Yeah! ED is great. I second that and would also love to these other, lesser known, Sega MD classic STGs/RnGs be re-released and/or get digital versions with quality-of-life improvements: "Battle Mania Daiginjou"; "Twinkle Tale" (so sad this absolute masterpiece stayed in Japan... [sigh]); "Slap Fight MD" (for the special mode with that great ost from mr. Y. Koshiro); "Undead Line" and "Elemental Master"
When it comes to cinematics this was the radiant silvergun equivalent on the mega drive, not many shmup builds up on such an intricate plotline that's like watching an '80s anime. The mover's various operating mode likely inspired Garegga's own since it predates it by 4 years. The rewind button is a nice gimmick, but ultimately won't help you to learn the game in the long term if you relied on it too much, points for innovations though
Save states are a better tool, honestly. Still, rewind was a very handy tool for getting timely footage! Only three or four real trucky bits on Normal.
I have played the heck out of this on emulator because I am a dirty emu lover and never felt the need -- on Normal level -- to use anything more than a save state. Game is not terribly hard on Normal anyway.
Great review. This is possibly my favourite MD shmup. The OST and playability are both great. Plus it’s not too hard (I should like Thunderforce IV more but don’t for this reason). This rights a long time wrong - a UK magazine called Mean Machines gave this 48% in the early 90s; that’s an unforgivable traversty in anyone’s book! Shame as I liked the magazine.
That U.K. review makes me wonder if they actually used SCART cables and Stereo Speakers on a Sega MegaDrive Model 1 with the YM2612... The sound on Genesis 2 and MegaDrive 2 and models where the YM2612 was removed really suffers big time and while there are complaints about collisions and bullets blending with other objects, it feels like these reviewers haven't adapted to the speed of the game and even the difficulty because the game is very different in Normal and very very different in Hard mode where energy A.I. does last shooting or revenge shots while they die or some enemies anyway. Playing on a CRT Trinitron greatly amplifies the experience of this game and MegaDrive in general hence I love this game way more than ThunderForce IV and III but technically those are different games and most people have nostalgia as a factor because this game was deliberately NOT translated and localized by the people responsible for such a job with Sega of America's staff who started doing this practice of rejecting and skipping many, MANY Japanese made MegaDrive games in favor hyping their rubbish SoA made games.

Such a fun game. Played it a lot. The genesis had some great shmups. Good to see these games hit u.s consoles. Japan seriously has some bad ass shmups. Darius for the mega drive is a good example. I am glad to see an exact port to other consoles of this game.
When a game opens up with a fantastic first-level tune, I am likely to be hooked. Truxton/Tatsujin 2 is a perfect example, for me! "Live in Future" is pretty high up as a game-opening track for me.
Hands down one of the best surprise ports of the year, and the QOL just completely wowed me to the point I happily bought it on Series X to play alongside my Switch review copy: would love to see more masaya games brought back this way!

I still have the Mega Drive Version.And I think, it also had the slight input delay you mentioned. I can‘t validate, though, since I don‘t have a CRT right now. In some way I‘m happy you enjoy this game. It absolutely was and is one of my favourite Shmpus on the Mega Drive. And I clearly remember seeing Stage 1 the first time in an import store in Munich: Someone tested Thunder Spirits on SNES and it only took 30seconds or so before that game turned into a slide show. I then asked to check out Gley Lancer and oh boy, the speed of the asteroid belt and that great tune just blew me (and the Thunder Spirits guy) away. And it was my first 1CC game. Now I‘m seeing me buying it three times again, on Xbox, Switch and PlayStation.

Yeah, and it doesn't stop with the opening level. There are some really well-done environments and visuals later on, too. Masaya put a ton of effort and love into this, and it shows in every corner of the game.

I'm going to say it's going to be there just because of the emulation, but again, it's so slight that it may not actually be a thing; I might just be imagining it.
I dig the game. Its a bit easy on the standard difficulty - dare I say boring. Crank it up and it's a hoot. It's a bit too long for a full run, so after that first W, I pop it on for a few stages fairly frequently. It's just very satisfying in short bursts. I love the vintage and modern modes too. They feel very different. I also agree that Gleylancer does exactly why Guardian Force should have done. I kind of enjoy guardian force, but man do those controls stink.
Scoring in this game is broken. You can re-run at least one section endlessly to get any score you want and there is no bonus at the end of the game for the ship stock you are holding. At a certain point as you get better at the game you are using less lives, re-running less areas, and your score decreases.
Bought on PS4 at weekend, easiest, quickest and cheapest platinum trophy I've ever got . Decent game, but certainly not worth the crazy prices original copies go for.
Not a single game out there is. There are some though, that I haven't regretted, like Recca. I hope Terra Cresta II is the next not to disappoint (especially after Hyper Duel and Guardian Force let me down so hard. Sad Face.)

Its funny how you act like emulation simply doesn't exist. I could theoretically just reach over to my cheap Chinese handheld, go to the g folder of my genesis roms and boom I'm playing this "hard to find game." If it wasn't for roms how many games would already be lost? Just saying there doesn't have to be any monetary barrier to playing this game. Especially since the people who made and own the games IP aren't going to make a penny off you paying some rando that happened to find the game in his attic. Unless the game is available in some sort of legit download, and that's probably only 0.001 percent of all video games ever made.

Played this back in the 90s as my friend had a -cough- wildcard. One of my fave shooters, fantastic music.

The fact that this game is being released for Xbox makes this a MUST buy input lag or other issues be damned. (Not saying this has those issues)

Or straight-up twinstick control. Guardian Force definitely needed it.
