- A science major may select from an array of career paths. Many of these paths are non traditional and less known but intriguing.
Dr. Dwight Randle is professor of Chemistry and Biology at Richland College. He taught as a special chemistry instructor for the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland while working on a Ph.D. in biochemistry at the University of Maryland.He has served as Science and Medicine Advisor for the American Heart Association, and as Senior Science Advisor and Director of National Research Grants for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. He served on the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for Baylor Research Institute which is charged with the regulatory and patient protection oversight of clinical research. He has served as a board member on the Dallas Chapter of Sisters Network Inc., breast cancer survivorship organization which advances breast health for women of color. He owns a thriving photography company which specializes in natural landscapes and portraiture.

for all the students here: your major or degree does not equal your job. it’s just your launch point into the world. stick with it and graduate. if you got a degree in chemistry but want to go into law, you can do it. if you majored in engineering and want to work at the FBI, you can do that. your degree lets you bring your unique experience into new career directions. your degree is just the first step.
God bless the algorithm for recommending me this right now. I am fresh out of high school, and I have no idea what to do. I love science and I would certainly enjoy teaching it, but I don't see myself anywhere in the future. I am terrified of growing up like that and being lost and unsure. I hope I can find my calling soon, one that lets me have a balance between my professional and personal life.
This just changed everything for me. I am a biology student going into my second year of college and have no idea what my end goal is. But this has given me some inspiration. I am one of those students who never wanted to work in a hospital, lab, or research setting. I want to do something bigger. Something that suits me. Like many of the people shown, I want to do more than just biology in my life. I want to be part of many industries doing the things I love.

It's so hard to decide! I don't want to be stuck to one job. I want to do so many things! And it's hard because colleges are so strict around the four year plan, there's hardly any room to try anything before deciding without adding extra years. There's not even room in the four year plan for a double major unless you plan on not doing anything but homework and studying all day everyday.

I completely understand what your saying. I suspect that if you examine all the things you're interested in, you'll find at least one common theme. Embrace the common theme and let that be the focus of your passions. Doing this will put a new framework around what you're studying which will make relevant and actionable possibilities more obvious to you. There'll be many jobs in your life. There'll be time to explore your interests. it is likely that your common theme is invariant because it is as much a part of you as your blood is. And like your blood, living without it is not possible. So press on, as you must, and take comfort in knowing that neither your education nor your options, will end when you graduate.
Fellow bio major. Short tip. Finish your course, do your best. If a good research path comes up, you can take it. Otherwise, leverage a talent you have to enter a tangential employment or start a business Trust me -- the bio education comes into play every so often, it's practically an unfair advantage. You just have to spin it the right way.

It took me 9 years after high school to find my right fit. I love fungi. It sounds weird, but after a decade and a half of being grossed out by mold and other fridge-borne fuzzies, I started to do research, and I gained an immense appreciation for these micro (and macro) organisms. Currently I’m going back to college in order to gain the insight to research these keystones of all the world’s ecosystems. I couldn’t be happier, and I am in support of all the others who have not yet found their true fit

Wow! That gave me courage! I'm in my last year of high school and im changing major the very last minute (from computer sciences/economics to medical sciences) I've lost a whole year of studying so I don't think I'll be able to get into university on my first try but im planning on trying next year as well. dude i wish i was interested in fungi. so i could create compounds out of them but for now im sticking with ecology (no idea where thats gonna get me xc)

For real, follow your dreams. I just happen to be meant for science. I love the humanities too. But that’s good; science requires the humanities. Without creativity, science is non-progressive.
I quit med school recently to do general science because I didn't have a set ambition, I wanted to be a scientist, I didn't want to tunnel my life into one super single field that would land me a great paying socially prestigious job. But even this degree requires me to choose a major out of the plethora of various subjects. This pressure of specialisation disturbs me greatly because there is not one thing that interests me best, I have always been fascinated by polymath but it seems like today at this age, such a thing would not be encouraged in a school or university system. But this pressure to streamline my mind and filter out something over a short period of time was exactly what caused me to drop out in the first place. My parents wanted me to be a doctor to impress a stereotype and earn money, but everyday in class I found myself daydreaming of all the other things I liked, I missed the physics, the maths, the arts. It eventually became crippling because I wanted to be everything I saw in the most possible capacity, and I came here out of helplessness, because I have this dawning premonition that if I didn't specialise into a socially esteemed field I am most likely to end up starving and homeless. I guess I am too insatiable for my own good.
I know this feeling as well. It may be the case that you will have to chose a specific field to study, but remember that does not mean you cannot learn about other fields. Also remember that science, especially in the modern age, has become a large collaborative effort. You will be given the opportunity to learn from brilliant people in different fields as well as work with them. Keep that passion my friend!

as a junior in high school that’s my biggest fear. I’m too curious about everything and I can’t be tied down to one set way of thinking, or doing. I find that to be successful as a doctor you have to specialize in one field, but specialization sets a boundary that you can’t step out of. I can’t stand not having the flexibility to explore every nook and crevy of the books, ideas and places I encounter.
I’m thinking of planning a gap year after high school to think things through. That might be a good option between undergrad and grad school too.
Minerva Kroes you should definitely watch Emilie Wapnicks Tedtalk and book about multipotentialites!!!! Cuz it sounds like youre a multipotentialite:) it was really inspiring and helpful!! And i honestly feel the exact same way about having to do something socially prestigious. Ahh it bothers me so much that ‘academic’ intelligence is so prized. Ive always loved bio and art and so many other subjects and i just cant decide >.< Ken Robinsons speech for School of Life was also an amazing watch for this subject btw:)

erikarosep it’s so funny I stumbled across this again after so many months, because I’ve just recently applied to colleges and I put down Neuroscience as my intended major. But something just felt so wrong about it.Then last month, I was having a chat with my school principal... who hardly knows me... and he asks me if I was going to med school. I of course said yes, that’s the plan. He just stares at me and goes “kid, I can just sense that you’re not the conventional type. I know so many people who go to med school thinking they can change the system or be different and they always end up conforming. Did you ever think about engineering?” So now In in my senior year of high school, I picked up AP physics and I’m doing well. Honestly at this point I’m just trying to figure out how to retire by the time I’m 30 so I can do whatever I want 😭😂😂

The answer is my hobbies. I stay up late painting rocks, baking clay, crocheting bags and writing fiction. See, my hobbies require money and that money is earned by working as a researcher. I have BS Biology and MS Genetics degrees. And being an employee/researcher is the safest route for me. However, with no hopes of ever getting a promotion despite of my excellent performance reviews and the lack of vacancies in my field/area of expertise, I have accepted the fact that I need to pursue a PhD. This time, it would be on Environmental Science. To add management, policy-making and other skills in my CV. But I stay up awake wondering, what if I just focus on my arts and crafts, on my stories... Maybe I could sell them. And then the image of my mother angry at me puts me back to reality. When you are not financially stable or rich, you are not free to think only for yourself. But hope, that maybe I can still do them on the side while pursuing a phd and after my phd.
This made me think about what i should pursue, i really want to be a physicist, but engineering might be way safer even though I don't enjoy it as much.
The separation of hobbies/passions/liked subjects and career/workplace is something that can be hard. The best of both worlds is only achievable through taking risks for some, like physics, the choice is ultimately about taking the risk or not.

i am a nursing major and i really felt so happy about being a registered nurse because i love the medical field and i also love helping people but i got a C in microbiology and feel so discouraged. I love science and i love asking questions for anything. Microbiology is a course that needs a bunch of knowledge like genetics, chemistry, math, human physiology, and i feel that i wasn't strong enough in genetics. i worked so hard and i still end up with a C. Universities want people with 3.5 gpa for nursing major and this course lowered my gpa three points low :(
i want to major in biology and become a genetic counselor probably. as a nurse, i would be a pediatrics RN but now i am not competitive enough with that C in microbiology. due to my limited knowledge in genetics, i started reading about genetics after. and i feel like wanting to be a counselor like genetic and help couples in stuff like this. i am not sure. i need help. i like nursing but that C makes me want to die. :((

What do you call a Dr. that graduated lowest in his class?
Initialy studying human anatomy may appear very difficult. It's true that it is complex and your studies will not alter that. As for it being overwhelming, this can be solved if you take it one step at a time. I discovered an article on Sebs Study Crammer very helpful for this.
I think for me my right fit would probably be either the music/entertainment industry or helping the environment in any number of ways- studying growth of trees, fungi, earths layers, geology, or even the ways ice has come together to form glaciers in the arctic for millennia. I would love to be on some ship in the arctic and study something like that, as insane as it sounds:) I love knowledge, and knowing how to help something or someone.

i feel lost again :( at first i loved art, it was my passion. I was set on pursuing a degree in it. After HS i realized i wasnt as creative and hated it. I thought "how about English teacher?" i loved writing and reading but as a job? i ditched the idea, it wasnt for me. Currently, im on the road towards ecology, but what can i do with that? conservation doesnt capture my interest as it did before and working in a park isnt bad but im not sold on the idea. What has held my interest is the creation of biodegradable packages yet, where can i find that career? What is it called? How will i know ill like it? im not rich, i dont want to waste money on meaningless classes and i dont want to waste time!!!

E: i also want to start a business, actually a company and compete with others in the same category. I want it in every supermarket but does that mean i have to get a business degree? I find that horribly boring. It is still an idea that needs to be created, perfected, certified, packaged, and made wholly available to consumers.
ik theres packaging engineers, that job seems overwhelming. Material engineer? big nope. polymer scientist? polymer chemist? maybe but which one? -(;n;)-
I am a banker but wanted to be a scientists. It is a b*** when parents interfere in what to study in college. I wanted to study chemistry or environmental science but got forced to do something else. Yes a banker is prestigious but hate the job. No i am turning 31 and considering a career change. I am thinking about bioinformatics. I have a huge interest in computers, biology and chemistry

SUPER INSPIRATIONAL
I like the overall message that was being conveyed although I can't help but sense irony in his words. The fact world is hyper competitive now. Everyone has a Bachelors and most everyone in entry level positions have at least a masters in their field. For every one hiring position like a professorship job there are 1001 PhD applicants who weren't successful in their attempts. This is survivorship bias. What do we do with the vast numbers who are wasting their intellectual potential away? What meaning is their in life and work when the markets spout prestigious role after prestigious role of the likes of; Customer Service Artist or Insurance Sales Specialist at IDGAF About You Corp. What fruits will we bear for our future children in an educated yet fundamentally under-stimulated society?

Majored in microbiology. I wanted to do Medical field but realized it wasn't my thing. Been working in the lab sector for some years now. I absolutely hate it. I have zero desire to pursue a Master's on any biology. This video really helped, and will very likely rewatch it a more than once.

I've always wanted to be a scientist that can cure or treat diseases since I love seeing these colorful chemicals being made to make something new such as curing cancer (something like that). However I'm discouraged since most of the science requires a PhD

I am a second year medical laboratory science student and yet here I am unsure of what I truly want to do. The future of me in the lab examining specimens were blurry and unclear. Until now I am contemplating what I want and what God has me for the future. I felt like life is too short to be stucked in a room of uncertainties so I have to do what I want but the problem is, my mind is doubtful of myself unsure of what I truly want

ill be a chem major soon got accepted in the science college but for me my goal is to be a scientist specifically a type of chemist (industrial medicinal agricultural environmental etc) or biotechnologist or microbiologist or maybe even medical scientist and I'm really interested in research! like drug discovery polymers bio materials environmental process chemistry biomedical organic synthesis natural products synthesis and inorganic synthesis etc but the problem is I've always been kind of a failure cause i didn't always work hard usually things just happened until i discovered that i really really love science and that was like 100% my effort cause you know school sucks for stuff like that sadly for me cause I've been reading a lot about science etc astronomy is what got me into it science lol i did decide that I'm going to change and actually put effort but i always keep having doubts and second guessing my self and wondering if that's a good decision especially the things i read about how chemistry can be really boring if you end up at a quality control job doing the exact same test for the whole job and how i keep reading that you absolutely need a PhD in fields like that i hope all that is not true in my country (qatar) and that a masters in science is sufficient otherwise i may go chemical engineering and try that way XD

money is tangible, but dreams are abstract. it is very easy to get lost when chasing abstract things and become desperate, because dreams are not reality.
i feel so lost ik I want to persue music but a music career doesnt have a lot guarantee. i grew up in a family with financial struggles so I really just want to make sure I dont make kids fall into the same financial struggle so I dont know what to do because I am about to go into university going into biomedicine but my heart just isnt there and now it's too late to go into the performing arts sector what do I do?

Im not really good at anything. My main interests include geography, psychedelics, and music. I feel like I gravitate towards those things. I had to drop out of college due to mental illness, which I recovered from, and that was a few years ago. Im now 23, and seriously looking for the right path. Im noy surr what it is though, so Im pretty lost. I just want some money and a bearable job so i can eat and sleep with a roof over my head.

I have enough credits for the AS degree but I haven’t graduated yet. I want to get a certificate for something like massages or masseuse sort of thing as well. I crack my friends backs all the time but I honestly don’t know what I’m doing and I try not to do too much bc of that lol but chiropractor seems like too much school ($$$$$) which I do not have. I’m also a friend who helps organize and clean others peoples spaces. So if anyone looking for something with my background....let me know. I want my own tiny house as well so maybe I can come work / live on site or nearby

Bending the paradigms. Communication is math formula specificity. SCIENCE stem careers care for the System and build a circle of life. All careers have some Scientific formulas applied . Preservationist demographers Engineers find the right fit. FORMULAS which match timing and experience.

The good news is that you can make your own career based on your passions. In terms of jobs, companies are more interested in your ability to critically think and your creativity than they are in which degree you earned. In terms of career, there is more focus on the health and future of the earth than ever before and it seems to be increasing everyday. This means that if it's your passion, you can make a greater impact now than was ever possible before. One thing to consider: Rather than doing everything yourself, inspire other to act. This will multiply the impact beyond your wildest dreams!
I am the same as you...I have an Honorary Natural Sciences degree that was mostly Environmental and Earth science modules...And i'm not that interested in the career options....If effects my willingness to even search for related jobs.
