Really dug this movie and thought it was a blast. While it has familiarity of other superhero films, the hispanic culture feels so authentic and the family is so great it overshadows the criticisms for me. Also the family being so involved throughout the whole run time is something we haven't really seen before too. I also feel that yes we have gotten a lot of orgin story's past 20 years or so. Lately the past handful of years we've gotten a lot of huge multiverse story's. It was a little refreshing watching a fun simple orgin not trying to set up a universe.
I think what James Gunn might mean by saying that this is the first hero in the DCU but not the first movie means that when we get to superman legacy blue beetle will already exist. Who knows we might even see him in a post credit scene.
If James Gunn said that he was the first hero of the new DCEU. No matter how you look at it this translates as Blue Beetle is the first movie of the Gunn's new universe. we can't argue with this anymore. We need to start accepting the new era of DC. The old DCEU is over. This is the beginning of the new one. We as fans need to give this new universe a chance to develop. If the next couple movies fail then we can judge better. As for Blue Beetle, i personally liked it. An 8/10 film. Not perfect, but i still had a blast. just a fun superhero movie 😎
Pretty excited to see a superhero film that’s not about saving the entire universe or that has anything to do with the multiverse. Trailer sorta reminded me of the first Shazam Edit- it’s pretty good 👍
Hi Austin! I have a doubt...How do you score the movies with an exact percentage um letterboxd? Like, why do you give a movie a Score of 61 instead of 63 or 57 for example? What are your criteria?
A lot of factors came together tbh (superhero genre rush is winding down, we gotta face it, the mess of DC timeline and Flash backlash, everybody is aware these all are pointless since DC is rebooting soon, promotion make it seem like a uber-generic cliched story)
I might get hate for this but my unpopular opinion is that Shazam 2, The Flash and Blue Beetle is the best superhero films than anything marvel has produced with phase 4 and 5 even though The Flash and Shazam ain't the best but they good, Blue Beetle is definitely great and deserves the hype.
Beetle Juice, Beetle Juice, Beetle Juice - he should be banished from the chat now! I was so connected to these characters and I just loved it!! I had fun and sometimes that's all we need! While the villains weren't the best, I do love that they were clearly villains. I feel like Hollywood has forgotten how to make villains that are not anti-heroes or just "misunderstood". There is nothing wrong with a villain having a sympathetic story but they still need to be villainous!! I fell in love with Blue Beetle while watching Season 2 of Young Justice and I would love to see more of him! Young Justice Seasons 1 and 2 absolutely destroys the DCEU in every way!!
This movie was so good. It was so much better than I thought it would be. Excellent movie. I cried 5 times, it’s very emotional so anyone who is reading this if you haven’t seen it yet then make sure to have tissues with you when watching it. It had lots of heart and a beautiful love and bond with family. I loved it so much
I really liked this movie. Better than the flash and among my top 3 DC movies since 2013. Great review and while I don’t agree with the final score I appreciate breaking it down into categories instead of a regular 1-10 system
🚨 - Here are the facts: #1. Blue Beetle, Gunn said was the first character in the DCU; but the story in the movie is the DCEU. This means the same Actor but different version of the Blue Beetle in the DCU. (Different timeline) Superman Legacy is the first movie; but Blue Beetle is the first character.
I wanted to like it, but there were too many issues for me. How much it takes from Iron Man, Deadpool, Spider-Man, and Black Panther stripped away BBs unique origin to me. It was as predictable as predictable gets. I have problems with the dialogue being basic as well. I hope the target audience loved it, and I hope they feel like they were represented well.
I’m right there with you. I saw it on Wednesday and I enjoyed it, but we’ve seen this story a million times before, and the villains were just boring. But Xolo is fantastic, the family is wonderful and the action is very solid. 7/10 for me, it’s really entertaining.

Interesting take, two comments regarding Bruce Lee and Van Damme: I struggle with Enter the Dragon, I think the best Bruce Lee film is Fist of Fury. It would have been Game of Death if he would have got to complete it. The other “main” characters and forced dialogue in Enter the Dragon make it for a very boring watch for much of the film unfortunately. Definitely see Universal Soldier, it does have a pacing issue but all in all it’s a great film. I to liven it up like Bloodsport. Lionheart is my personal favorite Van Damme film, it has both heart and maturity that I think Bloodsport lacks, however Bloodsport is and will always be my guilty pleasure… Also, none of this has to do with Blue Beetle which is an incredible film even though they’re calling it a flop based on the numbers from the opening weekend. I loved everything about this film especially the family side of the story. This film will be the one that kids look back at 10-15 from now and say that this was their favorite superhero growing up… Tom Holland’s Spider Man and Shang Chi are pretty great standalone superhero films as of the last few years.
I enjoyed it. Villain a bit weak and some things were predictable, but I loved the family and I found parts of that quite emotional. Agree about certain scenes hitting hard. I teared up. It was fun. It’s a shame it’s not doing better at box office.

@@AustinBurke James Gunn has said many times that Superman: Legacy will be the first DCU movie Austin. Blue Bettle, played by Xolo, is going to carry over from DCEU to DCU, that's all. Also, keep in mind that this movie was written and shot before DCU was even a thing and the director confirmed Gunn had no inputs on it.
@@AustinBurke By "character is canon", I think he means that Blue Beetle is going to be played by Xolo in DCU but I don't think this movie's events will be canon. Otherwise, why would Gunn say "Blue Beetle is the first DCU character and Superman: Legacy is the first DCU movie"? I also don't think James Gunn wants the baggage from Warner Bros. It seems more likely that all DCU projects will be the ones made by DC Studios, but we'll see. We should get a timeline reveal after Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. He also said that DCU canon starts with Superman: Legacy, so what I understand is even TSS won't be canon. It's just same actors will play the different versions of same characters. (Like J.K. Simmons playing two different J. Jonah Jamesons in Raimi verse and MCU)
I liked your previous scoring system. This one seems derivative from so many others that don't dare to cross the 'Ts' and dot the 'Is'." Yet since cinema is quite subjective.... something like this could be more fitting.
Found the family either pointless or ridiculous. It's better than what DC has been putting out but very paint by numbers story. Decent but not in the sane world as the best of Marvel.
"Heels" deserves a lot of support IMO... for the same reasons. Much better than this flick I can assure ya. 9/10 for me. And I am not a fan of wrestling. My only complain is that is a bit predictable. Oliver Queen vs Bjorn Lothbrok and an awesome supporting cast. What is not to love?
Personally I think it was good. Not perfect but a solid 8/10 for me. I won't forget it. In fact, I hope they do a sequel and build the universe that way. The new DCEU has begun. hopefully it will be better organized/paced 🙏
I went to watch Openheimer a THIRD time not only because I love that movie but because I want BB to FAIL. A latino superhero is DUMB. Oh, and I'm latino btw.

Decent movie, but one missed opportunity was that they didn’t make George Lopez say, “Jaime please… *I GOT THIS!* “ like on his show 😂

Found the family either pointless or ridiculous. It's better than what DC has been putting out but very paint by numbers story. Decent but not in the sane world as the best of Marvel.
A 71?
This review proofs that Austin has very low standards.
Proofs?
At least I can spell the word “proofs” correctly
It’s proves
71 is actually good how he does these rankings. Great would be 80s. Top tier would be 90s
@@AustinBurke DAMN!!!!!
This movie was pretty good but a disappointment. It could have been better.
Incel.
Meh, it's an average at best movie that most people will forget about pretty quickly.
I loved it
Personally I think it was good.
Wow this movie lives rent free in your head.
Not a win for box office lol
