I got my first AR15 earlier today. I haven't fired it yet. I've been using dummy rounds to learn about it The dummy loads have really helped me practice to load and learn how to clear jams. I'm getting much better at learning not to accidentally ride the charging handle forward on release, causing all my jams in the first place :)
Bonus: I couldn't find chapstick and I didn't want to dig in my wife's makeup kit (she doesn't go through my range bag, fair is fair) but I found the lid from one of my kid's Crayola marker fit perfectly in my upper.

Good training. Thank you. An old Army competition shooter taught me to dry fire practice when I was 14 or 15 back in the 70s it works. Your channel has given me even more ideas. Thank you. Yes, I actually do train once or twice a week and am currently setting up a “jungle walk”. I’m trying to figure out size appearance for 100/200 yards etc so I can do longer range estimation during practice. Thank you again.

Dry firing my pistol improved my confidence leaps and bounds and I was making faster and better shots then I ever have before. I even made my own cadence for drills that made me faster. Good stuff
I was stuck with a 92% standing average in US Service Rifle Competition. I got a tip from a USAMU Service Rifle shooter, a 50 minute exercise at 100 or 200 yards: dry fire, call shot and plot call in data book's target. Next, live fire, call shot and plot call in data book's target; but, do not spot/mark bullet strike. Repeat this dry/live fire exercise 40 times. Then, look at target and mark the 20 strikes in data book's target. Now, look at divergence of call and strike placement. If there's a consistent corollary adjust the sight to cause calls and strikes to intersect at next practice. After about 15 days of this practice once a day, you can expect a highly refined no wind zero, increased stamina, shot call confidence, and the ability to build a position which can be quickly adjusted for natural point of aim. For me, the exercise improved my standing score to an average of 96%, which helped me earn my US Distinguished Rifleman Badge.

I bought my teen a P365 BB gun, so he could get used to the pistol I will be giving him, one day. It functions like the real one, so it was a good idea. What I didn’t expect was how much it helped me, when ammo was scarce. I was able to keep my draw time down, and even better my tac-reload times. Ended up being able to teach the tac reload drill to my kid as well. Just a thought for when looking to add fun, to dryfire.
I have a HellBoy BB rifle. Same principle. CO2 Trigger reset, no projectile. Safe "dry-fire". I also use M&P 40 BB replica, one that has a reciprocating slide. Same, Same. Fits my holsters, same feel as my real M&P, AND the slide moves to simulate recoil. Great training, indoors, and can use the BB's in the back yard for accuracy training. Now THAT'S the way we roll here in Kentucky.
I've been using a plastic rifle flag to hold my M4 out of battery. (Had a buddy's chap-stick burst after repeated use) It has the added bonus of keeping your rifle visibly cleared to onlookers.
Also, just got a .177 BB gun Glock 19 non blowback with 15 cans of co2 and 6000 BBs for $125 at Big 5. Really not bad, they were running out. But perfect to practice in the backyard
Put 500 rounds of 9mm down range this week. Decided to test out my 9mm AR pistol build. It was a great time but the cost to replace the ammo shot this week isn't making me happy 😳. Double the cost per round now. As always, Great video! Plus I also have to say, keep up the great work working out. Lockdown doesnt allow one to buy much. So im going to try the paper to keep glock out of bat to practice ( Its a awesome idea ). Alternatively I use an Airsoft Pistol.
The CMMG .22 converter is a decent practice option for close range practice. I was previously using it at an old pistol range that didn't have a backstop that could handle FMJ rifle ammo. The zero is about the same as .223/5.56 at 25 yards and shorter. I'm bummed to be using it again to conserve the good ammo. Yes it's dirtier than rifle ammo, although not nearly as dirty as using a suppressor.
You can also buy BB guns that are very very nice replicas like the SIG p226. Same weight same size same everything. It shoots pretty accurate too and has a picattinny rail under the barrel so you can slap a laser underneath also. Uses Co2 blowback action that has a little kick.
I bought the SIRT bolt for AR a couple of years ago. After a short time the thing broke. The little button that fires the laser stopped moving/got stuck open. Sent it back to them to be fixed, they sent it back to me, said it was fixed but it wasn't no change at all, you put the battery in and the laser comes on and stays on. MantisX is about to come out with a magazine that resets the AR trigger and fires a laser. I would wait for that and skip the SIRT.
I think what you're talking about is called the Black Beard, from their site, just pre-ordered mine today. To be honest I came down here to grip about how I should have bought the SIRT bolt but you've renewed my confidence in the purchase.

You get a real trigger pull with your true trigger break, whilst on the SIRT your trigger just pushes a rod up to a button (which might break) and is mushy.
Karl, I recently got the Mantis Blackbeard trigger resetting system for AR platforms. You can get it with or without a laser. Since I already have both a SIRT and a SIRT AR STIC (the new carbine adapter for the SIRT pistol), I got the one without the laser (it's a bit less expensive than the one with the laser). I also have the DryFireMag for my G19, so thanks to the markets (hooray for capitalism!), it's nice to be able to have dry fire products for both carbine and pistol with and without a laser without having to do a bunch of work. So my dry fire gear -- SIRT pistol and SIRT AR STIC for laser dry fire; Sig M400 with Mantis Blackbeard (no laser) and G19 with DryFireMag for no-laser dry fire.
Thanks for this vid and what you do. Big fan of CoolFire and LASR to track hits. I’ve also invested in the forthcoming Blackbeard resetting AR trigger - it’ll have an IR laser like my CoolFire so I can use it with LASR, and the system resets your actual AR trigger so the pull is correct and the safety works as normal. While I wait I’ll try the chapstick trick, what I’ve been doing is just pulling to the trigger wall, and using any breaks as a mag change drill where I pull the dummy round mag, charge and reset safety, and insert the mag again or one on my belt also with dummy rounds. I tried the SIRT AR bolt and was apparently sent a defective one. I try to dry fire every single non live fire day.
I really like the Glock trigger from the Glock store since it resets like a real Glock trigger, it's not cheap but it's worth it. The only thing is you need a spare Glock to set it up in since it's not so quick to drop in and out of since the striker is removed to use it and put their's in. The advantage is though you can get an exact training pistol of what you carry.

Fast-eye training: play billiards! Watch cue tip position during the critical 1/10 second action/response cycle -- if the cue 'arcs' (bends) during stroke (and misses) then point-of-sight alignment was initially wrong, review data from dominant eye 😉
I'd bet tactical edge has licensed KE arms patent on the trigger. I have a KE SLT trigger and it uses the same tech. You can put the weapon on safe without first charging a round. And you get a audible click when the saftey is in the fire position and not loaded. They call it Sear Link. And essentially has no disconector. They are sweet triggers
There are some blowback airsoft pistols you can use as well, but they tend to cost as more than the other options listed in the video, and you still need to make sure said thing is made to the same dimensions as the real thing.
Dude! I never thought of running the Dry Fire (TV) video with carbine. DUH, Homer Simpson on my part! Very good suggestion. We don't shoot our Rogers Range with 5.56 -- we have the thicker 8" targets in the conex, but i have never have seen them installed. SWAT (who does the training on our Rogers Range) does shoot it with 9mm PCCs . :)
Thank you very much for this great information. There are 9mm dry fire laser systems for around $39 on Amazon like G-Sight and Pink Rhino that you can use in conjunction with G-Sight’s app ($4.99 to unlock unlimited shooting) which let you use your phone’s camera to watch any target and register where you hit. I’ve only been using it for a week but it has helped me get much better aiming with my carry pistol. I would recommend buying a cheap 51” tripod to hold your phone (about another $15).

Been doing this forever before covid. Out of necessity for lack of funds! So Laserlyte + cheap free target tracking program + laptop w cam. Then go to range once a week to validate. My target acquisition, draw speed, transition improve dramatically. The laser n laptop Even able to do quick draw competition w two people! Can’t practice hammer drills, recoil management, malfunction etc. However, first round hit through eye socket.... :-)
Carl/Karl(sp?) you are a heart-and-soul instructor and it is so apparent that you are not hesitant to give "pearls" to your students or followers, an often rare instructor attribute. Mantis makes a bolt that’s electronic with a laser and a mag that has the battery to run the laser and bolt and it also resets the trigger so you can dry fire with whatever trigger you use. I want one bad I think they are a couple hundred bucks. I don’t know if they work with the training targets made by laser lite but one of these days I’m gonna find out even if I have to buy them myself

You can also use expended brass to create malfuntions. Load em up mixed in with your live rounds.

I do it when watching T.V.. Just pick out a Person in the show. every time they pop up that's your GO signal. see how fast you can get on target.

Watch cue tip position during the critical 1/10 second action/response cycle -- if the cue 'arcs' (bends) during stroke (and misses) then point-of-sight alignment was initially wrong, review data from dominant eye 😉

I'd bet tactical edge has licensed KE arms patent on the trigger. I have a KE SLT trigger and it uses the same tech. You can put the weapon on safe without first charging a round. And you get a audible click when the saftey is in the fire position and not loaded. They call it Sear Link. And essentially has no disconector. They are sweet triggers
When I served in the army we used to use quarters in magazines to prevent bolt lock back when doing some drills.

There are some blowback airsoft pistols you can use as well, but they tend to cost as more than the other options listed in the video, and you still need to make sure said thing is made to the same dimensions as the real thing.

Dude! I never thought of running the Dry Fire (TV) video with carbine. DUH, Homer Simpson on my part! Very good suggestion. We don't shoot our Rogers Range with 5.56 -- we have the thicker 8" targets in the conex, but i have never have seen them installed. SWAT (who does the training on our Rogers Range) does shoot it with 9mm PCCs . :)

There are 9mm dry fire laser systems for around $39 on Amazon like G-Sight and Pink Rhino that you can use in conjunction with G-Sight’s app ($4.99 to unlock unlimited shooting) which let you use your phone’s camera to watch any target and register where you hit. I’ve only been using it for a week but it has helped me get much better aiming with my carry pistol. I would recommend buying a cheap 51” tripod to hold your phone (about another $15).
Those AR triggers are really awesome. It's actually the SLT-1 from KE Arms. I didn't know M&M let other companies put their name on them.

So Laserlyte + cheap free target tracking program + laptop w cam. Then go to range once a week to validate. My target acquisition, draw speed, transition improve dramatically. The laser n laptop Even able to do quick draw competition w two people!
Can’t practice hammer drills, recoil management, malfunction etc.
However, first round hit through eye socket.... :-)
Carl/Karl(sp?) you are a heart-and-soul instructor and it is so apparent that you are not hesitant to give "pearls" to your students or followers, an often rare instructor attribute. Your videos and your "delivery" make so much "sense" of the subject-matter you are teaching and the real-world experience you have adds a measure of realism and practicality. In the army we did a lot of dime and washer drills
I couldn't fit a chapstick into my lower. Maybe that only works for AR-10s? I ended up using the cap from a Sharpie and works great. Thanks for the tip.

Mantis makes a bolt that’s electronic with a laser and a mag that has the battery to run the laser and bolt and it also resets the trigger so you can dry fire with whatever trigger you use. I want one bad I think they are a couple hundred bucks. I don’t know if they work with the training targets made by laser lite but one of these days I’m gonna find out even if I have to buy them myself
