    I get such a killer metal distortion with this amp. No pedal comes close. I love this thing. Ya. Mine used to have a bad hum. But I got it fixed. Things held up since 2002 ish. Not bad if you ask me.

      Your right! The overdrive channel has good metal tone with the gain up! Little fizzy though!
      However a Boss ds1 pedal on the clean channel has that same sound as the overdrive with gain cranked but more full and not as thin!
      I'll play the overdrive channel on metal and love it but once I try the ds1 latter on in the jam it's the same sound but better!
      I only don't grab the ds1 when I'm lazy lol

    Just bought an AVT50 Combo. Hooked to my Celestion G12H-55Hz Heritage in a 1x12 cab - awesome! This is the 2nd suggestion I've taken from Johan. I also got an Epiphone Electar 10 that I wired up with a speaker out jack. Both are super cool. Thank you Johan!

    I gig all the time with a VS100 combo made in 1997. I have the matching 4x12 speaker cabinet with it as well. I put a JJ 12ax7 in it when the original tube went microphonic. This is one of the best sounding solid state hybrid amps out there on all the clean channels, crunch and lead channels. they're all smooth and sound really great. The speakers in these amps wer absolutely killer. I've always been a real tubes or nothing kind of guy, but I found this combo and cabinet on a local buy and sell for $300, single owner including footswitch and covers for the combo and cabinet, he had only gigged with it 4 times in 20 years and it sat in his basement...I couldn't pass that deal up and I've been glad I didn't ever since I got the amp...he even delivered it to me lol. Two things make this VS100, and the AVT50 style hugely functional: the contour knob for the lead channel,, and the FX knob on the front, it basically lets you go from a parallel to a series fx loop and blend those together. If you want something that is undoubtedly a Marshall through and through and sounds great, the AVT50 is a fantastic amp for anyone.

      I've been on a quest for a great solid-state amp for decades. In the 80s and 90s I used a Randall rg80 solid state. The only solid state I ever gigged with. I sold it I wish I didn't. I never got another Randall. you can look into those. I had a couple valve state amps. Right now I have a black star. It's good for the bedroom. But it sounds kind of fake when you crank it. I also have a hotone heart attack. You can check johans video for that one. I'm still searching. But they're all good enough for home use. In the eighties a lot of people are gigging with the Randalls.

    Johan, I enjoy your channel greatly! Happy to see the Marshall Valvestate get some props. A while ago I saw a VS100, 100w 1x12 combo on Craigslist for $20 US because the sound was intermittent. I'd never heard one, but bought it and, sure enough, it just needed the input solder joints re-flowed. I dropped an old Mullard 12ax7 in it and WOW! What a pleasant surprise - nice clean channel for pedals, and loud!
    And Johan, after seeing your video on the 12watt lead amp, I grabbed the first one I could find (1987, three piece stack). Thank you and keep 'em coming!

    I got the avt20 in 2001 and replaced the preamp tube with a made in america sylvania that greatly improved my tone. Plus with a cab it will keep up with most drummers. These amps were the cheap alternative to good tone before all these cheap tube amps started getting made in the last 10 years. I crank my for hours and haven't had a problem yet.

    • @GugaRamone
      @GugaRamone 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @George Frank The tube only working on the drive channel is true only for the first valvestate series (8080, 8040, 8100). The second (VS65, VS100) and third (AVT) generations have the tube working on both channels.

    I was at guitar center and a tried out the new dsl40cr..it was great..better than my old dsl40c..which was too harsh switching from classic gain to od1 and od2..Then I went to a pawn shop that had the exact amp you are playing here..It blew me away! Has the dslcr tone but a tighter bottom end with high gain settings. OMG one of best sounding Marshalls I have ever played! Bought it for $160 US on the spot! My AC-DC tribute band plays through 100 watt 1959s And jcm800s and my avt50 in comparison impresses the hell out of me!!

    I think this is actually the 2nd generation valve state because I have the AVT50 2000 and it's the last generation and press a GREAT amp, Jim Marshall said it was his favorite Marshall amp BEFORE he died . I love mine, sounds GREAT with a vintage celestion in it ! I used an 80 G12k 100 4 ohm for mine to get sweet sweet metal VINTAGE Marshall tone and it nails it.

    • @JohanSegeborn

      @auntjenifer7774 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Johan Segeborn * I think the 2nd Generation (the one you demoed) is just GREAT Sound wise but every valvestate I have come across has had problems with things going bad like components inside the amp crapping out or the insert Jack's going bad, but the 3rd Generation AVT50 2000 that I have is superior to all the others that I have encountered, sound and reliability are very Good on the avt 2000 that I have. I had 2 of the AVT50 2000 combo that I would use to get a kinda stereo effect going, and they worked great with no issues, sold one kept one 😉 See if you can get ahold of the AVT 2000 50 or 100 watts are very very SWEET solid state amps.

      I really don’t know why they get slated.
      Mine sounds like so so for 5 minutes but once that tube warms up it sounds great. It sounds like a classic Marshall, proper overdrive not silly distortion like on the MG series.

    I picked up an AVT150H probably 15 years ago and still play it today from time to time. Where I really think the AVT shines is the OD1 channel. It has a really great crunch and reacts very well with rolling back the guitar volume. I'll set the volume and gain both at 12 o'clock.
    The clean channel isn't bad. With good speakers it can sound pretty convincing. However, I'll choose my DSL15H every time.

      Blues Bengan - Yeah that's the right order. I've still got a 1993 8040 1x12 combo with reverb amongst my amps ... Marshall Products also played with valve/solid state hybrids in the early 70's. The Marshall Mercury 1x12 (5 watt) combo Model 2060 was the reverse of the valve states, with a solid state pre amp and EL84 power stage ... had one of those too as a kid starting out in the mid 70's but traded up soon after as is the way.

    Hi, Johan, how are you? First: greatest THAKS about VALVESTATE (I am the lucky owner, you know)! Second: I am really felt the difference in the sound of your LP (hard rock type) anf DEAN (Very "metallic coloured" that Caddilac). Dean's sound is very close to Washburn, Dime, you know... So now I know, what kind of sound will get the LP in my Amp!:-)))). Cheers!

      aunt jenifer THANK YOU VERY MUCH!:-) You will be surprised: just a few minutes before I wrote to Sam in the comment to Johan's last video: "I see, all the good people in the internet are currently on Johan's channel!" He is so positive, that here never was any conflicts between so large amount of subscribers, whyle on other channels sometimes you feel like kind of fighter.:-)
      Thank you very much! Maybe I am wrong, but I guess, here is everybody likes guitars. Currently my nickname was created from my favorit guitar. I am glad to see, that I am not alone, and I am happy about the fact, that somebody built excelent community for all guitar-lovers!:-)

    Unfortunately the valvestates used to break down on a regular basis. I had 2 of them in the nineties, both had the same issue with the power amp section. My buddies had the same problem. The only solid state I will ever use again is the Roland Jazz Chorus.

      Thanks Fabio, I'm so glad to hear that. The room is actually one of many in a rehersal spaces complex, but it does indeed have a nice reverberation. The room sound is panned to the right and there is also a slight amount of centered post reverb added. Cheers

    Hot damn! Those are some epic tones, Johan! I don't know how It sounded live, but it sounded amazing in this recording. What kind of space did you use to record this? I really liked the lively reverb sound of it. It almost sounds like it was recorded in a large parking garage! :)

    I have the head, and the cab- the speakers were awful (avt412)..threw a couple v30s in it and damn,,,smokes. Just picked up the matching 2x12 cab, didn't even know was one ?.. those speakers aren't bad- marshall gold backs, they're eminence, replacing one w the celestion g12t, like the 1960 cab has. But I tell you just a few min on those gold backs and not bad at all.
    Great head

      @@JohanSegeborn whats your opinon on the avt50, I just got the champion 40 and it sucks, do you know it?, its really dark and muddy, and doesn't take pedals well, I had before of that a valvestate 8040, loud as hell, but it just works on the clean channel, do you recommend this avt 50, or the katana 50, or anything else in that range?

  • @TonyWhelanSLIDES
    @TonyWhelanSLIDES 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I've tried . ...Valvestates always gave me ear fatigue. Run aside my 74 pull bright Deluxe Reverb that does not. I can't quite articulate the physics of what happens when the notes hit the ambient air...but there is a difference . ..come to think of it.. my yamaha Ra50 and 100 never cause ear fatigue . .

    • @JohanSegeborn
      @JohanSegeborn  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, I think the odd number order of harmonics in the Solid State distortion is less pleasing to the ear.

    • @TheZooman22
      @TheZooman22 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. It is probably because the tube amps do a better job of creating the even harmonic overtones, while the solid state amps basically generate the odd overtones at saturation levels. A Deluxe Reverb is just a nice amp.
