That late 80s-early 90s anime style. Makes me wish there was an anime OAV attached to this property. I would have definitely picked this game up if it were released in North America back then.

OH MY GOD. This soundtrack has to be one of, if not the most underrated OST on the MD/GEN. I grit my teeth at that opening theme every time.
The way it starts out sounding like machine gun fire and then into the most incredible and chaotic pop-synths melody is just masterful.

Yeah. I was in a retro game shop and heard it and was like wtf.
I recently got it on ps5 and I cant believe this is a genesis game, it looks so out of this world, it was released with Gynoug and I am also surprised how good that game is.
I've been mentioning this on this comments page for months, it's outstanding! The soundtrack is one of the very best.

I just want to say I really appreciate the extra time you let the music tracks play. Most of the time with other creators its like 3 seconds of play. You leave it on long enough to get a better idea of how the track actually sounds. Thanks and you will catch me next time.

Unlikely as no one's discovered a way to make non-official CDs to run on unmodded Saturns without modchips or some kind of hack.

I picked this up on Switch recently and had a blast playing through it. Amazing OST as others have mentioned!

Gley Lancer has been reissued by Columbus Circle in Japan again in October 2022 - this time as a 30th Anniversary Edition which features a new cover art and includes a soundtrack CD containing 3 arranged tracks.
Yup. Still cost around $100 though.
@@SegaLordX the price is 8,800 yen on Japanese Amazon and about 7,600 yen at some other stores. Which is 63 USD and 54 USD respectively - pretty close to Retro-Bit release.
I was a bit disappointed this Retro-Bit release isn't getting the 3-track arranged OST. Might have to quadruple dip on this one (got the Wii VC release and the last reissued release)!
I have both reissues and was going to say, because the original reissue is well over $100. Over $200 if new.

I did managed to bought Gley Lancer on the Nintendo Switch through the Nintendo Switch eShop a while ago.
I'm a lucky owner of the japanese copy since the 90's. This game is very special to me and feels good that more people will be able to enjoy it now.
One of the first Shmups to get me hooked on the genre. Such a solid game.
THESE are the games I miss. Not made up by a committee with woke points. Or some lame narrative. A lot of these classic games were made up of small teams and were based on some Doujin artists idea and they told the music person to go nuts. It was a Wild West era that led to occasionally led to crap but mostly led to young, hungry artists who wanted to share their imagination with you. I’ve played shooters just for the music and artwork a lot of times. I miss those days. Support your local indie guys trying to bring this back
There was another 2022 reissue justt a month ago. Managed to snag my version then. Im happy to have it wo all the extra fluff, although a translation would have been nice, but not essential
Interesting release. I have the JP re-release from a few years ago, and the digital version on Xbox, so I won't be pursuing this. It's nice that it's getting another release, cool game.

I got this on Switch for like 7 bucks. It’s hard as hell but great.
Never heard of this one, was always trash at shooters, but that "Purple Sea" track is fire.

Great shooter! Not too hard which is nice. I can't get anywhere when playing the likes of Hellfire and Truxton. This I can actually beat although the 1cc continues to elude me.

its not astroid belt its saturn ring. of course that time we dont know yet how saturn ring inside is really. game suprisingly reflect this. you basicly in the ring. depth to back suprisingly feel like.

After several years of collecting Genesis games around Ontario, I decided not to spend a dollar more on the hobby. I got more games than I can play long enough to beat. Any others that strike my interest, I can just download the ROM. I certainly don't need another box to sit on a shelf!

Wow... just after they re-released the NES OG, they announced the SNES port of Battletoads 2 (AKA: Battletoads & Double Dragon) I don't really need the cart as I still have the OG one (SNES), Gleylancer if they have it once it's released, maybe I'll get it, I dunno to be honest, since I already have it on all recent platforms (Ps4/5, Xbox One/Series and Switch and the price was a joke... and really worth it, especially after having played the fan translation).

Not one of the A-list Genesis shooters in my view, but it's a solid B-tier shooter. The parallax-scrolling visuals are the best thing about it. The soundtrack is pleasant, but not amazing. Sound effects, weapons and gameplay lack the punch of the best shooters like Thunder Force. Gley Lancer's lack of originality is also a problem.
Agreed. Impressive in a lot of places, but it doesn't rise to the level of Genesis/MD all-time greats

before i sold my collection i actually owned an original Gley Lancer that i took home from japan , seeing the prices now i should have just kept it , but this game's soundtrack was just freakin amazing , i wasn't that in to shooters but actually bought it more for the soundtrack 🤣 Really wish retro bit would start doing game gear for example

Kinda. Playing any Sega game on a non-sega console feels dirty or at least a little off. But that's the world we live in now so you get used to it.
Pretty cool! By the way, I think the "asteroid belt" at 2:54 is actually the rings of Saturn, just close-up! Also, I really think that you should check out and review ANDRO DUNOS 2, which came out just this year! I bought it (on Steam), and it's a lot of fun!

If you just want to play the game and not you know physically own it you can just get it digitally for way way cheaper. A physical copy will always cost considerably more especially nowadays.

I gotta get my genesis from my old home, but I do have this one digitally on nintendo switch! I remember seeing a preview in EGM years ago, it looked like a fun shmup. I've enjoyed that version so far even if its super tough! but assuming I ever get my old consoles I'd definitely be on the lookout for this and the other retro-bit reissues.

It’s funny that even with a reissue they still titled it as “Gleylancer” when the katakana グレイランサ makes the sound “gu re i ra n sa” which ought to sound like “Greylancer” in English.

I pre ordered this version day one. Gleylancer is right up there with Musha and Truxton.
I always remember this game for being reviewed in Mean Machines. They did not rate it very well at all (essentially a 4/10 I think) and yet it goes on to be this HIGHLY sought after title.
Funny as well just as you mentioned, I recall for a long time thinking it was a mega cd title due to it's presentation. I also couldn't find the game for years on the net as I searched "gReylancer" lol.
1992 was a very competitive year for shooters, with Thunder Force 4, Contra 3, Last Resort, Axelay, Space Megaforce and Cybernator. Gleylancer isn't even close to the quality of those games. 4/10 was too low though, it should've been a 6 or 7.
4/10 is a joke score. While it doesn't top the likes of Thunder Force IV or Gaiares, Gley Lancer sure as hell isn't a bad game by any stretch of the imagination. Mean Machines was notorious for low rating a number of classic shoot'em ups. I still recall their travesty of a score for Whip Rush and Arrow Flash. Neither top tier, but they made them sound like some of the worst games on the Mega Drive.

Back in the day I always wrote off Gley Lancer as yet another hacked out shooter that never made it to the west. Played it for the first time about a year ago and holy balls is that opening level good. Plus the firing customisation?

The game actually looks really good
I absolutely adore this game, and would love a physical copy some day. But it's worth noting that Ratalaika released absolutely stellar digital versions of this and Gynoug/Wings of Wor for Switch last fall with an English translation, a mode that lets you control the movers directly with the second stick, multiple save state slots, rewind feature and an option-laden CRT filter mode that's one of the most impressive I've ever seen. So a straightforward physical release is going to have a tough time providing a better overall playing experience for non-purists. Lovely shelf piece either way though.
Yeah I was going to mention this too. The Switch version is fantastic and was my first intro to the game and I love it.
It's definitely for purest and people who want physical copies of old games especially hard to find/crazy expensive and or non-released/translated ones.

Retro-bit has been doing a great job reissuing those games that were limited to specific regions back then or that are ridiculously expensive today. Since they've already brought back many Genesis' shooters I really hope Musha is on its way too.
Let's face it, this is a waste of money. Sure, it's nice. But today there are multiple ways to play the ROM. You know you're not actually going to play this to completion anyway. Your money is better saved or spent on food and shelter.
Looks like a below average shooter compared to the great Turbografx 16 shooters of that era.
I can't imagine anyone that's played Gley Lancer thinking its below average.

You have a very strange definition of "average". Just because it doesn't stack up to the top 5% of 16-bit shooters, doesn't make it "bellow average". It makes it "bellow truly great". Anyway, it's hard to compare horizontal and vertical shmups. IMO, they are different genres. As I said before, this game is not on the level of the 16-bit hori top hitters like Thunder Force 4, Eliminate Down, Gaiares or Gates of Thunder, but it's way above the average throw-away shmup of the era.
Too bad they didn't use an English translation for the cut scenes. Because of this I'll just stick to playing the English patch version with an everdrive. Fantastic game though either way.
Retro-bit has fully translated the reissue into English.

The Retro-bit version doesn't ship until next year. Folks are just showing you the original Japanese edition for now.

I'm down worth everything but the price of these reissues. I bought a reproduction of this game for like $20 years ago.
I can't deal with RB since they have such ties with LRG now, and advise anyone who feels the need to, to make sure they order their product from legit sites and not limited run. They boned me on Gaiares reissue. They lost my business getting in bed with LRG. I'll pay the little extra and stick with 8bitdo controllers moving forward, they are better quality anyways. RB can go back into the hole with atgames, it climbed out of .

Doesn't really make sense to blame Retro-Bit if LRG lost your order. You can always order your games from Castlemania Games then.

Amazing shmup, I beat this and it's not as hard as most shmups out there, and the music is just amazing!
