When I was very young and naive, I dated a guy that told me that his mom would always come first for him. I, being very young and naive, thought, “Oh, he really loves his mom! That’s sweet!” and didn’t see it as a red flag. He ended up taking his mom out to dinner on my birthday and completely forgot about my birthday. I needed heart surgery at one point. He was allowed in the room before I was put under and once I woke up. But he wasn’t there either time because his mom wanted him to take her shopping. I got promoted at my job, and we went out to celebrate. He left in the middle of dinner to unclog his mom’s toilet. At 19 years old, he was also constantly hugging and kissing on his mom. In a weird way. He ended up breaking up with me because his mom wanted him to be a Catholic priest so no woman stole him from her. I never spoke to him again, and I learned my lesson. But I occasionally stalk his mom on Facebook. He actually did become a priest. His mom is constantly whining on Facebook on how the Church is constantly moving him around, so he’s never near her. And how the Church won’t let her live with him. And how he isn’t paid enough to financially support her. Like, this is the path that YOU wanted him to take, and it’s pretty clear that being a priest would entail him moving around and being unable to care for you financially. You made your bed, now lie in it.
I do hope he’s happy being a priest though. I don’t know if it was something he wanted, but I hope he’s happy with it. I do think it was good for him in a way because it forced him to distance himself from someone who I could tell was emotionally abusing and manipulating him. She’s clearly a narcissist. She got divorced when he was really young, and she essentially forced him to become like her husband. I hope he’s doing good now. And I learned my lesson to not be with a guy that puts his mother above our relationship.

@@goldengirlxee3831 It is! She also has other kids too, but they were all daughters, and she never cared for them once she had her precious son. She put all her eggs in one basket and in the way she treated her other kids, she made him the only option to take care of her when she was old. All her daughters are no contact with her because she didn’t care for them or devote as much time and attention to them as she did her son. And she forced her son into one of the few professions where he was unable to take care of her, all because she couldn’t stand the thought of a woman other than her having more of his attention. So now, because of her own stupid choices, she has no one to take care for her in her old age, which was one of the most important things to her.
I also find it funny how she ignored her daughters and expected her son to be the only one to take care of her, when statistically, daughters take care of their mother more than sons do.

I fell in love with my husband for many reasons, but one of the biggest ones is how he treated his mother. He would go and help her clean, take care of his grandpa to give her a break. My MIL loves her son so much that she wanted him happy. In our marriage our parents are priority I've never asked who he loves more because he's always shown me unconditional love. My mom has Alzheimers and is much older than his mom, he understands that my mom requires more attention and he's never complained about how much time I spend with her.

I think it’s great that you have a smooth relationship with your parents. That’s ideal, of course. I was really fortunate that we had a similar relationship with my and my spouses parents. When Charlotte is taking about putting your spouse over your mother, it’s when there is conflict. If Mother interferes, says ‘You have to paint the house beige, not grey like you and your wife chose.’ Or worse yet ‘you have to baptize your children, even though your husband doesn’t want you to’, the house had better be grey and that baby better not get baptized. Of course parents may need more attention at times, when they are unwell, or need something. But if someone consistently puts the wishes/needs of their parent over the wishes/needs of their spouse, they might end up spouseless!

As a single aro-ace, I really don't get the "Who's more important, who do you prioritize, spouse or parent or friend?" thing. I would think it should be triage. Parent in hospital trumps spouse wanting to eat out, friend going through nasty breakup trumps spouse wanting to play video games. Spouse being depressed trumps out drinking with friends. Anniversary with spouse trumps taking parent to store. Why would you compare the importance of different relationships? They're all important in making someone who they are, the person you fell in love with.

    • @magdolyn
      @magdolyn ปีที่แล้ว +343

It's more that your mom's opinion shouldn't dictate your relationship. Oftentimes, when people put their mother before their partner, it means that they will drop everything and do whatever mom wants, even if that's completely contradictory to what their partner needs. ie, partner is in the hospital, but mom needs a ride to the mall to go shopping; partner has a really big, important event at work that they'd really like for them to be at, but mom wants them to plant her azaleas instead; or they and partner are atheists and against infant baptism, but mom wants the babies baptized, so it's done against partner's wishes, and oftentimes behind partner's back.
"Always putting mom first" is often a red flag for these types of scenarios.

Can get into some pretty sticky situations, and feel lost on what to do. I mean you're supposed to take your spouse's side (or sig other, if you're not married yet, but it's a serious relationship) if it's a conflict between parents and spouse. HOwever, if your partner is clearly in the wrong then yeah...take parent's side...be prepared for an ass kicking tho lol

You’re making comparisons based on extremes, like as if it’s always going to be dire decisions that affect a person’s relationship. Sometimes it could just be your partner doesn’t want to go to an event because of whatever reason, but you’re annoyed because your family is there and it makes you look bad or something along those lines. Like, it doesn’t have to be a necessarily “important” event for it to cause problems or strain a relationship.

In my first marriage, I called his mother for everything too! She came and stayed with us after my son was born and was very sick and spent a week in NICU. She took me to the hospital every day so I could bring my pumped breast milk for him. She hugged me, held my hand, and kept me thinking positively through the whole ordeal. Her son couldn't be bothered.
When I left him with our 6 month old baby, she testified to the court about the DV she witnessed from him while she stayed with us so that the court granted me a protective order. He snarled at her, "You are DEAD to me!" in court, and she's never seen or spoken to him since.
My son turned 31 a couple of weeks ago, and his grandmother, my ex-MIL is the only one who called him. We both had a nice long chat with her, and I consider her to be one of the best people I've ever known.

It is the deployed woman's loss. This lady seems so sweet, mature, and she's absolutely gorgeous. I think she would have been up for co-parenting if her partner had just been honest from the get-go. I hope this beautiful lady meets her soulmate and has a long happy marriage.
I have a niece in Texas who has a Master's degree in theatre, owned a specialty t-shirt company with her own wonderful designs (she's a talented professional artist, actress, and musician, much like a blonde version of our Charlotte!). She has a darling personality and looks like a younger version of Kelly Ripa.
Her mom accepted with love and pride that her wonderful daughter is gay long ago when she was a teen, but her dad (my brother) didn't (he's a christian nationalist, ugh). They are divorced now, but I still love my SIL. My brother hasn't spoken to me since 2015 because I begged him to reconsider his support of trump. I reminded him of how much our mother hated trump and why. Our mom died in 2000, so she despised him long before he went into politics. She had no use for racists, rapists, and misogynists who abuse women.
My niece married her longtime "girlfriend" as soon as it was legal in Texas. I put girlfriend in quotes, because her spouse looks like a more masculine version of Justin Bieber. Soon after they wed, her spouse started hormone treatments, had surgery, and let us know that he's transitioning to the man he's always been!
They moved to a new community in a rural Texas town for a fresh start after he got harassed and threatened at work. They are very happy and have some acres with horses, living the dream.
It's hilarious, and heartwarming that the white christian girls in their current redneck community are always hitting on my niece's husband now and they only see him as a very handsome young man with a beard. Only their closest friends know that "August" used to be "April"!🏳‍🌈💕

For the 'Barber' guy, anyone who comes before the person you're gonna spend your whole life with clearly indicates your priority. Example of the last conversation with my ex-husband, trying to save our marriage. I tell him to express what 'really' bothers him, as he always holds back. He started talking about his mother. 'His mother' (again), when I clearly stated let's talk about us, and where the relationship was going. He didn't say anything nice about his mother. Funny because she gave him everything. So that time it hit me hard, he would never be happy no matter what I did, (and it wasn't my job) his mother would always come first, and (still does), yet he considered her a b**ch because she had slept with different men and enjoyed her life after she divorced (during her marriage she had been verbally and violently abused). Taking out all the layers of questions this led to, the 'End One' for me: What the hell does he think of any woman if he can't respect the one who bent over backward to give him all?
    So yeah, divorce.

It was a mounted skull of some kind of African animal with huge spiral horns.
I still have it, 30 years later. I learned to appreciate its beauty even if others didn't! It reminds me of something from the Addams Family house. I regret nothing!

I later realized that he just abused me, I had to laugh along because if I was not doing this I was the unfunny b. that could not take a joke. Funny enough he could not take one simple "joke" from me, he was butthurt and told everyone how horrible I was for making jokes. These relationships are NOT good relationships, just because one person has to laugh along. Mostly mens "jokes" are simply mean by literally being dangerous or simple passive agression about "women have to do the housework because I am too lazy and the word promised me a literal slave for my housework"

Same here. At some point he noticed I had a panic-attack and instead of helping, he grabbed me by the neck, jumped on my back while slapping his phone in my face (on flashlight) and screamed; 'They're coming, they're coming! WHHAAAARGH" and shook me back and forth as he slapped me and screamed. I was stuck in a blanket and couldn't get out and I just cried, to which he replied that it was just a prank and I was overreacting.
His friends had the same kind of humor and would lock me out of the house for 20 minutes in the icecold rain (in my tiny dress, in an unsafe city) and turn the music louder as not to hear me scream or bang on the door.
They would lock me in a stranger's (to me) hallway (that was also locked from the outside) and turn the lights off completely, which took 2,5 hours and by the time they opened the door, I was already rocking back and forth in the corner in the pitchblack. They'd ram me headfirst against the coatrack 'for fun' and drag me through the room by my arms like a detainee, without saying what their plan was with me. (Having been assaulted in my life before, this was very scary, since the other men in the room were observing and laughing but did not help.)
It took me a while to trust people again and I still do not let anyone close enough to be considered a friend but I have met acquintances and none of them (to my surprise) have hurt me physically so far, so that has shown me that is it not normal to actively harm someone, even when drunk.

That's so sad for the gorgeous woman who wasted that time with that girl and the brief engagement. She is gorgeous and I love her smile, completely and totally that other woman's biggest loss. Love you Charlotte you keep me smiling 💯

14:42 I think that after marriage or starting a family or something like that... the parents should become 2nd.

This guy I was dating ... did the same thing to me. It was still pretty new but he flew me down for an amazing vacation. After it was over, he dropped me at the airport. Then I get an email from him saying it wasnt going to work and we should just be friends. Ummmm whattttt. He had just said he loved me a few hours back. Cried all the way back home. Fun flight that was.

I literally have the same feeling like the look on Charlotte's face at the 1st 10s clip. It was unexpected and she obviously didn't see it coming, both Charlotte and the wife 😂😁
