From what I've gathered from my father's experience, it was often the result of the fact that anybody could be aiding the VC or VC themselves and the thought of those people killing their buddies or themselves made them blur the lines. Thats not to say he condoned it, he was furious when he heard some people in his unit got in a chopper after an attack and razed a village to the ground, killing men, women, and children. I think it still haunts him to this day. He never told me about it, I only found out after I found a video of him talking about it at a veterans gathering. Real war is no joke. I'm glad that we are fortunate enough to do this shit in a virtual game and have a laugh than have to experience it ourselves IRL. We are fortunate.
