Having 2 family members diagnosed with Dementia, I had concerns about my own cognitive decline in 2018. After seeing a neurologist, I was referred to a psychologist who specializes in Clinical Neuropsychology. I was given a series of tests, the first of which being the one Trump claims to have "aced". But I can tell you, from personal experience, that test alone does NOT tell whether or not a person has any sort of cognitive decline/impairment. The entire series of tests I took lasted about 2 hours. I then had to wait about a week for my results, which, I was greatly relieved to learn, gave me a diagnosis of "Mild Cognitive Impairment"; no signs of early onset Dementia at that time. Thankfully, almost 2 years later, I can report that even though I do occasionally struggle with my cognitive abilities, I'm still no closer to a diagnosis of Dementia. What Trump is bragging about is so insulting to people that actually do have problems with memory and cognitive impairment. I'm confident he would NOT be able to pass a REAL series of tests for cognitive ability/decline.

Just a couple of things I'd like to address... the cognitive exam he took? Yes, it is easy, and he didn't even take the full exam; he took what is called the "Mini Mental State Exam". But, the questions on that exam are designed to diagnose very particular diseases, not just "dementia". Some of them definitely are geared that way, like counting backwards from 100 by 7's, naming the animals, and being given a short list of things or numbers to remember, change the subject, then go back and see how many of those he can remember. Funny enough, even if he had forgotten the order or forgot a minority of the things on the list, he still would have passed. To fail that, you pretty much have to forget everything. He makes the statement that the questions further along in the test are harder. One of those is a request, asking him to draw the face of a clock. That's a test to determine spacial acuity and executive functioning, and even delerium. If you want to fine out the reasoning behind these bizarrely simple tests, you can find it easily by googling the Folstein test, or the mini Mental State Exam. But please, let me point out one thing, and I quote, and this is so very very important to know: *It is possible to achieve a very high score but still have significant cognitive deficits, especially in areas such as executive functioning, that the MMSE is NOT designed to assess. * In other words, this test means nothing. He should have taken the full test. And on top of that, Trump hasn't said anything at all about the exact time he took this test or any kind of test. That's important information. Due to a type of dementia called "Sundowners", he could take that test first thing in the morning and "ace" it, as he keeps saying, but if his doctor would give the same test to him late in the afternoon... well... if he has Sundowners, he definitely won't do as well. Sundowners patients have a type of daily progressive mental impairment, where at the beginning of the day these patients could very well seem like there's absolutely nothing wrong with them, but by the end of the day they can get so bad that you may not be able to tell the difference between their Sundowners dementia and an Alzheimers patient. And that repeats every single day. It can take years before they become impaired 24-7. So yeah, let him keep on with that "I aced the test" rhetoric. And go ahead and laugh every time he makes that remark with the knowledge that he didn't even take the full test that would give him a clear diagnosis (or lack thereof).

I have Parkinson’s and I am in the early stages of dementia. I take that test every year and it’s a joke. In order to determine cognitive decline, you would have to have a baseline. The test Trump took measures dementia, not intelligence, but in his interview with Chris Wallace he said the last 5 questions were really hard. So, if he thought they were hard, he's probably at the cusp of having dementia, if not in the beginning stages. This is an important distinction, because that means he's no longer just a sociopath, he's a demented sociopath.

When my dad had a stroke they asked him a bunch of questions like the year, his birthday and social #, and had him repeat words after a few minutes. Interestingly he aced everything having to do with numbers but he couldn’t handle most of the others (he did remember the current president though, I believe he said “that dumbass Trump”).

Education is just not as highly valued anymore. If you watch fifties television, everyone on there was either highly intelligent or incredibly talented. For instance, you watch shows like What's My Line and the host and panel engage in wordplay and trade witticisms, all while smiling. I'm not saying that the world should be like it was in the 1950s. There were massive problems hiding under the surface. But as education became more widely available, the quality appears to have fallen. Social etiquette is not as important anymore. Entertainment media focus more on tragedy, outrage and conflict because those emotions are more powerful and attract more viewers. But even though things have improved massively in the past seventy years, I can't help feeling that we've all lost something, too. Behaving with class, grace, humility and tact will always be welcome traits. They are timeless. Of course, maybe past presidents were just as stupid. That's a worrying thought, but they were only human. Not all of them had a classical education.

One Interesting survey was done among universities across the country and found that people tended to act more self serving than compared to similar surveys done over 20 years ago, except California which was deemed an outlier due to a significant disproportionately higher Asian student population than all other states who tend to act with more grace and class.

Having 2 family members diagnosed with Dementia, I had concerns about my own cognitive decline in 2018. After seeing a neurologist, I was referred to a psychologist who specializes in Clinical Neuropsychology. I was given a series of tests, the first of which being the one Trump claims to have "aced". But I can tell you, from personal experience, that test alone does NOT tell whether or not a person has any sort of cognitive decline/impairment. The entire series of tests I took lasted about 2 hours. I then had to wait about a week for my results, which, I was greatly relieved to learn, gave me a diagnosis of "Mild Cognitive Impairment"; no signs of early onset Dementia at that time. Thankfully, almost 2 years later, I can report that even though I do occasionally struggle with my cognitive abilities, I'm still no closer to a diagnosis of Dementia. What Trump is bragging about is so insulting to people that actually do have problems with memory and cognitive impairment. I'm confident he would NOT be able to pass a REAL series of tests for cognitive ability/decline.

Just a couple of things I'd like to address... the cognitive exam he took? Yes, it is easy, and he didn't even take the full exam; he took what is called the "Mini Mental State Exam". But, the questions on that exam are designed to diagnose very particular diseases, not just "dementia". Some of them definitely are geared that way, like counting backwards from 100 by 7's, naming the animals, and being given a short list of things or numbers to remember, change the subject, then go back and see how many of those he can remember. Funny enough, even if he had forgotten the order or forgot a minority of the things on the list, he still would have passed. To fail that, you pretty much have to forget everything. He makes the statement that the questions further along in the test are harder. One of those is a request, asking him to draw the face of a clock. That's a test to determine spacial acuity and executive functioning, and even delerium. If you want to fine out the reasoning behind these bizarrely simple tests, you can find it easily by googling the Folstein test, or the mini Mental State Exam. But please, let me point out one thing, and I quote, and this is so very very important to know: *It is possible to achieve a very high score but still have significant cognitive deficits, especially in areas such as executive functioning, that the MMSE is NOT designed to assess.
* In other words, this test means nothing. He should have taken the full test. And on top of that, Trump hasn't said anything at all about the exact time he took this test or any kind of test. That's important information. Due to a type of dementia called "Sundowners", he could take that test first thing in the morning and "ace" it, as he keeps saying, but if his doctor would give the same test to him late in the afternoon... well... if he has Sundowners, he definitely won't do as well. Sundowners patients have a type of daily progressive mental impairment, where at the beginning of the day these patients could very well seem like there's absolutely nothing wrong with them, but by the end of the day they can get so bad that you may not be able to tell the difference between their Sundowners dementia and an Alzheimers patient. And that repeats every single day. It can take years before they become impaired 24-7. So yeah, let him keep on with that "I aced the test" rhetoric. And go ahead and laugh every time he makes that remark with the knowledge that he didn't even take the full test that would give him a clear diagnosis (or lack thereof).
Given that he sleeps in and 'starts' his work day after 10am ... it leaves a pretty narrow window for critical decision making ;)
For someone who "aced" that memory test, he doesn't remember if it's 30 or 35 questions, nor does he remember it's name - "whatever it might be" he says!

Education is just not as highly valued anymore. If you watch fifties television, everyone on there was either highly intelligent or incredibly talented. For instance, you watch shows like What's My Line and the host and panel engage in wordplay and trade witticisms, all while smiling.
I'm not saying that the world should be like it was in the 1950s. There were massive problems hiding under the surface. But as education became more widely available, the quality appears to have fallen. Social etiquette is not as important anymore. Entertainment media focus more on tragedy, outrage and conflict because those emotions are more powerful and attract more viewers. But even though things have improved massively in the past seventy years, I can't help feeling that we've all lost something, too.
Behaving with class, grace, humility and tact will always be welcome traits. They are timeless.
Of course, maybe past presidents were just as stupid. That's a worrying thought, but they were only human. Not all of them had a classical education.
