    We are deplying these at work and it does provide power to the laptop (might be your model that can't charge) but they are quite nice with our laptops plugging in the dock automatically powers on the laptop. Line out is just an speeker jack.

      Andrew McEwan Correct it will supply power to most of the Dell usb-c 130w laptops. The XPS series will work also despite the 180w requirement however performance is impacted under high workloads. www.dell.com/support/article/uk/en/ukdhs1/sln304627/dell-dock-wd15-usb-type-c-information-compatibility-and-specifications?lang=en

      Yes, use the WD15 180w and you will be fine with one or two monitors. Keep in mind that you can't extend the .5 short cable because it loses otherwise its full 40Gb Thunderbolt 3 capacity.

    It's amazing how few laptop docks have a dedicated power button. You would think that would be standard for a device designed to be the middle-man/interface for the I/O for a laptop. The power button might literally be the most important button/switch on any computer.
    Update: apparently the power button only works on certain Dell laptops, and other non-Dell laptops are not supported.

      According to Dell's web site this dock will take up to a 180W AC adapter, and output up to 130W over USB Type-C (they quote 50W less than the connected AC adapter). The supported laptops include their XPS 15 2018 model, so not too low power.

    I bought this. Here are some things. Monitor does not always get signal, using HDMI cable. After several put in and out cable , it starts working. But I took my colleagues dock, and its same with my equipment. With his equipment - it does not happen on his dock. So maybe its something wrong like cable, will need to test.
    Another thing - audio port from my laptop stops working when I connect the dock. I have to plug headphones wire to the dock. Also laptop speakers also not working when dock is plugged in (at least on ubuntu, did not test this on windows).

    Purchased a Latitude 5580 refurbished from Amazon, after discounts it was $349Australian, is in good condition, came with a 250gb pcie nvme m.2 ssd, have a 5550 latitude that the sound hardware died on which had a spinning platen drive, the cable for a SSD was the same, but fitting a SSD next to the NMVE, no room, opened up a crucial 480gb BX series SSD which I purchased a few yrs ago as a spare and was able to cut 2/3rds of the case away and fitted it with room to spare, there's word that only a 4 core can run both SSD and NMVE, but mine does run both I5 6300 is a dual core, perhaps a firmware upgrade fixed this before it was mine, also have a second hand Dell USB-C dock (same as this one in video) I picked up for $50 from Ebay (they are uber expensive new here) about a yr ago for when I was able to get a unit with USB-C, can confirm the laptop charges from the Dock, plug barrel PSU adapter into dock and USB-C from the Dock into laptop and it works, there's a setting to allow 150watts instead of 75watts power from the dock to charge a max of 2 devices from the dock in the BIOS=

    Rick below is right, it does supply power. However, I'd also like to add, that the USB-C port cable is a major fucking flaw with this design. If you unplug to use your laptop on the move more than a few times, it will begin to loosen up and form a shitty connection. I have a large sample size here, my organization has hundreds of these and they all are doing it. Absolute shit fight. Then Dell gets rewarded for it's shitty dock as we end up having to order more. Damn this dock to hell.

      Not all type C ports are the same, you need one that supports charging + data + display out. Most lower end laptops like the Ideapad series got a type C port that can only do data. That means it only works like any other USB A port only with a C form, like plugging flash drives, mouse, KB, etc

    Awesome review. All the info needed. I did go through the manuals for both the dock and my inspiron 15 7000 (7380), and the requirements for DP support over usb c checks out. The only thing holding me back was 1) inspiron isn't officially listed as a supported series for the wd15, but you covered that. And 2), I wasn't sure ubuntu would work. The internet is sceptical about this, but I've only noticed a positive trend in firmware reviews for this dock. And you've pretty much covered it all, so I ordered this dock and two P2419H monitors. Didn't bother with the P2419HC, because I don't need any form of daisy chaining support or usb c display output on my monitors if I have this dock anyway. Thanks a bunch. I hope I can contact you, should I really not be able to figure out whether or not my kernel version will support it. Although I do believe it should be fine. The inspiron I have was manufactured in July 2018 and my 18.04 is obviously installed after that. Should be OK, will report on this afterwards!

    • @ahobby
      @ahobby 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, my inspiron doesn't have display port 1.2 anyway, so I couldn't daisy chain even if I wanted to or my monitors allowed me to. So I chose to save $100

    • @Someone7089
      @Someone7089  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your desktop has USB-C, yes, but your desktop doesn't necessarily support sending video over the USB-C port, so only USB/ethernet on the dock might work. If your desktop has USB-C with a DisplayPort logo on it, you should be able to use 100% of the dock.

    Hi, I just bought a Surface book 3, and I have a dell wd15 dock which i use work my work computer (dell latitude 5490). The wd15 dock does work with my surface book 3 via usb c, however it is not as smooth as i would like. When I plug it, only 50% of the time charges my laptop, i have to unplug and plug it in until it starts charging. The other thing is that the wd15 dock is connected via hdmi to my monitor, and when i plug the dock into my surface book,, the external monitor is not detected. i have to unplug the hdmi from the wd15 and plug it in again, and it works. So i have to do all these to have the dock charge and provide connection to my monitor. Am i missing something here? like a driver or something? Or is this expected since the dock is DELL and my laptop is MICROSOFT?
