Math sounds a bit broad, but the truth is we have dozens of senses beyond the basic 5, such as the sense of distance, weight, heat, balance, color, kinesthetic, chemo, gas, danger, etc. Most people refer to it as instinct, but they are in fact our hidden senses.
Mathematics is the sense you never knew you had - Eddie Woo 00:13 "I love mathematics" 00:55 "Born to be mathematicians" 03:32 "How to learn mathematics" 05:46 "Mathematics is a sense" 08:43 "..with time and the right guidance" Thanks Eddie.

I'm glad that he turned to maths. No doubt he would've been a great writer/English teacher. But in maths he has literally become a legend!
9:31 I actually teared up hearing this. I’ve always believed to be incapable of learning maths, I’ve always called myself a “none mathematic person”. I shall no longer limit myself with that belief.
I literally took mathematics as my optional subject in my High school even after being terrible at it, just to give it a try after watching this video! And in my term 1 result i scored 39/40 and wish to even study it further. You have changed so much of my life Eddie woo, it's crazy.
Wow, that's amazing! Way to go! Whatever you choose to do in life, your analytical skills will help a ton. Students like you are why Mr. Woo loves to teach!
Well in my case i did terrible and took humanities but after seeing this video I now started studying maths independently just for fun and now im confident to take admission in a data science course. Our mind is absolutely limitless.
What a captivating talk... never ever thought of maths the way Mr Woo percieved it!!! Right now I am feeling a deep sadness and regret knowing I missed my chances in life due to my bad mathematic teachers. The world needs more teachers like Mr Woo.

I have a fear of maths. My palms could create pools of sweat whenever I encounter numbers; be it in a classroom, a grocery store, in front of my computer, and just about everywhere. Now I'm in my first week of University taking engineering, and Calculus intimidates me an awful lot, more so that I have little to no background knowledge left on areas that are needed for me to understand it. And as much as I think deeply of other fields I could excel at, I want to believe that I can stop my palms from sweating over the very things I always ran away from. Thank you for this Ted Talk, Mr. Woo!
I started to love Math after i got out of School. For some reason, my Math teachers were just horrible, they made me hate Math to the core. But, on TH-cam, i would see random videos about Math, Science, Physics, and then, i began to wonder how does this work, how does that work, why does it work, etc.., and those questions all lead to Mathematics. It turns out, without Math, we would be living in the stone age. And then, i began to love Math, i saw what some of the Equations mean, where they come from, i really love the Math channel 3Blue1Brown btw. I am now back to learning Math, on my own, and its so much fun when you understand why something is the way it is.
Same, man. I'm currently dropped out of college, looking for a job, while learning Math on my own in my free time. I found wonders from this subject which I didn't back in high school, where I even hated the way they teach it: all the same rigorous and boring memorizing.

I was given the opportunity to talk to Eddie at a conference and it truly was amazing meeting and talking to him. Always intrigued and engaged by his videos and speeches
Watching his videos, it's so easy to forget Eddie Woo didn't start out in maths. He approaches his classroom lectures with such enthusiasm, and brings that out in his students, that you'd think he'd been born for the job. But as he points out here, and as I've long maintained, maths isn't something that only some people can do. It's something that a lot of people have been scared away from, but the appreciation of the subject, the understanding of mathematical ideas beyond mere rote number crunching, is something anyone can learn.
If that talk was delivered spontaneously, unscripted, apart perhaps from some landmarks he intended to visit, then it is the most extraordinary delivery I have ever seen. I am a great fan of him on the net anyway but he is very special in his ability to engage people in his presentation. Absolutely brilliant Eddie!

Math is the language that connects us with our Universal Creator. Every number, formula, theorem, etc. is the vocabulary and grammar point of such language.
I hate it when people see maths as a school subject, and when they fail, they hate it. It's an awesome tool for almost every kind of purpose, mostly that you don't know you would use.
When I was a 6th grader, we had a wonderful teacher of Math. I don't remember whether he sat on a chair during his lessons, because he was always engaged explaining us how to do sums, and he did it very interestingly. He was always full of positiv energy. Unfortunately, he got sick and he died. I've never met such kind of brilliant teacher. But Eddie reminded me about my great teacher.

Because that's make you lazy, day dreaming, not being committed to learn a tonne of new concepts and mathematical problems and cover a syllabus timely to practice and excel magnificently from a true hard work and responsibility That you will later truly find math a good view of this world JUST LIKE HIM
I've followed and watched his classroom math vids for many years now, and I'm happy for Eddie Woo. The audience loved him. TH-camrs loved his speech. I loved it, too. It was just superb and inspiring and very articulate and eloquent in ways with all the references to math being a sense, comparative geometry, and his overall enthusiasm is genuine.
I think Eddie really has encompassed the true beauty of mathematics in this talk. The patterns, relationships and connections that will slowly form overtime, will show you as you progress just how far you have came, and also just how tiny of a taste you have received of an amazing new world. I think that sense of knowing so much yet so little of the vast connections of mathematics has made me enjoy it more than ever, I think of maths not as a chore now, but more of an adventure into a vast new world. The most recent moment I felt this was when I finally learned the all-encompassing generalised stoke's theorem, which showed me just how connected my entire journey through calculus was, it showed me that those little skills I learned earlier just embodied small examples of bigger skills that I learned later. For me, as someone who failed Maths in High School, perseverance was key to showing me what I missed in the beautiful universe of Mathematics.
I watched edde woo videos and did seminar in Msc 1st semester and got appreciation from my lecturer.. This man completely changed my view on Mathematics. Thank you so much legend. Keep inspiring us. Love and respect from India.

Extremely agree with Eddie. It's a beautiful 4 years of independent journey in mathematics for me. 4 years ago, I came to realize that math is a set of beautiful concepts, patterns and ideas. And I never stop learning, doing and applying math in my daily life since then, while my current reality is that I am a civil engineer. Someday, I want to get into a community of creative mathematicians.
Hi EDDY I APPRECIATE the way you teach. My father was a teacher in high school and I somehow had an affection with maths. Although I achieved my graduation in engineering in electronics, I always tried to see how maths can be applied to any aspect in life. My father always taught me see the patterns which I appreciate when you speak. I agree you you saying “ I love Mathematics”. Maths is my being
So true, just like a sense of humor and a sense of rhythm, a "sense" of mathematics can only develop if we are patient enough to practice it until it's second-hand nature to us. Thankyou Eddie!
I could really relate to this guy. I was pressured to study and practice various things as I was a child, and that only made me hate them. Math sounds a bit broad, but the truth is we have dozens of senses beyond the basic 5, such as the sense of distance, weight, heat, balance, color, kinesthetic, chemo, gas, danger, etc.
Most people refer to it as instinct, but they are in fact our hidden senses.

I've never heard someone talk so beautifully about mathematics, let alone compare it to art. Loved it.

That's basically how I wound up here :)
Try Zach Star. He makes similar content but expands beyond the math by showing how the math shows up in other fields.

No words to describe Eddie apart from brilliant in his work and communication. The best TED talk I've seen.

Teacher like him is one-of-a-kind, irreplaceable.
