Amber calling out karma on dead scientists for not wanting to see Gordon's baby photos is probably the most Freeman's mind game play I've ever seen. I think she would enjoy the Freeman's Mind series.
30:11 The names on the lockers belong to the Half-Life design team. Inside Freeman's locker are two novels, "The 37th Mandala" and "The Orchid Eater," written by Marc Laidlaw, the game's writer. The baby in the photograph is Isabel, the daughter of level designer Harry Teasley, born during the game's development.
Practically spat my tea out when Amber said 'my controller'. Man alive is that a second-best choice for this game. Some of the later levels are going to be a nightmare....
Ahah I kind of had the same reaction when she said that out loud 😅 I understand that the keyboard + mouse combo can be counter-intuitive for most people who are mostly used to controllers, but just as the other way around, some games can be a pain to play with a controller! Especially older PC games.
50:36 Talk about selective perception. That health dispenser station were looking for is in shot right there, and while you are asking for it. On the wall to your right, two steps forward. 🤣

Definitely not a game I expected you to play but not complaining. Been like 20 years since I last played this myself so gonna be a fun nostalgia trip watching these :)
I love that you've started doing these old school classics because I never played a lot of them either, and was always curious. It's nice to just watch and finally see what all the fuss was about.
0:59 "Why am I so fast?!?" Welcome to the FPS games of the 1990s :) Back in the day running was default in most FPS and walk/sneak was often used with Shift.
The first time I started the game, back in 1998, I didn't even try to look around while riding the automated train, because I just assumed it was all prerendered, that's how good it looked. I just sat there and watched the 'video'. When it stopped at the end and Barney walks up to you ("Looks like you're running late!") I found out it was not prerendered, so I restarted it and did it again.😆I think it's super cool that you're playing this legendary old game.
this is so nostalgic, i can't tell you how many times i've done rode that tram and done that opening section haha this flew by, it was so chaotic and fun! half life is always chaos but this playthrough looks like it's gonna be extra chaotic lmao, i can't wait for more! very excited you chose to play this!
I was NOT expecting a Half-Life playthrough, but I'm super excited to see it! I don't want to give you too many suggestions, but you will want to use your quick-save since you can run yourself out of health and ammo and (kind of) screw yourself if you are being too casual. Also, the game was designed for keyboard and mouse without auto-aim, but I wouldn't worry about that. Play whatever way makes it more enjoyable for you. Welcome to the Half-Life universe!
Let's go! This game old, still holds up pretty well, but it's important to remember that every FPS before this was just going through a maze to collect colored keys, real DOOM clones, and all story happened in a splash screen. Revolutionized FPS and games in general with all the in-engine events and story. I'm here for it, have fun, be careful with ladders.
This came up on my recommended and I am glad because I love watching people experience Half-Life for the first time! Your commentary is quick-witted and funny without being annoying, so I appreciate it and can't wait to see the rest of the Half-Life series! If you're curious of the official franchise order, it's: *Half-Life -> Half-Life: Opposing Force -> Half-Life: Blue Shift -> Half-Life 2 -> Half-Life 2: Episode 1 -> Half-Life 2: Episode 2* and that's it. Half-Life: Alyx is a prequel to HL2 and requires a VR headset so once you play Episode 2, you're all caught up basically. :) The Portal Series started as a side-thing, it's basically a First-Person Puzzle game, but the sequel was kind of "baked-in" to the Half-Life universe, so, you could technically put them after Episode 2.
If you haven't already, it's worth looking at Black Mesa, a full remake of the original Half Life. It is notable for overhauling the graphics, updating the enemy AI, redesigning some levels, and having an absolute banger of a soundtrack. Most importantly, however, the team spent years completely reworking the last few levels of the original Half Life (called "Xen"), which are widely regarded as the weakest part of the original game. These levels were rushed since Valve was running out of money at the time (hard to believe these days, right?), but the Black Mesa reimagining of them is incredible.
still crazy to me that some random Korean intern saved Valve, and by extension pretty much the whole video game industry. The right man in the right place.
ooh YAY half-life !! I hope you get a chance to play Half-Life 2 (even in your own time) it's great, and was free on steam (now including the episodes) for the 20th Anniversary
I would quite strongly recommend using mouse and keyboard for PC first person shooter games like half life. While you "can" use a controller, the game is very not designed for them. Might take some adjustment, but once you have it's a far superior experience on keyboard + mouse.
I'm so glad you decided to play the training course, it really helps get you used to the controls before jumping in. Also a wholesome detail, that guard receiving CPR actually survives!
I really love to watch your playthroughs because you are so thorough with the game world. Like you really take your time to appreciate every corner of the map, which I think is awesome because often people just miss all those nice little details that the designers put in!
So glad you’re enjoying it, very fun to watch! 😁 I think the long jump works the same as in Super Mario 64, so you run, do a short crouch, (release crouch? 🤔) and jump, in quick succession.
Oh my, what a treat for the end of the year. I love it. I’m so excited for HL!! It’s hilarious when you run around and click on EVERYTHING - that’s what I do as well! New hair looks great on you, and those glasses suit you too.
This was one of the first games I played with 3D acceleration on our 3DFX Voodoo Banshee 16MB (you read that right, MB as in MegaByte, orders of magnitude less VRAM than modern graphics cards) graphics card back in the day. A story-based FPS like this was revolutionary back in 1998. This game and "Unreal" took up a lot of PC gamer mindspace at the time (and initiated quite a few upgrades)
I got really excited when I saw you were playing half life! I grew up playing half life 2 with my family so I'm glad I get to see you experience the games for the first time. It's quite the nostalgia. Hope you have fun with it!
I've been playing this game since I was a kid, before I even could speak english and understand the story. It was so much fun watching YOU have fun with the world. Youre gonna love the second one
YAY! YAY YAY YAY! I asked you about this on Twitch once! Incredibly awesome to see it happen! These games hold a special place in my heart, hope you enjoy them! Hope you're doing well Amber! Biggest of hugs. Cheers! x
Yeees! Excited for this! And I love that you're playing the OG and not the fan remake "Black Mesa". If you're playing with the controller, you might want to keep the auto aim. Unless you want the extra challenge. It's up to you. There is a quick save and quick load button if you want to try stuff out it comes in handy. I think it was F6 to save and F7 to load. You can check the button mapping if you want to use it. Your new hair looks great, by the way! Have a great start into the new week, Amber!
Oh wow--not only one of my favourite let's players playing one of my favourite nostalgic games, but a start to said let's player discovering classics that she's missed! I'm excited to see where this goes--both the current episode, and the journey as a whole! ^_^
Whenever I go back to these old games I'm always amazed by how much fun they still are. If I start a Half-Life playthrough I'm for sure going to finish it and I'm going to play nothing else until I do. There isn't much new stuff that I can say that about except maybe a couple fromsoftware games.
One of the first games I played as a kid, didn’t realise how truly remarkable it was until replaying it years later… played Black Mesa recently and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it held up
OMG! What a treat. I've spent untold hours playing HL1. I learned to speedrun it, even recorded a lets-play series focusing on the lore and storyline. To see it through the eyes of a newcomer to the world, especially one whose content I enjoy so much ... wow!
This game is indeed a classic and still amazing to this day! Especially in level-design and logic puzzles between the action. Lot of stuff is interactable and it's one big game about try&error and about learn by doing (example: "hey wait, I could've saved that guy and oh he might've opened the door for me!"). And this game is full of those situations and environments where you're like "Hm, I wonder if I can do that..." and most of the time the game let's you and it always feels so cool bc you know YOU just came up with that idea and it worked - without the game holding your hand always. You're basically rewarded for your clever thinking, sometimes also for taking risks - or at least you learn from them. ;) Gotta say so far you did really well for your first time playing it, definitely looking forward to the next part. This game has SO much more in store for you later on, trust me. :D A classic game worth playing! 💯
And if she were to accidentally (not intentionally at all...) attack a scientist they will flee from you (it's not supposed to be funny but their dialogue when they flee in fear is hilarious 🤣). Also security guards will turn on you and actually kill you if you accidentally attack them!
The Half Life series is one of the most influential series of all time, try to place yourself in the time this game came out and this playthrough will be very special
Yay Half-Life! I was just watching your The Last of Us playthrough and this popped up! You're on a streak of great games, I hope you're enjoying yourself with all of them. 😊 Also, your hair looks gorgeous! Black hair suits you well. All hail Freeman!
Oh what a surprise!! If you enjoy this, I really hope you continue on to the sequel and the episodes! It is truly and incredible series. Also i love the hair!!
Great to see how much joy can be had by pressing all the buttons and blowing up a microwave 😂 Very cute glasses ma'am 🙂 was hoping you'd put them on and be like "oh I'm not blind, it's just scribbles" 😂 Also, respect for tolerating drift rather than using a keyboard haha
I am really enjoying your playthrough so far, as always because of your playing style and personality :) I have also never seen a playthrough of this game before either! I also couldn't help but laugh because half of the video, no matter how stressed you got, there was a constant (and hilarious!) "Do you want to see a picture of my kid?!, Do you want to see a picture of my kid?!, "Do you want to see a picture of my kid?!" haha I also love the new hairstyle and color, and I think the glasses pair with it very nicely (though I am a 36 year old man, so what do I know? haha). So glad to see you back, and hope you enjoy this game and playthrough! :) I am also re-watching your Hollow Knight playthrough for like the 10th time :P I also know you love Jurassic Park and dinosaurs (as much as I do!), and there are a few really good Dinosaur horror games I have recently seen here and there, and was wondering if you had any thoughts on trying them in the future for the channel /yourself? :) I also wondered if you ever played Jurassic Park: The Game? It shows additional characters in the backdrop during the events of the first film as they make their way across the island (very story and character driven too!). This is my first comment, so I am sincerely sorry for writing so much!
Thanks, I enjoyed the intro! This one had been on my list forever, since the initial release date, but I never got around to it. However, I just purchased it and I hope there is a motion blurr setting because, you're right, the movement speed is insane.
So much nostalgia! I bought my first graphics card to play this game, on my first own PC after moving out of home for the first time. No-one to tell me not to so played this from when I got home from work to 2, 3am every night. So glad to see you enjoying this, bit different to the souls games but like them has a special place in my heart. Have fun!
This game series will be a treat for you, man. I'm humbled seeing new gamers play one of the very games I grew up with, more than 20 years ago. Nostalgia. :)
You're hair looks good, is that ur natural color or did ya just get it darkened. Also you should play Cyberpunk 2077 I just started playing it recently I waited years for them to fix everything and all I can say is Wow it's amazing it's been a while since I've been completly immersed in a game
Awesome to see you playing Half-Life 😊 If you want to try a more modern version of the first game then I strongly recommend Black Mesa. The graphics and over all ambience really sucks you in.
Cool to see the OG Half-Life, but Black Mesa (the remake) is still a big recommend, feels much more modern and doesn't diminish the original experience in any way. Still, both versions are fine :)
Uplink is the demo level that was released when the game came out. It's its own separate thing and not a part of the main game. It's a fun curiosity to look at after having finished the game, but it has various weapons and enemies that are spread out over the whole game, so I'd really leave it for later.
My biggest tip for this game, which will mainly come in handy later, is to think like a scientist, not an action hero. Despite the fast movement speed, this isn't a game like doom where you run and gun. You gotta use cover, plan encounters, and generally be careful. If you don't, you may find it unfairly hard at some parts.
"That thing hurt, even if it doesn't look like they're hitting me" that's because you're talking fire from the security guard's pistol, try to stand to the side or behind targets when you've got them following you.
This game really pushed my cutting edge pentium PC at the time. It was only when I replayed it again a few years ago that I experienced the speed skating feeling that you have. It takes some getting used to. It’s fun watching you play it with 2020s gaming sensibilities and thinking everything will be interactive and that stealth was a viable mechanic. This game is so bare bones now but innovated on so much compared to every other FPS which was just some variation on Quake. I’m going to enjoy this
49:13 I'd like to think that Gordon canonically stood in that hallway for many many hours, just absolutely pummeling that body with the crowbar until nothing but sludge and bits were left.
so funny to see you playing this game in 2024 for the first time! ive been playing it back in 1998 or early 1999 first timer, a cracked english version since it was quickly banned in germany after release. instead, the german version had green blood and marines were replaced by robots!
FPS games in the 90s used to be speedy and slippery like that (I grew up with it, and I'm not used to it anymore lol). HL1 is from the time when games were starting to transition from being speedy, or having an "always run" option turned on by default, to being slower by default and having a sprint key. HL1 was still in the mindset that running is the default, and so it makes you quite speedy and gives you a key for walking slower.

This game really was designed with mouse and keyboard control in mind, which is probably why using the gamepad is somewhat awkward.
Yeah, with keyboard movement, the drifting on ladders (among other things) isn't an issue.
Should really use a keyboard and mouse, especially as you're gonna use Crouch a lot and it's gonna help.

Ah sweet! One of the best games of all time. I don't have time to watch this right now, but will be for sure! I hope you have an amazing time.
Oh this is going to be a fun one to watch, also love the hair Amber
Yay, glad you're back! Loving the dark hair!
One tip: the game does have friendly fire. If an ally is shooting at an enemy, try to avoid walking through their line of fire...
And if she were to accidentally (not intentionally at all...) attack a scientist they will flee from you (it's not supposed to be funny but their dialogue when they flee in fear is hilarious 🤣). Also security guards will turn on you and actually kill you if you accidentally attack them!
One of the funnest playthroughs I've seen yet, looking forward to more!
Amber, you are always such a fun, delightful person and I just wanted to say thank you for having such an amazing channel to subscribe to! You rule!
So glad you're playing this classic. It's so fun and chaotic I'm sure is perfect for you.
Damn, can't wait for the next parts of your playthrough now.... Liked and subscribed to see more of your reaction, which is purely delightful!
Also, your hair looks gorgeous! Black hair suits you well.
All hail Freeman!
Oh what a surprise!! If you enjoy this, I really hope you continue on to the sequel and the episodes! It is truly and incredible series. Also i love the hair!!
Oh man this is hype! Definitely play through the series! You’re in for a great ride!
The new hair looks great! SUPER excited to see you play half-life!!
Great to see how much joy can be had by pressing all the buttons and blowing up a microwave 😂
Very cute glasses ma'am 🙂 was hoping you'd put them on and be like "oh I'm not blind, it's just scribbles" 😂
Also, respect for tolerating drift rather than using a keyboard haha
Oh my Goodness. One of my favorite creators is playing one of my all time fave games. Amber, you look amazing too. Merry Christmas 🎉😊
Have fun!
Dark hair is fabulous, queen! Like if Snow White turned gamer.
This game series will be a treat for you, man. I'm humbled seeing new gamers play one of the very games I grew up with, more than 20 years ago. Nostalgia. :)
Couldn’t be happier to see you take this on. When it came out it really was a step forward.
I love vintage games on your channel!
You're hair looks good, is that ur natural color or did ya just get it darkened. Also you should play Cyberpunk 2077 I just started playing it recently I waited years for them to fix everything and all I can say is Wow it's amazing it's been a while since I've been completly immersed in a game
It's a fantastic game. I feel that Amber would enjoy it, there's a lot to explore and collect!
Ooooh neat!! Very excited to see you dive into this 😊
Awesome to see you playing Half-Life 😊
If you want to try a more modern version of the first game then I strongly recommend Black Mesa. The graphics and over all ambience really sucks you in.
1:04:48 "it was at this moment that he knew, he f*cked up"
Cool to see the OG Half-Life, but Black Mesa (the remake) is still a big recommend, feels much more modern and doesn't diminish the original experience in any way. Still, both versions are fine :)
I wouldn't say so
Uplink is the demo level that was released when the game came out. It's its own separate thing and not a part of the main game. It's a fun curiosity to look at after having finished the game, but it has various weapons and enemies that are spread out over the whole game, so I'd really leave it for later.
Remember playing this as a kid and i was so amazed. Great nostalgia and all the multiplayer and mods i played with friends. Great game.
All the scientists: Better get to the test chamber.
Godon: Would anyone...like to see a picture of my son...?
I am so glad to see this, and I hope you enjoy it and go on to play half-life 2 and both portal games!
Absolute must play games of all time, I’m so excited
"That thing hurt, even if it doesn't look like they're hitting me" that's because you're talking fire from the security guard's pistol, try to stand to the side or behind targets when you've got them following you.
I like this within 2 seconds of the page loading. I am soooo here for this playthrough.
I’m going to enjoy this
LOVE the new game, LOVE the new hair, a very welcome surprise on my dashboard this morning!
49:13 I'd like to think that Gordon canonically stood in that hallway for many many hours, just absolutely pummeling that body with the crowbar until nothing but sludge and bits were left.
Oooohhhh assuming you do this whole series, you're in for a wild ride!!
so funny to see you playing this game in 2024 for the first time! ive been playing it back in 1998 or early 1999 first timer, a cracked english version since it was quickly banned in germany after release. instead, the german version had green blood and marines were replaced by robots!
omg! you're playing one of my favorite game series! Hope you enjoy this!
