Look forward to inspiring youngsters to become part of the Public Policy Ecosystem via GGI's Policy Scholars Program - along with innumerable partnered organizations (such as BCG, Clinton Health Access Initiative etc) working closely with political and business leaders.

Hi Naman, thanks for such an informative podcast. I'm a bit late, but I'd still be very fortunate to find this channel.
I'm a Pakistani-born individual living in Cambridge, UK, and a student of politics at the age of 39. My aspiration is also like Priyanka's to be a tiny part of Development, Diplomacy, or Advocacy in civil service in the UK or become a part of the UN development program to help indigenous communities around the world. I feel more confident that I can resonate with people like you both.

In the last few days, I have seen many comments - where many of you enquired about the "Salaries" in the Indian Foreign Services.
Here's my response to that question :
All civil servants who come through the UPSC exam start at the same level of salary - level 10 ie. the starting basic salary ie. ₹ 56100. For the next three promotions (levels 11, 12 & 13), IFS and IAS get 2 extra increments (6%).
However, when posted abroad IFS officers get Foreign Allowance (FA) in lieu of Dearness Allowance (DA) which other home-based civil servants get. But the important point to note is that the FA is considerably larger than the DA.
While DA is not dependent on the place of posting, FA is country-specific. This means that the FA of an IFS officer may actually decrease when she/he is posted to Islamabad vs. Belgrade Vs. New York City is at the same rank.
On a totally related note -
    1. I will respond to all your concerns/questions/doubts on TH-cam itself. I'm loving the UI/UX of the platform - so please do not hesitate to comment with your doubts on any of my posted videos. I will respond to ALL comments.
    2. This is an extremely important video on analyzing careers in the Multilateral Organization. There are many other ways to contribute to the nation's growth - UPSC civil services is one of the many options available. I'm fairly certain, you all will gain immense value from the video - so please watch the entire video in one go. And do let me know your thoughts as well.
Do let me know your thoughts on the Podcasts so far. :)

MBA colleges and pvt companies care about your school marks and undergrad degree.. there's nothing wrong with that. Both these things have been in your control and it was upto you to do well in them. What is not in our control is the caste we're born in. And this exam cares A LOT about that.

      @namanshrivastava  ปีที่แล้ว +3

Hi Aditi, you are correct about various aspects. I do sit on the board of one of the schools in the US. Allow me to assure you that MBA schools do NOT care about your marks in schools. They do are about how competitive your undergrad program is (could be solved for via various standardized test scores).

eye opening conversation sir! i graduated from IIT roorkee in 2021 and have been preparing for civil services ever since. listening to some sane advices, i feel adversed to make state services as plan B [also defense services is out of option due to age :( ]. the public policy path seems a very apt alternative to me.
though , i had a few doubts wrt this, which i hope you could briefly touch upon .
    1. is it possible for someone with my credentials ( no work experience , internships in industrial engineering, volunteering experience in rural development) to land up in SIPA/ fletcher/ HKS/ yale jackson by mere GRE score and average LOR?
    2. does GGI help with securing admissions in the above mentioned institutions?
    3. is a PhD in social sciences/policy/economics/IR a competitive alternative to civil services ?
and thankyou very much for bringing out this wonderful and life saving content out there. nothing can change ones life more than a right mentor at the right time 🙏

    • @namanshrivastava
      @namanshrivastava  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1) No. Even if you get in you will not benefit for 3 reasons: 1. Your chances of scholarships are minimal. 2. You will find it extremely hard to get a job in the US. 3. You will not be able to contribute much in the classrooms with no work ex.
2_ Yes and No. We will not write applications for you. At GGI goal is to help people figure out great jobs without formal credentializations. We are cognizant of the fact of how expensive these degrees are - and in many cases, the curriculum isn't updated. However, GGI has a formal partnership with Fletcher and is developing one with Wharton and Tuck School of Business. As of now, Fletcher provides a guaranteed $20,000 scholarship to GGI-Fletcher Graduates (if shortlisted). Additionally, GGI Impact Fellowship is counted as a work experience - where you do get a chance to replicate a real work policy consulting experience. Such experience could further improve your profile.
      3. Yes. A very good friend of mine - Dhiraj was an OSD in Niti Aayog (at a rank equivalent to that of Joint Secretary). He wasn't a civil servant (rather a had a PhD in economics from Cambridge).
Regardless of your decisions. I wish you all the very best! :)

It’s my 6 month of preparation and I’ve learned so much that now I wouldn’t settle anything less than joining IFS.
When I first read the title, first think that came to my mind was that why so much proud of joining most useless org in the world write now, nobody take it seriously including USA(ex:chemical bombs by us in Vietnam and no action was taken against it), then how would other countries like Russia, china will take it seriously. Only good thing UN has that is big hall where every country has a seat to speak and blame each other. I don't know if you are aware or not but UPSC is one of many career ruining exams that happen in India, UPSC is still fine cos at the end of the journey you either get your goal or u get Insane amount of social science knowledge.
let's talk about CA, I have seen and I know so many who have spend 7-10 years ( 6 years assumed normal) in CA giving attempts, learning things which may go totally useless ( thanks to Al) and still slogging in for same degree. CA has passing percentage in single digits 5-8percent in Final level.
The most miserable combination is - Lowr middle class family+ Avg brain+ Family Issues+ no money to even pay for govt colleges - all this together weave a tightly knit web 🕸️ which engulfs you. No matter how hard you try to break, it wouldn't break. It will keep sucking life out of you.

Hi Naman sir ,Thanks for such a wonderful podcast ,i feel really lucky to have found this , i come from a very remote area in Bihar ,where it is said that most of the UPSC aspirants come from ,i believe one of the reason is that we are not aware of other career opportunities where one can earn respect ,though things are changing but for only very few .Most of us come from lower middle class background but we have very big dreams ,but all we can do is hard work & many of us do not get proper guidance while choosing our career path .
I myself have studied Chinese Language from JNU for 5 years ,have a master's degree but i feel it's just on paper,it's all i have ,but I do not have any practical knowledge of it .I worked in corporate sector but i was not satisfied there .Now i feel lost as I do not know what skills should I learn to make a space for myself in this competitive world .As a kid I wanted to work for the development of society around me or at a larger level but i had no idea how i can do that .Now all i wish is to get some right guidance in my late 20s.Kindly guide if possible .

The wholesome response/reason for me preparing UPSC is
1: grow in life want to face competition
2: want to uplift my people(community)/state
3: want to challenge my vision
Will try for 2-3 attempts seriously,I know the fact 99% fail exam but for my vision UPSC can bypass

I have been preparing for upsc since 2018, and I'm still struggling. I'm at the lowest phase of my life where I don't have work experience and am now struggling to find a job for myself as I can't keep toiling my sanity without a backup. I'm going to be 27, and I'm extremely sad that my upsc decision has failed me miserably. At the moment, all I have is a PG degree with a net in social work. I have applied for a PhD. as well, but I'm still passionate about upsc, but I'm extremely skeptical about sitting through this excruciating process called upsc without a backup plan, so kindly help me to come out of this mess sir 🙏

Kindly help me clarify my query. Thanks in advance.

    • @namanshrivastava

Yes - the pay scale depends on what you bring to the table. I'm currently advising a few governments in Eastern Europe and my salary is equivalent to that of a partner in BCG/McKinseyey in a similar Geography.
At the same time, there are early entrants who might make less than what an intern might make in the MBBs.
