  • The author of ‘The Encyclopaedia of Spring Air Pistols’ John Griffiths shows us the reproduction non-commercialised air pistols he made, based on patent drawings from Webley, Lincoln Jeffries, Haenel and others.
    Pistols in order:
    The Webley Whiting ( W.J. Whiting/Webley 1910)
    Twist -grip (F.Clarke, J.W. Fearn and D.V.Johnstone, 1923 )
    Lincoln Jeffries overlever (L.P. Jeffries, 1926 )
    Hill two-stage pistol (A. H. Hill 1933)
    Thunderbolt Senior ( Frank Clarke Lead Products/ W.J. Walker, 1945 )
    Webley Mercury (H.F. Resuggan/Webley, 1981)
    Haenel Model 250 repeater (E. Leyh / ETW Suhl, 1954)
    As always a big thank you to John Griffiths for continuing to contribute his knowledge and enthusiasm to the channel.

    Although it doesn't have much power, I really love the design and the look of the pistol with the long barrel.

    Inspirational. Patent drawings are a long way from what a machinist needs to get going. Much work interpreting and problem-solving before anything moves. Then begins the large number of machining processes involved- each requiring careful setting. No shortcuts. No CNC. Proper 'old-school'. Spins me out just the thought of it!...Great work John! - these and the book! Thanks so much Matt for the presentation- Fabulous close-ups at the end btw! :-)

      The work John has put into these is amazing, his written accounts of exactly how he worked it all out and made them work is shows his extreme patience. Glad we managed to get them on film. Cheers, Matt

    Matt, thanks for bringing us Johns amazing collection of hand built prototypes in such a quality production. 👍 Of all Johns pistols my vote goes to the Haenel 55R as the one I would most like to own. Excellent work John, well done.

      Thanks Mark, he’s a genius, glad I could help share it. Twist grip was the most intriguing, great to cock and shoot. Got to shoot the Webley Mercury too as it was one of my favourites. Great stuff

    You did a terrific job building air pistols from those old patents, especially that first Webley air pistol!
    It has a resemblance to the first Webley semi automatic pistols made around WW1.

    • @dkjngl1
      @dkjngl1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Speaking in John’s behalf, if you look up ‘Webley & Scott 1911 target pistol’ you’ll see the long barrelled automatic target pistol the Webley Whiting air pistol was based on. Check out the vid on his Gallery pistols we made. They are my favourites. Cheers

    Love the Wallace and Gromit of the design. Well done in bringing them to life. Easy to see how the Acvoke was a success and the others never made production.

    The most talented gunsmith in the world in my opinion. You should be making and selling these, I know it's a labour of love but you'd soon be a gunsmith God in everyone's eyes. Great video by the way.
    I agree the oldies are the best made pistols, I own many.

    Very interesting video. It would be very enjoyable to visit John Griffiths workshop and see it in operation. Perhaps you can put a video together
    on him and his shop. Thanks very much for your and John's efforts. Stay healthy my friends!

      Hi Ron, John isn’t doing any projects at the moment, but he did take loads of photos of the process involved in making some of the pistols. Maybe I could put together a timeline montage of the construction of one of the pistols if you think it would be of interest? Cheers, Matt

  • @yaarge2

    Fascinating video, have watched twice. You mentioned possibility of timeline photos showing construction processes involved, that would be fantastic. Am new to all this and would love to have some idea of the processes involved. Thanks for posting 👍👍

    • @dkjngl1
      @dkjngl1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment, I’m hoping to put something together showing how he made them, only as a photo montage as John took lots of pictures showing the construction process. …maybe as a winter project when I can’t get out to shoot. Thanks, Matt

    My 1917 BSA Lincoln Standard still flattens pellets on my bell target. Rebuilt had to get firearms lic as it hit 750fps! in 177. Is the Hy score 400fps?

    The 'spiral' action is interesting. Technically, one could acheive the same with a screw thread but would need a lot of turns to cock the spring! Anyway, this is high-tech compared to the push-in pistols with which you can't hit an elephant at three feet!

    I am quite surprised that no one has put together a pro documentary film about John Griffifths work making unrealised airgun patents and his book about air pistols. I would guess there is an audience for a film like this all around the world! There are so many airgun enthusiasts. Let this be food for thought for anybody with a PRO background. What was John's type of work? A machinist or ?

    • @dkjngl1
      @dkjngl1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is the best documentation of these air pistols we’re going to get, so spread the word! John is a scientific academic and does these types of projects as a hobby.

    would love to purchase the Arther hill Birmingham repro, absolutely brilliant. What it lacks in ease of use in loading, It makes up for in sheer beauty. Do you know if any of these are for sale?

    • @dkjngl1
      @dkjngl1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wish! No…I believe John has made them as personal projects and they are not for sale. I’d love to own one of the Gallery pistols he made featured in my other video of his work.

    Well made guns but how did you black the steel work

    • @JohnGriffiths-ko9fz
      @JohnGriffiths-ko9fz ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The guns were blacked by the hot alkali salt method, which has been the gun industry standard method since the 1940's. It is not to be recommended for the amateur gunsmith unless he is comfortable working with dangerous chemicals, as it uses a concentrated solution of caustic soda at 140 degrees C. Apart from that, it yields excellent results.
