      If you want to do a series on New Age psychobabble, Deepak Chopra is primed for a good reaming. I always thought it strange that the master of mystical truths needs to put out book after book instead of revealing all in one volume. Also I love the way he gloms to whatever is fashionable in science and grafts it into his lectures.

      Well, in medicine, steam is being used for sterilization... of termoresistant materials (bedsheats, clothing, uniforms, metal and glass instruments and containers, etc.). If you were to use it on living tissues at temperatures needed to do the job you would cause massive burns, even more severe ones on the mucous lining of the cavities due to them lacking the corneal layer (stratum corneum) of the skin.

    • @mikeoxlong1395
      @mikeoxlong1395 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @ElephantsLover I'm not entirely sure so i am going to speculate a bit. To blow something up the vagina or a another orifice i'd assume the source of steam should be close to it. In a spa, steam tends to spread out resulting in smaller concentration of heated water per unit of surface and less heat being transmitted (that is what i'm speculating).
      Also, skin has sweat glands which release sweat which aids in cooling, both directly and by covering the the body with electrolyte rich water which further disperses the heat. Sweat also evaporates taking heat it absorbed to do so with it.
      Another important distinction is the outermost layer of the epidermis. While histiologically similar, being multi layered squamous epithelial tissue, skin has an additional layer of practically dead skin cells called stratum corneum which offers additional protection.
      This doesn't mean that you can injure skin with steam, you can cause burns. It's just that it makes skin more resistant than the more vulnerable vaginal lining.
      Andsteam could cause damage to the vaginal microflora (bacteria and fungi which normally live there), i think, resulting in opportunistic and external infections.

      @ElephantsLover You're mistaking water vapor for steam, a common mistake. Remember that actual steam is invisible, it's the cooling water vapor that makes the 'steamy' clouds we all know and love~

    • @thomasraahauge5231
      @thomasraahauge5231 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Lalogue: I may have been less than specific about homeopathy.
      Just like "medicin" is a wide variety of things, so is homeopathy. LSD was subscribed by psychiatrists for schizophrenia, psychosis, and other severe conditions. Needles to say, the practice was abandoned, along with a lot of other medical practices.
      Some homeopathic prescriptions are complete bonkers. Like "crystal water", which is purified water that has been "exposed" to the "healing properties" of various crystals. Even a drunken cat lady can tell, that this is utter nonsense. In fact, these kinds of "cures" make up the vast majority of "homeopathy".
      It has been discovered, that some chemical compounds, that are poisonous in higher (or indeed lower) doses, have medical properties if diluted to certain concentrations. A few of these compounds have been approved after rigorous testing, but the practice of homeopathy is not widespread, as few doctors are trained/qualified.
      On the other hand: if wearing a crystal in your pocket makes you confident enough to live a good life, feel free to do so, but don't tell the rest of the world, that this crystal cures anything.

      Nihl Lhin I’m a hospice nurse so I’ll toss in my 2 pennies. Some “alternative” things such has yoga, meditations, and acupuncture do show some benefits in cancer patients. Mostly things like reduced stress, anxiety, and pain. The reduction in all these can help reduce the amount of opioid pain medication and anxiety medication needed. Medical marijuana does help improve the symptoms of illnesses. For example, reduce pain, anxiety, and increase the desire for food. Again things that can assist a person in their real treatments of various serious diseases. I’ve never seen or heard of marijuana curing anything though. I do believe that alternative medicine does have a place next to modern medicine and can help promote a healthy lifestyle. With that being said obvious scam companies such as Goop really does a lot of damage to those who buy it. Some people are just damaged because they waste their money on the snake oil they sell. Other could suffer more medicinal issues because their deception. Not good at all

      I agree with you, but one important thing to keep in mind is something the video said: There is no "alternative medicine" there is only medicine that works. Natural remedies that work are not "alternative medicine", they are just medicine. I think it's better to think of it that way because categorizing things into "conventional medicine" and "alternative medicine" gives the idea that no natural remedies are based on scientific evidence, which as Katrina pointed out, is very untrue, or it gives the idea that those who practice conventional medicine do not encourage natural remedies or lifestyle modifications as a cure for disease. They're not 2 competing fields as we are sometimes led to believe, they're all part of the same field meant to reduce morbidity and mortality and promote optimal health.

    The only woo that I really like or appreciate (NOTE: I am aware that it has no scientific basis and that it's bullshit) is crystals. I like the aesthetic of the amethyst that's carved into a obelisk, or a jade amulet for luck. I base my appreciation for this solely on the emotional response that beautiful minerals trigger in me, not on any "superpowers" people claim they have. I'm aware it's bullshit, but if I had my way, I would have a house full of "healing" crystals.

    • @efoxkitsune9493
      @efoxkitsune9493 5 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      There is nothing wrong with crystals or any other kind of placebo/"alternative" practices, AS LONG AS YOU DON'T USE IT TO SCAM AND EXPLOIT PEOPLE. If it works for you, amazing! Go for it! It doesn't need to have a scientific basis to help you (even if that help is purely emotional - still relevant!). The power of placebo is pretty remarkable, and sometimes that alone is enough to help. It's just important to stay in touch with reality and not try to cure, say, stage four cancer with crystals exclusively. But that doesn't mean that anything "alternative" has to be dumb and/or pointless. I believe that there's time and place for "alternative medicine", and there's time and place for seeing an actual doctor.

    Fun fact: Walking on grass, especially in places where animals leave their dung, in lakes or rivers, is particularly risky, as there is an elevated chance of contracting hookworms or tape worms, some really nasty parasites.

      Some homeopathic treatments have therapeutic qualities but they're not usually an alternative for medicine which has active ingredients in the right amount to work. Aspirin for instance is the same chemical found in willow bark, but you'd much rather have an aspirin than willow bark because the synthetic version is safer and more reliable than a natural ingredient which can have different amounts and quality of the active ingredient.
      Even then, a lot of homeopathic remedies use the placebo effect which is strong enough that drugs have to outperform the placebo by a certain amount in order to be made available.

    Something that strikes me is there are still a lot of people who haven't figured out yet that you shouldn't listen to celebrities, just because they are celebrities. Most of them are narcissists and morons who have been blinded by being buried in a world of massive privilege that they got to by some combination of talent at a certain skill like acting or singing, luck, connections, birth right(actor's children being actors). They indulge in all kinds of expensive things to improve their lives when they already have everything most people dream of. Statistically I'm sure you could say they have the best lives, as they have the most access to things which should make a positive difference, though they often end up being sad, lonely, people. Possibly even worse off on average than the the plebs they entertain. Many of them outright disdain their own fans, while also simultaneously telling them how they should live their lives, even if they couldn't be bothered to say hi to one of them.

It seems to show great results, but the efficiency of ayurvedic treatments has also been put to actual scientific tests to prove that they work. So before going full alternative medicine, I'd basically suggest people to do their homework and _research_ their shit, because it may very well keep them from spending their money on utter crap.

    Walking barefoot is great, until you get lost in thought and you realize you've wandered off the grass and that your foot is bleeding cause you've cut your foot open on a rock, and you left the grass cause you see a bunch of insects crawling around and a lot of pointy sticks. And then your foot gets infected cause you left your shoes behind and you gotta limp all the way home and expose the cut to good ole ground bacteria ,story of my life. Thank god for peroxide

    I went to a state museum gift shop and bought those exact same crystals and rocks in two small bags (total of 20 rocks) for $10, $5/bag. And that was at a gift shop, and the rocks are really pretty, I can use them to make jewelry, this is all bs.

    • @thomasraahauge5231
      @thomasraahauge5231 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Pretty rocks serves one important purpose: they are nice to look at, and it *IS* beneficial for your health to have nice things that you appreciate around you. From there to "they are magical and cures anything and everything" is more than just a far stretch. Heck, my parents a very nice quartz crystal I found in the mountains as a kid, and they are fond of it. I wish I had found one for myself, too, but I have the cutest teddybear in the world, so I'm good.

      It's very hard to know what to believe if you don't have the education to interpret scientific literature. Some people don't trust "science" and genuinely believe the scientific community are part of a big conspiracy or maybe they just don't understand that science and alternative medicine aren't just two equally-valid competing fields. There's so much misinformation out there, especially now with the internet allowing everybody to feel like an expert, it's becoming more and more difficult for people to know what to believe

      I may be mistaken but I think the regulations are better in Europe than America. Like, in Britain we still have herbal medicines and some Chinese medicine, but these are only harmless and I don't think they are allowed to hide disclaimers in small print, plus most of these practitioners work closely alongside the NHS. The state does intervene in cases of serious deception or when the product is actually dangerous (I think?). Basically alternative fake medicine is legal, but there is no public money on it and they aren't allowed to advertise or brand in such a way as to look legit (1)
      Practitioners of two complementary treatments - osteopathy and chiropractic - are regulated and qualified just like conventional doctors. The NHS gives advice on alternative medicine, but basically warns you not to ever rely on it (2)
      (1) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regulation_of_alternative_medicine#United_Kingdom
      (2) www.nhs.uk/conditions/complementary-and-alternative-medicine/

      Unfortunately, as long as they add a disclaimer, they're not doing anything illegal as far as I'm aware.
      Part of this is definitely desperation, combined with being disillusioned with mainstream science. That's one thing I should have addressed more in the video, because Goop deliberately sets itself up as an 'alternative' and uses the backlash to its own advantage. They're clever like that.
