For the record, swimming in the Charles is not the best idea. Sewage drains directly into the river, and it is often closed due to dangerous bacteria being present.

How did the water get into the diesiel ?
@@savagex466-qt1io a couple things. Diesel cap had no seal between it and the filler neck. Neck is located in the rear which was lower in the water due to weight of occupants. Rich explains it in the last 2 minutes of the video

Well, this is one hell of a crew to have with you when your sherp dies on the river
there are fuel caps that fully seal, and have a breather hose coming out which you can put in a safe place.
This is what I was thinking too. As fuel is pumped out, air gets sucked into the tank to replace it. If it's underwater, it will actually suck water into the tank that way.
curious why the designers couldn't have the tank breather inside the cabin? or would that be a bad idea? my reasoning is that if water gets into the cabin you probably have bigger problems.
It seems crazy to me that the sherp isn't set up like that by default.

I have driven many hours in water and not had any problems. The cap is 100% sealed. Weird there wasn't a gasket on early models.
Love seeing a group of guys that instead of complaining when an adventure goes pear shaped they get going on solutions. Most of what makes an adventure an adventure is the unexpected!!

I did not expect a team up with Grind Hard, Between them and the EG crew it seems like a dream team to have when stranded in a Sherp on the river. Steven was the MVP being the guy willing to brave the water to get you to shore, though.
Another thing: It looks like there may be room to move the filler neck higher so it is above the water line.
That was my thought too. Much better than these guys trying to "engineer" a new cap design.

@@ChrisD4335 Well at least further up The roof not really as you may end up with another problem. You need it to be above the water line recessed in and a screw cap with more than 2 inches of thread. This should be more than enough. Major flaws like this are killer.

If the tank is warm from the motor when entering the water it will suck it in as it first cools.
On 4WD's this is a big problem not only with fuel tanks but axles and trans as well.
To solve this add breather lines that mount up high with S traps as well, 1/4 inch line will do for most vehicles.
