approach in the current geopolitics, but what's missing here is Indonesia is just as suspicious to the US as we do to the Chinese. Soeharto, the longest reigned dictator in Indonesia is, in a sense, a fanboy of the US. It is under his rule that the infamous Freeport is sucking up Papua's mountain dry without enriching the country in return for decades just like what happened in Africa. Many even believed that the US is behind many of the suppression by mass murders starting from 1965, as mentioned in the book "The Jakarta Method". In a sense, it's not too crazy to assume that Soeharto's authoritarian rule was "allowed" by the US for decades since it could suppress soviet influence in the region, along with persecuting Chinese ethnicity at the same time, a complete fun package. So the concern of foreign intervention runs deep within every fabric of our policy. It is hard to imagine the days when we will align ourselves as allies to any sides of international conflict, we had enough fill of colonialism and neo-colonialism after all.
centuries of being colonized still practically left scar inside each and every indonesian, we didnt like foreign government to involved with our bussiness

@@Taskandpurpose it sure is there, but it makes it seems like it's just a one off thing. What makes us really suspicious is that it happens many, many times, for a long, long time. The fact that we are helpless about Freeport for decades (only able to pressure them to rewrite the contract) only a few years ago is the prime example of it. There are tons of other different anecdotal instances as well, but yeah.

Why do you Westerners want Asians to choose sides? Didn't Indonesia clarify by going with China over Japan on the High-Speed Rail? China and Indonesia are big trading partners. Indonesia has what it takes to be the world's top ten economies. What can the US offer Indonesia other than trouble?
Indonesia is a brave & smart country in Asia, they blocked Chinese military ships, coast guards & fishermen's from entering their water territories before the Chinese tried to build any artificial islands. No talks just actions.
One of your best videos to date. I have a long extensive experience in that region and I think you're spot on with your comments. That delicate balance of power with Indonesia will be a key factor in future conflicts in that region.
As Indonesian, I think my country effort to keep geopolitical balance in the region can only become much more difficult in coming years and it is going to be interesting to see how our newly elected President Prabowo (who is pretty much Jokowi’s protege) will be able to navigate Indonesia in this stormy Cold War 2.0 situation. Also as somebody who still involved in domestic defence industry, one key thing that could probably trigger a major shift in the future is our desire to possesed and to be self reliant in highly strategic defence capabilty. We already ventured in super costly “trial and error” acquisition projects with South Korea in submarine and 4.5 gen fighter jets programes. We had also initially tried to lobby Washington for possible F-35 acquisition but got snubbed and offered F-15EX instead. The recent decision to purchase Rafale jets from France is also partly stemmed from strange pattern of thinking in our top decision maker that we should never allow over reliance on single country or manufacturer, which this is mostly a reflection of our trauma of receiving US embargo in the past and also the fact that US CAATSA has succesfully influenced cancellation of our Su-35 acquisition from Russia and furthermore raising question on how Indonesian Air Force would be able to maintain operation of its Su-27/30 fleet in foreseeable future. Bottom line is, while China is a supreme economic partner of Indonesia, I think US and its allied still hold a significant upper hand in influencing Indonesia leadership in defence and security issue. However, with its already massive contribution in excelling Indonesia economy and industrialization effort in relatively short period of time, it is not hard to imagine when China could swiftly start to influence Indonesia Security policy for their benefit. If in the future China and Indonesia are engaged in acquisition planning of something like Type 052 destroyer (which Indonesian Navy has expressed their interest lately), the offset realization could potentially be much more interesting based on cost factor and exisiting industrial co-operation platform
I find Indonesia's growing military strength and strategic importance fascinating. With a massive military of 400,000 personnel and a 20% increase in defense spending, they're definitely not to be underestimated.
Yeah But You Also Need To Consider How Many From 400K Fit For Duty Because Indonesia Retirement Age For Soldier Is 58 For Officer And Non Officer Is 53,While Neighbouring Country Retirement Age Is 65 For Officer, And Non Officer Retirement Is 45

About the Indonesia proverbs...
"Rice has turned into porridge" means something important has happened and it's irreversible.
"There's prawn hiding behind rock" means there's ulterior motive behind sweet words and gifts
"Tigers die because of their stripes" I actually haven't heard of this one. The closest one I think is "when elephant dies, it leaves tusk, when tiger dies, it leaves stripes", which means when one leaves, retires, or passes away, they would be remembered by their past achievements.
Tigers die(hunted) for their stripes in this case Indonesia's strategic position really attracted both sides

I thought about putting what their meanings are but figured that might be too much so I really appreciate the details here
Harimau mati karena belangnya.
Celaka karena sombong/pamer kelebihan.

Very impressive summary. We have lived in Indonesia for 15 years and many would agree with this nutshell análysis, so well done!
Lots of mistakes in this video.
The video tried to avert the fact that Indonesia uncovered evidence that the US along with UK deliberately instigated the Indonesian Genocide.
I did a research project on Indonesia in school. An utterly fascinating country. One of the most diverse and incredible countries ive read about.
Depends, if Papua insurgency can be solved I can see that. But so long Aussie is still playing, I cannot see it.
Why choose a side in a political standoff when you can gain from both, it makes complete sense.
yeah...sometimes i observe video in youtube ..people in the USA majority does not know country outside US
@@MarwanSiregar-x9f well, you cannot believe youtube. The US, like Indonesia is vast, varied, and unique depending on your location. From what I see and learn about the foreign policies of countries in the world... in my view Indonesia is a country that is most difficult to predict regarding economics and politics.. No one knows that Indonesia has now advanced far without us knowing. Indonesia has a strong state principle of BHINNEKA TUNGGAL IKA, they don't think about foreign influences Because of past history... they have their own principles of life which are an example for many countries, but not a single country in the world can implement what Indonesia has.

As an Indonesian, I am happy that you use our proverbs. I never thought they would sound so nice in English!
As an Indonesian who studied International Relationships, I still remember that an instructor of mine back in uni have stated, "In 10 years, more or less.
So I'm very thankful for the video as it gives more awareness towards Indonesia.
Our Founding Fathers taught us to be a "Non-Block Nation" since the Cold War era. So this mindset have always been in our people mindset till now.

The Dutch believed they could exploit that fear. well researched and made video
I love how you went from military strategy to geopolitics and execute so beautifully

It will be a nightmare in getting the maintenance and spare parts given how many different countries all the equipment comes from

as an Indonesian subscriber of yours, its nice to see our history being delivered in quite detail well enough to give context for your verdict. Kudos for doing the research and even going as far to translate some of our famous proverbs. Culturally we are a peace loving people and not a conquest-type civilization, however as the 1940s show we aren't afraid to get bloody for our rights. I hope the new regime (we just finished election) can maintain our neural stance in foreign policy. Wishing the best for the future.
as an indonesian, would you still like to be neutral if china does not have money for investment in indonesia?
Big salute to you maam!!! From the philippines 🇵🇭..
