That's not Phra That Phanom, that looks like Phra That Nakorn. The one you mentioned is about 50kms away in another town called That Phanom (still in Nakhon Phanom). It's considered to be one of the most revered temples in Thailand and is said to hold the rib bone of Buddha.
Also, I think you should be doing Isaan its proper dues and venture out into the rural areas and meet the farmers. You'd be surprised at just how different it is. All the main towns are mostly clones of each other.

Yes Phra That Phanom is about 30 minutes south of Nakhon Phanom. That is indeed an amazing temple. I was there during a large ceremony on January 1:st 2020. I stayed for hours inside the temple and soaked in the atmosphere. Probably the strongest Thai experience I had so far.

@@fair98fair Different farmers plant different crops sometimes even same crops in a different way. You would be surprised at how many different types coconuts there are. Same for potatoe or banana and most other. If You just rush by on a bike off course you just see ... ahh a coconut tree ... visiting a farm and see how for instance how palmsugar ist harvested and made can be for sure a surprisingly entertaining expierience.

Totally agree with you and Gary. My favourite place in Thailand I have visited and will only be an hours drive from my new home. Spent many weekends there and was a big factor in my decision where to live.
Wonderful vibe particularly in the evenings and at weekends with the walking street market. The restaurant cruise which leaves next to your cruise is also great value.
The cycling lane has now been completed and you can cycle for miles along the Mekong. Great to see the coffee wagon man still there on the front.

Hey Paddy, beautiful video as always - unfortunately You made a little mistake. The temple we see in Your video is “Wat Phra That Nakorn“ NOT “Wat Phra That Phanom“. Wat Phra That Phanom is located 52 km south of Nakhon Phanom City. Its really worth a visit. Enjoy Your trip.

I loved the Roaming Cook’s take on this place and yours too. I’m seriously considering venturing up north for a trip next time I’m in Thailand. I visited Chang Mai 30 years ago, but have mainly been in Bangkok, the islands and neighbouring countries since. This series has made me realise that there is so much more to Thailand. Thanks Paddy.

What makes Nakhon Phanom different than other cities in Issarn, is that it has Vietnamese Influence, along with Thai & Issarn. Ho Chi Minh lived here and the mix of the three cultures is quite unique.

Glad you’re enjoying the NE region of Thailand, Paddy. After 14 years working near Sriracha I moved to Roiet province and Isaan is like a different country to me. ( Rural…music…food…history) It is definitely not for the “city slicker” or the traveler who only has a couple weeks to explore but it takes some adjusting and research to know where to go. Best of all, the locals are friendly….they may seem “distant” at times but it is because they are not use to being around “farangs”. Definitely a Leo will add to the socializing.

Hi, Paddy, “my waan” (ไม่ หวาน) means “not sweet” (doesn’t mean “no sugar”).
So when you order “not sweet” they add less sweetener. For “no sugar” try:
“Do not use sugar” , “please”
    “Yarh dsye naam taan” , “dye fraught” (อย่า ใช้ นำ้ ตาล , ได้ โปรด).

FYI : mai wan is not sweet, sometime they assume to be less sweet.
wan noi is less sweet, so you should say mai sai nam tarn which is don’t put sugar in it.

Hi unfortunately you are wrong about Wat Phra That Phanom. It is not in the city of Nakhon Phanom. Instead it is in nearby city about 40-50 km away called That Phanom!!

Paddy you remind me of my Superglue disaster! On a flight from Bangkok to Singapore 20 years ago I broke a front tooth in my denture. I had Superglue in my carryon so off to the bathroom and stuck the broken tooth back in place. I foolishly put the denture back in my mouth before the glue had dried and spent the rest of the flight with my tongue glued to my denture.

I love this Mekong cruise Paddy. Thank you for sharing it. If I'm not mistaken, the Catholic church must be the influence the French Colonial era during the French colony of French indo-China (Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam).

Hi Paddy. If you're travelling south from Nakhon Phanom, try Mukdahan and perhaps try a break from travelling on Dreamy at Loeng Nok Tha (nearest town to my birthplace). You might also be fascinated to find a disused airfield built by the British Army at Ban Khok Samran just a few KMs south of Loeng Nok Tha

For coffee no sugar, say gaafae Mai sai namtaan. (Mai sai namtaan = no/don't add sugar).
For camera fix, buy a 60baht two parts epoxy resin. Stronger than superglue and ideal travel fix for torn shoes, bags, etc. Cheers

Booze cruise, Love it. Paddy you are in "No Time to be Sad" country of Chuck and Paige. Some real nice you tubers. Love the coffee Van thought about doing a few of those myself. My ex-wife of twenty years is Isan, so I have eaten a lot of Isan food. I agree with you Paddy. I really don't like all the organ meats they use. I have a running joke with her. I always ask whats on the menu for the day. She would say "See food" ie what ever crossed her path that day is what they eat. Could be fish, bugs, snakes, spiders, scorpions. ect. I once ate deep fried grasshoppers not bad.
