We had about a 5 yd pour, patio where we were trying to match up a previous stenciled pad. Weather in N.W PA is so perfect (sarcasm) and always predictable. There was NO rain in the forecast. We were wheel barrowing all the concrete so after we started, we just got the first part of it screeded off when we heard the thunder. 5 minutes later, there was a 10 minute downpour where we had standing water on the pad. We were standing in the customers house, looking at the pour, knowing it was destroyed but trying to reassure them it was fine. We got the water off / out as much as possible and started pushing again. We get to the last foot of the pour and the driver said we were out of concrete. We had to send a guy to the local Lowes to buy 15 bags of quickrete, mix those along with the product on the ground tp try and match it as much as possible. We finished it and to this day....it looks amazing; no issues. Our saving grace with the short load was the customers relative prepped the pad. We learned very fast not to trust someone when they say they lasered it and it's "perfectly" 4"......

We were pouring footings for a house and couldn’t get concrete till 3pm. I decided to use a power buggy since it wasn’t a very big house. The house is in the city and had little access so we couldn’t get the mixers close to the foundation hole and it was so muddy the wheel barrows would hardly go threw the mud. The house had a crawlspace and we were dumping from over the bank into the footing. We poured about 100’ of footing no problems. Then when we got around to an inside corner the bank caved in and the buggy flipped down into the hole and threw me up in the air and down in the mud. We got the buggy back up out of the hole and started cleaning up the mess. I had the new guy run the buggy for a minute while the rest of us cleaned up the mess and while we weren’t paying attention he filled about 40’ of footing at least 12 - 16 inches above the pins around the garage that had dirt all the way up to ground level. We went to start shoveling the concrete and it was up to my knee caps… It felt like we shoveled a whole mixer full out of those footings trying to level it back out. I had already sent part of the crew home because “it was an easy pour and we wouldn’t need them for that quick afternoon job” boy was I wrong. I put out a mayday call to a good friend that’s a contractor and he rushed over to help us and we finally finished about 8:30 that night two hands on the trowel trying to make it look somewhat presentable. Two of the guys got concrete poisoning on their ankles from it being over there boots, one of which has to be one of the all time worse cases ever. Surely the worst I’ve ever seen. Surprisingly the block layers only had to trim 6 or 8 block…
    Also Jim is the man!

To each his own, me? I figure I'd want cement to roll trash cans to the road, kids bicycling, less mowing, more increased value to property - but that's just me. I guess that was a good save to the joist under house at back door, the rot was minor, it won't grow? Owners should have definitely waterproofed it the first time. The patio is beautiful even wout color! Y'all did a fantastic job and barely left any tracks! One mowing will erase anything left, great job guys! I'm amazed w every video. The time laps of the stamp was sort of neat, seeing the change happen quickly like that. I liked that! Vacation time nearing! Yay! Thanks Tom, loved every second of today's video! 👍👌❤🇺🇸

I was wheelbarrow man, told our boss it was gonna rain and it did,he was adamant that it wasn’t. Chute was 7.5 foot above the ground and couldn’t be scraped. We were soaked and i swear i wore 3 yards slopping when it blooped in the wheelbarrow and dumping from above. Rained all day, the next day was spent throwing Portland and burning up 2 sets of bird blades getting yelled at by the boss (like it was our fault) , took 6 hours to bring it back but we saved it. 40x 60 basement. Blessings.

Pouring a bridge deck on a major interchange reconstruction. 12 men on the deck with a big 8” pump working and a 40 foot Bidwell paver. The temporary joist hangers between the beams rotated and dropped a 12x12 area of the formwork to the ground 16 feet down. The only thing keeping the crew in place was the dense rebar mat (12x12 pattern, upper and lower). Nobody hurt. But a hell of a mess trying to wash the green concrete off the forms and rebar to salvage as much as we could and setting a header until the incident could be investigated and corrected. We retro-fitted a couple hundred hangers so it would never happen again. The pour continued the next day as if nothing happened… 120,000 cars a day use that bridge and there isn’t even a bump to remember it by.

Got a call from a home owner to come out and pour the rear deck on his home it was about 12 ft off the ground all 12 inch block with a stone wall about 3ft6in high on top of the block all around !! He had install the steel decking himself and swore it was done right and would hold the weight of the concrete ,,,,it was 16x16 about 5 inches thick ! I wanted to see the bracing underneath but didnt have time before hand to check it out { lesson learned } !! Poured and finished the deck ,,exposed aggregate ,standing admiring our work we felt a little vibration and within 2 seconds the deck caved into the hole !! Talk about disheartening !! We ended up cleaning out the debris and repoured the deck . I brace it myself the second time using 2 8 inch beams just in case !! He had used a lot of used lumber to brace underneath ! That was the last time i ever did a job without checking it out before hand !

My last concrete job was actually my first concrete job. So about 2 days ago I made a 16"x16" concrete cube thingy to hold my flag pole that my kids got for my birthday. This pole came with the pvc sleeve to slide the flag pole into to display the flag. I didn't want to bury this tube all the way in the ground because I was wanting to put a raised flower bed around the flag pole so I wanted about 8" of pipe above ground level. So anyways, on Sunday I dug the hole, made the form and then mixed the concrete, I ended up coming up like a bag and half short. We're rural so this would have to carry over into Monday. So Monday after work I bought more concrete mixed it and poured it on top of the cured stuff. I also noticed my form was uneven, so now I dont know if I will ever try this again or not.

Landscaper from Melbourne, Australia 21 at the time also. Love your channel! About 12 months ago, we had this job, 30-35m2 of exposed aggregate for a client. We poured on a Saturday morning, went pretty smoothly a little bit hot but nothing crazy. The next day we came and washed it off, look perfect very happy result.
About a month later, the client called me and I came back, the entire surface of the concrete had started crumbling, the 7mm stone just falling out of the mix as you ran your hand over it. It looked horrible. Called the concrete company and they wanted nothing to do with it.
Ended up sending 4 of the boys, 4 jack hammers (no access), a 10m3 skip bin and 2 days of nothing but noise. Ripped the whole thing out, I had to go to another site because I couldn't watch haha. Solid loss for the business, but it is what it is.
Re-poured it with a different mix and company, same steps.. came out perfect! Keen to hear if any else has any horror stories like that hahah didn't sleep for months until it was fixed!

All 3 of us were all novice concrete pourers. We were pouring a friends rather large basement two of us wheeled
2 wheelbarrows of concrete to the far corner of the basement on the other side of a center wall and started to level it out. When we returned to refill our wheelbarrows we found our helper had instructed the driver to dump the entire remaining truck load in one large pile in the basement when we ask why he said I thought it would be easier to handle this way. Needless to say we worked our a-s off that day. We canceled the second load and poured it on a different day.

We realized the morning of the pour that the radius into the hallway was too tight for a wheelbarrow so we spent 4 hours carrying concrete in 5 gallon buckets. Then the 4,000 psi concrete took forever to set up and we were using towels to get the bleed water off. We ended up saving it / not having to tear it out but what a mess.

Horror story from Luzerne Co. PA. 1989-90 pouring a basement floor and attached garage. Basement has a walk-out side and all other walls are CMU already in place. Using a conveyor truck to hit far side (walk-out side). Truck is parked on the front, non walk-out side. Me and my buddy are doing the straight edging (“screeding here in North East PA). It’s going okay until we get to a point where we have to make a turn. We look behind us and dip-crap labor on the conveyor (tremmy ?) end has a pile waist high. He was shielded from the driver by the CMU wall. He said he tried to get him to stop but he wasn’t getting his attention. He wasn’t very emphatic because even my coworker and I were unaware of the mess he had started.
By the time we got the pile placed properly it was setting up on the truck(s). Boss man ( also a moron) insisted on getting on with the power trowel even though it wasn’t near ready yet. If I remember it was in the 30-40 yard size. Wasn’t long before we couldn’t move it with a rake and had to use a pick axe and a lot of water to get it somewhat in place. Worked 11 hours straight that day. Still don’t mind doing concrete work. ( we did soup to nuts on the bosses spec homes) you just need good help and a boss who doesn’t have crap for brains.

A few days later got a call about the footings being cracked in several areas . Went out to the job to see what had happened. Turns out in a few areas the cream on top showed some cracks mind you it was just the surface where some of the water came to the surface. The integrity of the concrete was not compromised in any way. Long story short. The customer flipped out and the builder caved and we had to pull it all up and Hull it away and re pour the footing all at our expense. We never worked for that builder again 🤷‍♂️ 🌴👍👍😎🌴

1980's my dad had a 1978 Bronco. The same line broke. He used dynamite wire he had from a construction site. Tied it up to the gas pedal everything worked like that for 20 more years, never fixed the dang thing the "right" way

In pittsburgh helping a guy over 20 yrs ago. I dug the footer for the garage. He used formadrain to form the footer. Real tight quarters couldnt get to 1/2 of it. He decides to water it up and let it run. All the formadrain floated not 1 part of the elevation was useable.

We were building a Seed Plant in Michigan. 9-1/2 days on 4-1/2 off. Last pour of the week before going home (500miles away)
We were pouring a 12-inch x12' foot tall wall x 100' long. Down to the last truck coming around a corner-----THEN SHE BLEW!!!!! The concrete just kept running out-----GRRRRRR that happened around 10 am-We didn't leave until 8 that night. Should have been done@ 11:30 am.
Went to the Bar and stayed another night :):)

Tom I worked one summer helping my buddy doing carpentry work and some small concrete jobs. He called me on a Saturday telling me he needed me on big pour and to hurry and get there. When I got there he said the concrete was on the way. As I was looking around the site I saw no forms in the two garage doors and nothing setting the floor drains height. When I ask about them he said a new guy said he did not need them. Well when the pour was done it was bad. The floor was full of waves and it was rough in big spots never troweled and the doors tapered to about a inch thick. The CONCRETE GOT HARD AND WE LOST A BIG PART OF IT. (There was a lawsuit)

Can’t get over how good of work you do you do such a good job on everything and I know very little about concrete I’d like to work at the ethics you have a super good crew I started watching you through outdoor with the Morgans very good people very good family I’ve said it already but you have a really good crew I like the way you guys work together and I like the way that you work with your crew if you were closer if I ever needed any work done I would definitely definitely have you do it but it’s kind of hard when you’re living over 2000 miles away or so I’m not sure how many miles keep up the good work you’re awesome

Good question we do this quite often. It’s in several videos . I took tin snips and cut the wire about a quarter inch into the concrete and float over. You never see them or rust mark again.

My worst concrete pouring nightmare! Pumping 300+ yards of concrete inside a working Anheuser-Busch brewery when a hose coupling came unhooked resulting in 2-3 yards of concrete spilling on the working brewery floor. Needless to say, the Brewmaster was not a happen person.

The young guy who worked for the builder built the forms for all the concrete. He had never did that before and therefore didn't understand how the forms came off. He built it to last! The concrete guys were not happy. He was educated by them. That young guy was me!

I watched a short video on concrete forms and as they were pumping the concrete in their forms started collapsing and it wasn't holding at all. So I'm sure that was an expensive fail.

Pouring an extra large smoker pad out by our Cache smokers on stilts (bear and wolf proof)....just after the pour it started to sink... within 10 minutes everything we poured sunk 8+ feet into a 11 x 16 foot sink hole!!! Worst part was the Cache smoker toppled into the hole also!! Not a good day at all, this was back in 1974!

Tom, one quick question how did that 12” Fresno Tool get it’s name. I live in Fresno California. A few years ago my wife and I were on a trip to Yellow Stone National Park, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument and Buffalo Bill Cody Museum in Wyoming. In the Buffalo Bill we saw a Fresno Scraper, also know as a slip scrapers or drag scrapers used to move dirt and stone when excavating earth. I believe the Fresno Scraper was made Fresno in 1883 to construct ditches and canals pulled by horses and named after the town which it was first built.

My worst nightmare for concrete was when my late wife and I was chosen for a habitat for humanity house and the volunteer builder used round river rock underneath the slab and didn't put in any cuts. Within a couple years the slab settled and cracked and left a huge canyon right through the middle of the kitchen floor tearing the vinyl with at least a 1 inch ledge to stub your toe on. It was a complete disaster! We had to tear up the vinyl, grind down the high spots, and re float the the kitchen and replace the flooring. That was many years ago, not sure if the house is still standing? Not a good idea to build a house on marbles! Peace and blessing.
