    You HAVE to listen to the version from when Eric was in derek and The Dominos, including the piano outro. Classic

  • @alphajava761
    @alphajava761 2 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    Duane Allman wrote the riff for this song and plays dual lead guitar with Clapton on the studio track, Allman plays the slide guitar parts as well. The guitar has a Southern Rock flavor, that's Allman's contribution.

      Doing Allman was a magnificent guitarist, probably the best southern rock guitarist of all time. He died way before his time and only the first couple albums of the Allman Brothers have his music. I suggest you do whipping post by the Allman Brothers if you haven't yet.

      Totally agree! This is a fine version to listen to if you are already familiar with the original version that includes the piano coda with Duane Allman's brilliant slide guitar work. This version pretty much mirrors the versions I've heard at Clapton shows.

      The original version or nothing else to be honest. Besides Duane Allman's slide guitar Clapton has never gotten closer to his blues heroes singing the blues then the studio version.

      It's an amazing story. Marrying your friend's ex (with whom you've also had an extramarital affair) and remaining friends until the day George died is just one reaon why we used to say "CLAPTON IS GOD" - Let's just say that I'm auld enough to hae seen the handbills posted on a wall in Glasgow Scotland when I was a wee laddie.

      Eric used to play it this way through the 70's, unfortunately. I think it might have had something to do with the writing credits going to Jim Gordon for the piano bridge, but it was actually composed by Rita Coolidge, his girlfriend at the time.

    The original song Eric recorded as Derek & the Dominoes on Layla & assorted love stories is the best version of "Layla". The whole album is amazing & should be owned by any music lover. Duane Allman plays slide guitar on the song, Clapton sought him out after hearing him play at a show. Please also listen to "Bell Bottom blues" after "Layla". Thx.

    Eric Clapton was singing about George Harrison of the Beatles' wife, who was British model, Patty Boyd. George and Eric were good friends at the time. They got divorced later and she married Eric. George & Eric made up years later and were friends again. The song was also inspired by a 7th century Arabic poem "Layla and Majnun" and Eric wanted to send a message to Patty to leave George. Note the lyrics: "I tried to give you consolation. When your old man had let you down". BTW this version is not the whole song, that's why it's short. lol!

    Eric Clapton has been known to play almost any genre of music: pop, rock, psychedelic, old standards, and country. But his favorites seem to be blues and reggae. And up until his time with Delaney and Bonnie he was very unsure of his singing.

  • @jimbessett2392
    @jimbessett2392 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This was okay but you really need to check out Derek and the Dominos version with Eric Clapton on lead guitar and vocals. The song is talking about Patty Boyd who was married to George Harrison of the Beatles. She and George were having problems and Eric came in and began a relationship with her and eventually she divorced George and married Eric, but later divorced him also.

    The 1970 LP was Derek and The Dominoes, Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs. Must check out Have you Ever Loved a Woman, Key to the Highway, Little Wing. This song was written for Patti Boyd who was married to Eric's best friend, George Harrison. I believe Have You Ever Loved a Woman was ALSO written about Patti. They later hooked up after she left George Harrison. Though they were both in love w/ the same woman, It never hurt their relationship. The musicians on the original LP album are phenominal, Bobby Witlock on keyboards, Duane Alleman on slide, Donald Duck Dunn on percussion, incredible album.

  • @oldmanghost219
    @oldmanghost219 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes. They are telling you about the original outro with the piano. It is a must. And Yes! Patti Boyd was married to George then she left him because of drugs and went to Eric then left him because of drugs. "Cocaine" is another song by him that was a major hit. Who would have thought? When George died it is Eric that did the singing for George's "My Guitar Gently Weeps' at the concert for George. A great version of that song.

    Yes, true story! George Harrison's wife Patty Boyd is Layla. It's said when she heard this song she knew it was written for her. Must listen to the original version from the album, "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" - Derek and the Dominos, the entire album is mind blowing. Eric Clapton, and Duane Allman, "Bell Bottom Blues", another great track, "Little Wing" Hendrix's song in tribute to Jimmy Hendrix, who died while recording this album, Duane Allman died one year later.

    Great live version there from the 2001 concert at the Staples Centre, first half at least, there's a great piano based outro too. The main riff is based on the beginning run of "As the Years Go Passing By" by Blues great Albert King "There is nothing I can do if you leave me here to cry" sped up.
    Layla = Patti Boyd, then wife of Beatle George Harrison was a major Rock n' Roll love triangle, and was based on the story of a Persian booking Eric was given called Layla and Majnun. The rest is history. Massive fan of this song best version I've heard is the one from 5th October 1990 in Argentina live concert... 🤩👍🎸🔥
