    Some big differences between Undertow and Aenima is that Maynard really evolved as a frontman. He uses his less aggressive registers and begins exploring more range in his voice in terms of pitch and intensity; he also begins to write from a more metaphorical and philosophical content. Another difference is Danny's drumming. He's much more forward and musical, opening a wider space by incorporating his electronics, adding different sounds, rhythms, and textures. Adam's guitar playing is still exploring material that the band had largely already written before and during Undertow, and Justin presence is only beginning to be felt as he joined halfway through recording the album, for Paul D'Amore had already written and recorded the basslines for some songs like Stinkfist, Eulogy, H, and Pushit. On Lateralus is where we really feel Justin's presence and a leap in Adam's guitar playing.

    One of my favorite Tool concert moments comes from the last time I saw them (philly 2019) they closed with Stinkfist and watching the whole nosebleed section sing “I’ll keep digging, until I feel something” like they were all on stage, will be something I remember forever.

    • @midnight51

      I was there and reciting with a raised fist, totally consumed and intent on feeling something. This moment was also the highlight of the concert for me as well. Cheers.

    It totally doesn't matter if you have come across this song before. Reactions are a lot about context. You are hearing this song within the context of your journey, as you focus on the evolution of the band. Many times, we hear a song and don't absorb it until we've heard it many times over. Unless you have absorbed any song - especially a Tool song - your reactions remain pristine and valuable to us who enjoy watching your journey.

    I saw them in concert this past November on their Fear Inoculum Tour and cellphones were not allowed. Stinkfist was the last song and Maynard allowed everyone to pull their phones out and get their Fix !

    I've been lucky enough to see them in concert 6 times. Lately at least, they seem to finish all their setlists with Stinkfist. I believe it's because it becomes more and more relevant (our becoming increasingly desensitized) with every passing day.

  • @blankpage111

    Keep in mind that starting Aenima TOOL had joined Justin Chancellor - their permanent bass guitarist. Paul D'Amor had left the band because he wanted to play a guitar.
    Also Danny's drum sketches have gotten more complex and more up in front. The bass in this album alot more agressive and solid. It fits this album's concept perfectly as well as Maynard's voice. And of course Adam brought completely new ideas into this record.

    Great video once again. I enjoy that your respective analyses are as intelligent as the music is. I've wondered from the start if you both were in the psychology field in some way. One of the things i love about TOOL is that the lyrics could be interpreted in so many ways. But its the music that really moves me. TOOL is amazing at the musical climax and building you up for it. Seamless transitions in different time signatures keep your brain on the edge of its seat. I still get goosebumps when listening to certain songs even though ive heard them a million times. I think Maynards maturity and the addition of Justin before this album is what made the difference between this and Undertow. According to members of the band, they weren't really serious about being TOOL until Undertow actually came out. You'll see the morph on this album. Can't wait for the next video!

    OK first of all, this album picks up where the last album leaves off. The last album ends with waking up in a ditch after the flood of truth. Sort of like you were saying, about seeing things from a new perspective. He’s now noticing how the external stimuli is affecting him psychologically. This is their most psychological album. In my opinion it’s their best album, also their most creative. Some songs you will not see the psychological aspect on your first listen. I will try to point you in the right direction. I never tell you what the song is about, I only try to point you. Figuring it out for yourself is the fun part. I enjoy your reactions, can’t wait for the next one.

    There’s a lot of layers to the song but I’ve always took it to be about “the pursuit of the meaning of life” Each revelation feels like it’s not enough that there must be more to it. Each spiritual plateau once felt euphoric but now feels hollow or banal. In a way the pursuit numbs you to the meaning and experience of life.

  • @deadohiosky1701
    @deadohiosky1701 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I feel it's about how we become desensitized to things, and so we need more of it to feel something. The more we get, the more we need. Before long, we need something fairly extreme to have any sensation beyond boredom. Fisting as a sexual activity is a methaphor...first the finger, but you get used to that and eventually need the entire hand, then elbow, and so on. It's a lament that we can't be satisfied by simple, subtle things in our modern society that constantly overwhelms the senses.

  • @Trepanation21
    @Trepanation21 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The title and "surface" themes of the song - fisting - are all related to the metaphorical intention of the song, right? The song broadly describes the feeling of desensitization and overstimulation, extremes (hence the "fisting" joke). Whether that desensitization/stimulation relates to addiction tolerances, or maybe it relates to love, passion [and the death thereof], being bored with one's life's direction or that they're distracted (overstimulation) by everything else, and thus feeling unfulfilled, so on and so forth. The extreme act of "fisting", pain and pleasure of it, the filling up or feeling full (satisfied), the sexual buildup to that - "finger deep within the borderline", which then goes on to become "knuckle deep within the borderline", and then onto "elbow" and the comical "shoulder". Is it extreme fisting, or is it transformation? Perhaps it's passing into something new if you envision a doorway and the unknown. You first push your fingertip through the doorway to test... then more, and more. The knuckle, safe. The elbow, safe. The shoulder? We are passing through, now. The idea of pushing oneself to some kind of extreme or expectation, comfort through discomfort, and other allusions therein are all aspects of personal growth and exploration or boundaries, while the "fisting"/Stinkfist is merely the "joke" surface/caricature/façade/mask that Tool often uses superficially to troll on the media and radio stations at the time (radio stations and MTV notoriously referred to Stinkfist as "Track #1") while they explore and connect with the related metaphors and humanity beneath. They often employ an obvious and superficial but related theme, belying a deeper or more esoteric intent and connection. This is also why Tool Fans Are Notoriously Pretentious™ - Because they've spent a lot of time with the music and feel connected to the incredible layers beneath the skin, which makes the surface stuff that much more amusing to share. See: Die Eire Von Satan, Disgustipated, etc. They goof around with presentation a lot.
    "Relax, turn around and take my hand": Trust me, take my hand we walk together? Or relax your body in order to be fully fisted. Lol. See?
    The funny part is that the Fisting (extreme/deep penetration) is... *merely the surface.*

  • @davideldridge9021
    @davideldridge9021 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I see this song as a metaphor for a relationship that has become stale and the need to push the boundaries to find new pleasure and connection to grow.

    So excited that you're starting my favorite album! Excellent video as always! The way I've always interpreted the song, but this is just my opinion of course, is that the name of the sexual act is being used as a metaphor for desensitization and the need for more, whether wanted or not. For instance, anything we as humans do that is an adrenaline rush, be it something good that we enjoy, like having sex, or to some, doing drugs, or even something that was bad and not good for us, like smoking or drinking too much, that we will always fight ourselves and our human nature to not want more and more and to not do it again. But at times, we crave that feeling or fix again, and each time we fall victim to let it happen or do it again, the next time we do it, we'll be even more numb to that sensation, so we push farther and farther past the borderline of what we expected would be our stopping point, just to chase that feeling. We even know we shouldn't be doing it, and know that each time we push farther because of how numb we've become to it and that lack of self control, that it could even reach unhealthy or dangerous levels. Yet sadly, we still may refuse to stop or even ask for help because that addiction to feel something again no matter what you have to do to achieve it can be powerful, even if it is absolutely something that we know we don't need, but can't stop wanting. But having said that, I hope that everyone knows that just because we all may have different interpretations of this song, or any song, that none of those interpretations are wrong, because as long as we each found meaning, purpose or inspiration from the lyrics and the song, then all of our opinions are correct, because the artist(s) achieved exactly what they hoped for, that we all find meaning in their words that are special to us all, and there is no band better at doing that than Tool!

    The perspective I always had was this was a commentary on the larger society in that people have grown comfortable with and have accepted greater levels of horror and terrifying behavior. We have become numb to all the external stimuli and now we need greater levels of violence, intensity, drugs, etc. to feel anything anymore.

    I actually took the massive risk of using this song as the soundtrack for a dream sequence video I made for a project. Thankfully no one asked about the metaphor of the song and I wound up getting an A + 5 grade for the video. Using the stink fist metaphor is Maynard's way of expressing the extremes of modern needs for excess.

    Justin Chancellor took over bass on this album, and the band overall took a much more progressive approach from this album forward. Danny Carey takes his drumming to new levels with his polyrhythms, and overall the songs became even more complex in their time signatures and rhythms. This album is really where the genre of Tool was brought into focus, and fully differentiated them from everyone else.

    i think this song is about desensitization and that we need more and more cause we getting over stimulated ; "Boredom's not a burden Anyone should bear Constant over stimulation numbs me" "It's not enough I need more Nothing seems to satisfy I don't want it I just need it To breathe, to feel, to know I'm alive" "The way that things have come to be Desensitized to everything What became of subtlety? How can it mean anything to me If I really don't feel anything at all? I'll keep digging till I feel something"

    With this song the sexual connotations are undeniable. For me it is about desensitization of experiences over time. One must go farther and farther into an activity. For instance, drug use. One must take more and more. Chase the dragon so to speak. BASE jumping can be another example. Start with hopping off a curb and eventually one needs to jump off a bridge or antenna to reach that adrenaline rush. A great song.

    • @Jay.McCarty
      @Jay.McCarty 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you've very close but I would add that, IMO, the desensitization comes from the, admittedly early at the time, ready availability of pornography on the internet. IMO, "I'll keep digging until I feel something" refers to endlessly searching for something that will get you aroused because you have already seen everything.

    I think undertow was a very angry album, and the music was more aggressive as well. Ænema seemed like he had eaten some mushrooms and was finding more positive and introspective aspects to life. The music became more melodic as well. They all evolved. Then Lateralus hit and it was like pure beauty and light. That’s like a 5 gram trip right there lol. 10,000 days was like a DMT trip. And now Fear Innoculum is just no drug trip at all, it them evolved to a different plain of existence. They’re not physical beings anymore. They’re extra dimensional beings and live in the spaces between the notes. Lol

    Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't introduce a new tool listener to Opiate or Undertow albums right off the bat. It may leave a bad taste in their mouth unless they are open minded. AEnima on to present is pretty digestible (maybe even Laturalus on in even). To be fair, she has been very open minded throughout it.

    You guys listened to the wrong version. This song is over 8 minutes long. You missed a very significant part of this song.
    I see all these pretentious fools trying to be philosophical about Tool and didn't even realize that the song was missing half of itself?

      It's ok, no offense taken, although I can assure you that both my hair and glasses are real :) (with -2.5 myopia on both eyes, I feel completely blind without them)

    18:33. In couple of dozens of minutes...That’s hilarious, cuz as a USA native, I hate the fact that we do not have the metric system. Then, there you go in country with forward thinking objectives, putting dozens out there as a unit of measurement. So, obviously you are an old head, still, it was hilarious to me.
