It's always a joy to see completely clueless first-timers play such magnificent classics for the first time, blind. 1998 was an INSANE year for games, with ground breaking titles like HL1, RE2, Zelda:OoT, Grim Fandango, Pokemon R&B, Thief... etc, dropping within few months! On that note, my #1 protip for any "young" player diving into the pre-2000s gaming: Read the game's manual first! If the game has a Tutorial mode (ie. HL's Hazard Course), do finish it too.
1:07:07 poor guy couldn't handle the stress!! as far as i'm aware, NPCs in half-life's engine can only carry out one task at a time, sequentially. i believe at some point he took enough damage to die, but was stuck pathfinding back and forth infinitely until you came and broke him out of that loop. the moment he stood still, he realized he should be dead and just fell over haha bro was literally too busy to die.. like same
I used to set off the turrets in the last room of the Hazard Course as the security guard was inputting the code. They'd be turning him into Swiss cheese, but he wouldn't die until he'd finished.
A few notes: - You can switch between weapons by pressing the number keys on your keyboard, or by scrolling through the list with your mouse. You can also press Q to quickly switch between the last two weapons you've used. - MP3 volume only controls the background music. _Everything_ else, including NPC dialogue, is controlled by the "sound effects" slider. Unfortunately, there is no way to change the dialogue volume separately. - Whenever you open the weapon menu, it stays open until you select a weapon-which could screw you up if you're not expecting it during a high-action segment. Later games make the menu disappear automatically after a few seconds. - Many enemies do indeed have weak spots; in the case of most humanoid NPCs, it's the head. - Crouch-jumping in Valve games works as if your character is pulling their legs up in midair. It can be helpful to get to slightly higher platforms that the normal jump isn't high enough to reach. - Those things that look like barnacles... are indeed barnacles! - At 50:00, you fell into the crusher at the bottom of the ravine. The water is perfectly safe to swim in!
"Many enemies do indeed have weak spots; in the case of most humanoid NPCs, it's the head." In real life, people who aren't snipers are usually taught to aim for the torso, because you're most likely to get a hit that way, which is the most important thing. It's probably different, though, in a game like this where getting hit is not the least bit debilitating. "Those things that look like barnacles... are indeed barnacles!" Well, they're _called_ "barnacles". Not the same as the Earth animals by that name, aside from their attaching themselves to certain surfaces.
@fllthdcrb That is actually a good point-torso shots are much easier to pull off than head shots, even in Half-Life. If you _can_ get a head shot, though, it usually does more damage. And... oh man, I knew I should have been more specific with the barnacles. I was going to say that, but I felt like my comment was getting way too long.
Its soo cool to see somebody reacting to HL like it just released, like not expecting horror in a fps, being thrown into this world, really shows how good this game is
Many people today can't understand how revolutionary and groundbreaking was back then, to have NPCs which actually interact with the environment. Previous shooter games either did not have any characters at all except for the enemies, or they were just standing/walking/running around, but not really interacting with the environment.
@@fllthdcrb I still shudder thinking back to the old vertex based animations and the odd undulation and pulsing the models did but it was still damn impressive back then
Indeed. Modern games' difficulty is a joke by comparison. Even "easy" in _HL1_ is hard by today's standards. And "hard" changes some things aside from just ammo, damage, and healing amounts. We'll get to see some of those later on. My favorite of those changes, though, is probably (spoiler for a bit later in the game) ubj gur Oynpx Bcf (juvpu ner nyernql punyyratvat gb svtug) ner tvira bcgvpny pnzbhsyntr, znxvat gurz uneqre gb frr.

Heh, "Brain Mites", never heard that kind of name for the Headcrabs before. A pro tip: the vending machines' drink cans, when dispensed, can actually give you health, but only one health point each. But keep going with the game, and good luck!
Not a spoiler just a fun fact. This game takes place in the same universe as Portal. They actually make references to Black Mesa in both Portal games. Black Mesa kept beating Aperture for DoD contracts and government funding which made Aperture’s CEO very bitter. Black Mesa also stole some Aperture tech so they were mad about that too.
Glad you are enjoying. As someone else said pretty much every weapon has a right click alternate fire that fits some other purpose, so play around with that. Also don't think you mentioned it/knew but Portal and Half-Life actually take place in the same universe which is pretty interesting to think about considering all the chaos of both games. Hope you like the rest of the playthrough : )
I love watching these video`s of people playing the first Half-Life and seeing their reactions because i think they were expecting the game to be rubbish but they were not.
Oh man, you're hitting all the beats, I'll be watching the full thing for sure, this is such a treat. Hard difficulty? Jeeeesus I hope you're an FPS veteran, Half-Life gets brutal in the later stages.
FYI Hard is kinda punishing. All it does it give you less health in wall stations and medpacks and make the enemies do more damage. No AI changes or anything else over medium. Edit: Oh! Specifically, the Vortigaunts* take 2 seconds to charge their electric attacks on easy and medium. 7:37 - "I don't know what anomalous means." - Anomalous, derived from "anomaly", meaning something strange or out of the ordinary. 33:51 - "Well we're not going down there." - There's a battery for your suit at the bottom of the elevator shaft. Half-Life really rewards you for exploring. 37:08 - "Does not let me out." - You were too far away/not lined up properly, to open the door. There's a cool little scripted scene if you do. 57:58 - "There's a health kit up there, but I don't know how I'm supposed to get up there." - You can only reach it by getting off the elevator as it passes the platform on the way down. 1:03:41 - "Now how do I get up there?" - You need a small crate to use as a step, to get on the larger crate.
not sure what happened around 40:00 - how that was supposed to happen is that the scientist gets pulled into the vent, then the giblets you saw spewing out would happen roughly a second later
In the training room there's a locked door which the announcement system tells you is off when you walk up to it but it actually gets progressively sassier and then annoyed as you attempt to open it. I like to think that's what inspired GlaDOS.
It was indeed planned as a horror game. Valve took Quake 1 engine and thought to make game based on Stephen King's The Mist - secret military laboratory, experiment gone wrong, and alien world pouring into ours.
I randomly got recommended this but I'll be watching all your Half-Life vids if you keep up this quality! I always like someone who actually takes their time in the opening to interact with things, the best details are often found in introductory sections. You're in for a treat with this series. I kid you not when I say the Half-Life series is my biggest fandom of all time. I love how close you are with some of the names, shows they were accurately named. "Brainmites" - so close, yet so far. "They look like barnacles" - well that's exactly what they are :) And the "dogs" were indeed meant to behave dog-like (hence the name "houndeye"). They are actually coded as pack animals and their attacks get stronger when they're in a group, which you can notice by the color of their attacks. They were originally intended to be able to fight alongside you, but when playtesters just kept killing them they scrapped the idea. Oh, and the cockroach AI is actually very advanced in this game (there's a video about their AI being better than the AI of pedestrians in Cyberpunk). They flee from light and are attracted to corpses, meat chunks and blood.
'90s: Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Duke Nukem 3D Going 3D: Metal Head, Descent, Quake - HL... A new millennium: Unreal, Counter-Strike, Call of Duty Battlefield 1942 Half-Life 2, CoD4: Modern Warfare, Bioshock, Crysis I've been gaming for nearly 27 years. At 8:40, he sees the G-Man and doesn't know it.
Glad you liked it! I remember buying and playing this when it first came out. It. Was. Incredible. So much ahead of its time. And still holds up very very well.
Out of all the times that I have played this game, I have never tried to turn off the lights in that room at the start while the dudes are looking at equations on the board, that was honestly pretty funny to witness. 😂
There are times I feel like the YT algorithm just kind of works and I think like this is one of them! 😆Interesting listening to your history with the game(Or lack of I suppose!).
Helps to treat the guards as mobile turrets for cover/backup fire instead of leaving them alone like 01:06:05. They can't move and attack at the same time like you can, so you're the lure and tank by default.
I love the combat encounters in this game, you kinda have to hide behind and stuff and cook grenades often if you don’t want to get obliterated it’s good shit.
I honestly forgot how "horror" this game was until I saw you playing it. For me, Half-Life is a natural extension of older games like Doom and Quake and Duke Nukem 3d where all the "horror" was mostly just fun and games and kids going "oh that's soooo coooool!" You didn't look at a scientist with a headcerab and think "how sad" it was "that's an enemy with x hitpoints."
tip: most weapons have an "alt-fire". Your shotgun magically turns into a double barrel by simply right-clicking it. Another tip: you can switch to previously selected weapon by pressing Q key. You can also bind keys to weapons using the console.
Oh btw here's the release order for all half life games and also the one singular portal comic: half life 1, half life opposing force (official expansion outsourced to gearbox, same with the next two), half life blue-shift, half life decay (an expansion which is only officially in the ps2 version and is co-op but can be played singleplayer by pressing select, there's also unofficial pc ports, also play xen attacks, get an a on all levels or use the cheat code for all levels unlocked), half life 2, half life 2 episode 1, half life 2 episode 2, portal, the portal ratman comic (forgot the name, you can read it online though), portal 2, the lab(vr game, not important to play, is free), bridge constructor portal (not a valve game but not a mod, plus it's fun) aperture hand lab (might be the wrong name idk, also not important to play, vr game, think is free), half life alyx (vr game but is a must play, there's a non vr mod), aperture desk job (controller required, not important to play, is free) also special mention to half life uplink, a non canon demo and secondly a web game choose your own aventure for half life 2 (only available through internet archive, may seem like there's only 3 options but you can type hidden options in the browser)
Two things that some else might've pointed out, but I feel obligated to do in case. A lot of weapons have alternate fires! For example, the shotgun's alternate fire is super strong, but uses double the amount as ammo, and the pistol has a rapid fire mode with less accuracy. Also, you can quickly swap to your last used weapon with 'Q', which might help you in a pinch!
there game that is currently in early access called Abiotic Factor is pretty much what would the rest of the science team have to do if Gordon Freeman didnt turn up for work that day, - its a survival game set in a covert lab during a series of scientific disasters and players need to team up and cobble together gear to find out what happened and escape all done in late 90's art style XD

Half-Life Uplink is an old E3 demo before the release. It's a short 30 minutes gameplay showcase of the enemies, enviroment, mechanics and engine technology.
6:10 Be careful because you can actually crouch jump out of the train, which would force a restart. But also it's typically not the new players who try and succeed in that. 😂
not sure if you actually completed the training, but at the end, I believe they'd explained that some if not most guns have a secondary fire (i.e pistols can go rapid fire at a cost of accuracy, shotguns can fire 2 shells at once, etc) Another tip, if a guard can no longer assist you (path is blocked and no way of backtracking) you can kill them for an extra pistol rounds XD

almost EVERY gun has alternate fire mode on right click
playing on hard from the get-go. you're brave.
welcome on board :)
For scientists to heal you, you need to hold E.
You play DRG? Rock and Stone brother ⛏.
11:53 you accidentally pressed the button behind his desk. I didn’t even know it was possible to do from the front 😂
the books by marc laidlaw in gordon's locker are real books written by the game's writer btw
not sure what happened around 40:00 - how that was supposed to happen is that the scientist gets pulled into the vent, then the giblets you saw spewing out would happen roughly a second later
Gordon doesn’t need to hear this, he’s a highly trained professional
So happy to see this
16:37 If you keep pressing it the food inside will eventually explode
You blow up dude’s microwave casarole
@diegovargasdiego 🤷♂️
I hope you actually complete this game and the 2 expansions as well
I'm sure you will have the time of your life, these games are amazing .
*3
"I think these things are sentient, they've got like clothes" referring to the Vautigaunt's slave collars lol.
In the training room there's a locked door which the announcement system tells you is off when you walk up to it but it actually gets progressively sassier and then annoyed as you attempt to open it. I like to think that's what inspired GlaDOS.
Playing on hard mode and running head-first into every headcrab is certainly a vibe.
It was indeed planned as a horror game. Valve took Quake 1 engine and thought to make game based on Stephen King's The Mist - secret military laboratory, experiment gone wrong, and alien world pouring into ours.
The whole opening sequence before and after the event is such amazing game design, show dont tell. You don’t get such game design nowadays
"I don''t know what anomalous means." Oh this is going to be a wild ride.
When the barnacle (that is actually their name) dropped you in the water, you fell into a grinder, the water itself is fine.
'90s: Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Duke Nukem 3D
Going 3D: Metal Head, Descent, Quake - HL...
A new millennium: Unreal, Counter-Strike, Call of Duty
Battlefield 1942
Half-Life 2, CoD4: Modern Warfare, Bioshock, Crysis
I've been gaming for nearly 27 years.
At 8:40, he sees the G-Man and doesn't know it.
Glad you liked it! I remember buying and playing this when it first came out. It. Was. Incredible. So much ahead of its time. And still holds up very very well.
Those mites are called head crabs and they devour the body and keep the host alive so they can find a new host. Basically those claws are well bone.
"a business man" 14:15
lol
A masterpiece in story building
Out of all the times that I have played this game, I have never tried to turn off the lights in that room at the start while the dudes are looking at equations on the board, that was honestly pretty funny to witness. 😂
"They look like barnacles a little bit." Bingo!👍
17:17 But... but... 😂😂
39:48 Never saw this animation glitching like that! Kind of a unique experience.
YES! My childhood favorite game.
your vibes are so overwhelmingly old youtube, i love it
Make sure to turn OFF the "auto-aim", and to enable "raw mouse input", "lower input latency", and "mouse filter".
Congratulations on finally becoming a highly trained professional.
if you are talking about Fahrenheit in the intro, i thought it was Celsius. So I would die in the BMRF If it was Celsius 😵💫
Lmaooo I was gonna say you look older than me! 7:25
If you right click with the shotgun, you can fire with both barrels
Awesome cant wait for part 2, this game is great!
Two things that some else might've pointed out, but I feel obligated to do in case. A lot of weapons have alternate fires! For example, the shotgun's alternate fire is super strong, but uses double the amount as ammo, and the pistol has a rapid fire mode with less accuracy. Also, you can quickly swap to your last used weapon with 'Q', which might help you in a pinch!
there game that is currently in early access called Abiotic Factor is pretty much what would the rest of the science team have to do if Gordon Freeman didnt turn up for work that day, - its a survival game set in a covert lab during a series of scientific disasters and players need to team up and cobble together gear to find out what happened and escape all done in late 90's art style XD
a legendary game, probably the father of fps in the 2000's and early 2010's
i never realised the names in the credits were that funny
4:15 what's uplink? nothing much, just gotta go save Zelda x)
1:11:00 quickest foreshadowing ever x)
Im so glad to see old school lets play videos back on youtube
52:55 amazed you did that in one try 😮
You were surprised when it went from horror to platformig back to horror. But wait when it goes Call of Duty and you'll regret the hard difficulty!
"brain mites"
pretty close
when will people learn: DON'T go dicking about with strange objects!
