  • In this video I show you how to use Android Auto in your 2020 Subaru. This video works the same for Subaru equipped with Android Auto for any year 2018 and up. This is a feature I use in my vehicle every day! If your vehicle has the capability I definitely recommend giving it a shot. Today I am in a Forester, but this application set up is the same throughout the entire Subaru lineup.
Thanks for watching! My name is Robert Cox and I'm a certified Sales Consultant at Bloomington Acura Subaru in Bloomington, MN. I'm here to help you learn all the features on your new car!
If you have questions about your new Acura or Subaru please reach out to me anytime!

This video perfectly shows my issue with the Android Auto interface. If your phone slides around or if you try to pick it up, you lose connection instantly. Moreover I have tried and tried to configure my settings to disable charging while the phone is plugged in and just prioritize the connection and there's no setting for that either.

Why does it need a cable? why cant it use bluetooth like other cars

    • @Robert_Cox

For the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto it needs the cable to connect. This is pretty standard since these features have come out. The car still has bluetooth for other functions. We are just now starting to see wireless versions of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto become popular so with the next generation Subaru's it may be wireless!

@@Robert_Cox it is a real PITA to have to plug it in to use AA in our 2019 Forester. I absolutely hate having cables hanging out of the dash. In comparison, my other car is a 22yo Alfa with no modern electronics yet I was able to attach a cheap aftermarket bluetooth screen that synchs with AA on my phone wirelessly without problem, and relays audio through the car stereo via the FM band. Simple. On the downside, the screen itself needs a power cable to be plugged in to the auxiliary power outlet - so I still can't avoid ugly external cables....

Make sure you have a cord that would allow android auto to work. Look for a symbol on the larger USB side. If that doesn't work make sure your phone and all the apps are up to date. This is usually the biggest thing I see that solves the problem. Once you've done that and it still isn't working delete android auto and then plug the cable in. Can this be either configured so that the first phone that gets plugged in (or paired trough Bluetooth) is considered as primary; or is there a user's profile that remembers the settings so you can choose; or is there a screen message offering to make a choice which phone to use if additional ones are plugged in; or is there some other ways to ignore other passenger's phones? Hello! I'm not sure if your vehicle has an update; however, what I would recommend is to disconnect your phone from bluetooth and delete Android Auto from your phone. Once you've done that, plug your phone in again and the system will prompt you to download and go through the set up process. This has worked for me as I had issues initially on my 2019 Impreza. Usually I recommend using the USB-C that came with your phone as it typically has the best connection, but in reality as long as it has the symbol on the base of the USB side you should be fine. If you still have issues let me know!

I have a 2018 Crosstrek and connecting to use Android Auto has also been a nightmare. Initially I was told it needed a software update, and it worked intermittently for a few weeks. I had an S9 also. I've since changed to a Note 10 and an S20, and neither works properly and I can't even use the cord that comes with the phone since it's a C type connection on both ends. It seems like a small nuisance but when it was one of the selling points of the car, it is annoying. Connecting thru Bluetooth works like a charm but of course that isn't the integrated experience I expected.

Make sure all the apps on your phone are up to date. If that's not the issue then check the cord. If you're still having issues make sure the head unit is up to date!
