And yes, the concept of 'just unboxing quick impressions, no reviews' on Short Circuit is lost on him. Which isn't a bad thing, to be honest :P.
I also have a feeling with all the car reviews - where Alex is really into it - is done party as a service to the hosts/writers, but also to make Short Circuit into more of a review channel for non-computer-tech. But that's just my hunch.

Lol... I don't normally watch ShortCircuit, but Riley referred to this video after he reviewed a Lectric bike. Well I can't say much about NIU Scooters because it's max weight is a mere 264lbs and the biggest joke here is there is no way to chain the thing up. They give a locking mode, but so what. It's so light (40lbs), the thief could simply walk away with it and it's not like the faint beeping would attract much attention. My scooter is the Arwibon Q30 a single rear 48v, 2500W motor electric scooter which weighs in at 78lbs. Not easily carried away. It has a max user weight of 200Kg (440lbs) and even at max weight it can still do 25° - 30° grades.
Oh and FYI... as of July 21, 2021 Vancouver allows eScooters, but they follow the eBike specifications, no higher than 500W and they limit speeds to 24kph and must wear a helmet and have lights if riding between sunset and sun rise. This video was release July 10, 2021 - so just 11 days too early. Here in Toronto, eScooters also follow the eBike laws. So my 2500W badboy could be considered illegal, especially if I'm caught doing 60+ Kph lol... vancouver.ca/streets-transportation/electric-kick-scooters.aspx

    Hi ShortCircuiters and NIU fans,
We appreciate the feedback, both positive and critical. We have been making e-mopeds for years and the smart app is a key feature for many of our riders. The version of the NIU app that supports the KQi3 is still in beta, so we will continue to improve the experience for our users.
The reason we require the app to unlock the full speed and performance of the scooter is to ensure the safety of new users who may be unfamiliar with e-scooters. We want to make sure they complete the tutorial before they go out on the road with no experience or familiarity with the functions of the scooter. We also have the utmost respect for your data privacy; the app data connections are to ensure the functions of the scooter and app work properly together for ride stats.
Just as with the app, the KQi3 featured in the video is an early version and may differ from the final product. We will continue to improve based on our user feedback, as always. Thank you!

Why is there an online requirement at all? Nothing about what you just said couldn't be handled entirely locally on the owner's device. Nor does it seem to compensate for how intrusive and prone to failure a mandatory phone connection is. If your phone runs out of battery when you're out, that should not jeopardise your ability to get home. And that's not even addressing the security risks that come with having a vehicle thats core functionality can be accessed via Blutooth.
Stick to user manuals, leave risk assessment up to the owner and enforcement of safe driving practice up to law enforcement. Once you've sold it, it's not yours anymore and you have no right to retain control over it.

@@LordSoulSicarious Hi Sean. To clarify, the scooter still operates normally without a connection to the phone. There is no need for an "always on" connection, except to provide detailed ride statistics through the app. The app is needed to complete the new user tutorial, but other than that, it's only necessary for the smart features like locking, ride stats, and custom riding mode.

With most electric scooters, you only need the app to unlock speeds, set cruise levels, etc. You don't need to use it every time. That said, my scooter (the Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost) doesn't have a feature in the app to lock it to prevent (or at least discourage) theft, and I REALLY wish it did. On mine, I managed to get creative with a Kryptonite lock at the fold point, with a chain wrapped around it multiple times, for locking it up.
For heavier riders, beware the low weight limits on many electric scooters. On this one and most of them, the limit is 220 pounds. The Swagger's limit is 320 pounds , which is one of the highest I've found for a low price ($300) scooter.

Same sort of restriction where I live in Ontario. It's the main reason why I've never bothered to get an electric bike, board, or scooter. I can live with the up-front cost, but fully automated electric devices like this are heavily restricted in where you can use it, and those that only offer assist, I don't have much use for.
They're basically treated like vehicles (that you don't need a license to drive), which I guess they sort of are, as regular bikes technically are as well and you can in fact ride those on the road, but I wouldn't feel all that safe trying to use these sorts of vehicles on the road among cars (and I'm super sure I'd be popular if I did /s), and if the sidewalk is a non-option (at least legally), I just feel like giving up on the venture entirely.
Also, basically forcing us to use them on the road like cars while at the same time the government forces artificial speed limits on them is just asinine. "You can basically only use these on the roads among the cars, but we sure won't let you use them at speeds that make sense under those circumstances." Either they should let us use them at full speed or let us use them on sidewalks. Preferably both.
