    Magical whiskers and knowledge.

    How magical are whiskers at the beginning of wisdom?
    As my son kept giving me advice, I thought, man, as soon as whiskers appear on the chins of guys, they become experts, forgetting that I’m the one who taught them.
    They should explain how to install roof-to-wall metal flashing as they are the real stucco experts because of their magical whiskers.
    Me, I’m too clean-shaven to know diddly squat.
    Did you know all stucco professionals are supposed to have magical whiskers?
    When you are young, this so-called peach fuzz is somehow connected to brain neurons, enabling youngsters to become like young Einstein, at least while the whiskers are on their faces.
    I guess you can equate them to history; Samson’s long hair gave him strength, so the legend goes that he became normal in strength once it was cut off.
    I remember the good old days when my sons didn’t have facial whiskers; they were obedient workers.
    Jason and I thought if you like this one, you will enjoy and learn much about roofing flashing or saddles in the video below.
    Protect your number 1 investment.

      That's not how stucco works, can that way be done along with 20 other ways of course, but we have to consider state or building codes.

    Great video Kirk! I learned so much from watching countless videos of yours. Question for you. What type of flashing did you use? Is this step flashing? Did you nail the step flashing to the roof? That would make sense as i would think nailing it to the wall would require you to break stucco if you need to re-roof

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SheenaNoori good evening Sheena, in this video the roofer step-flashing was already in place. We counter flashed it with a metal Drip-screed flashing used for stucco. 😉

    • @SheenaNoori
      @SheenaNoori หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! Yes I was asking if the step flashing that is already in place was nailed to the roof or was it nailed to the wall?

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SheenaNoori Depends on the roofer, I’ve seen it done both ways. Most tiles have a bottom that fuses to the bottom layer, thus has a nail to keep them flat and stable on the roof itself.

    only issues here are it would be best to run some water shield sticky membrane up the wall behind the metal.. Also you cant guarantee your work because you don't know if water wont be coming down the wall behind all of your work because so many times stucco leaks into all the staple holes or if thee is a window above they are rarely flashed decently. it is so hard to remove a strip of stucco and not shred, tear or damage the existing drainage membrane. Your just sticking tar paper up there hoping for the best is all you can do. I understand very few homeowners want to even let you touch the wall when they are getting a roofing job. And the low bidders will be the ones who say its fine to just shingle up to the existing wall.

    The answer to my problem are drip/weep screeds to prevent water continually ruining my stucco & causing dry rot underneath. Yay! Wondered why the builder had not installed them??? Upon removing plaster I found the weep screeds buried deeply underneath the stucco causing costly repair work. Arrgh! Also thanks for your tip on corner aids. If I can't do the plastering after watching your tutorials (50x now), I will hire a professional & not eat or buy gas for a week. 😆

    If you stucco a whole house front and back everywhere i mean all stucco do you set up youre own staging or do you have a company come in and set it up for you. iI am from massachusetts and do masonry work building fireplaces brickwork,blockwork etc...and have seen company's set up scaffold for say farely big size jobs.Do they even have companys in california that will set up staging for you or can you rent it say for the month? we have rented staging when doing the brickwork for McDonalds yes the hamburger joint known world wide from Marr scaffold company we set it up and pay after 30 days its roughly around two thousand dollars for say sixty six foot walk through staging pieces with seven foot braces the staging is six foot four and five feet wide and about 90 16 foot OASHA approved plank.

    I live in Las Vegas, Nevada. I hired a company to build a patio cover and attached it to my home. The roof is tile, the pillars are stucco and it was leak free for 20 years. We just had a rain storm and there is water leaking UNDER the stucco of the patio. I don't think the flashing was installed properly. What is the correct order of flashing connecting the stucco house to the tile roof?

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Evening Cooper Dog, you mentioned it was leak-free for 20 years, Could this last rain have brought strong winds with it?
      If so, it's possible the winds blew it upright where before it just rained with winds not as strong. Rain without the high wind will fall straight down with high winds. It will fall and be blown horizontal and even upwards.
      Another possibility is that roof walls, and every other thing on this earth, including us, need maintenance. Something on this roof could need maintenance like caulking. When I need maintenance, it's usually whiskey. 😎

    I attended a seminar not to long ago stating with some of the modern cements and stucco’s that asphalt paper products counter act with the wire mesh and corrodes it away. I’ve seen this first had with acid rain, lime scale mixed with cement products rotted out the bottom metal lath channel and leaked. Granted it took some time like 15 yrs but it happened to an entire development. Guess who made all the money on the repair ? And there 10 yr warranty ? Yep the builder.

    What to do if there is no flashing just roof to stucco with caulking where they meet? To fix, should you do the weep screed first and then the flashing beneath it?

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Howdy, my friend. If you dont have the step flashing on your shingled roof for whatever reason. Hire a roofer to install the step flashing.
      This diverts the water from entering your home.
      Or do nothing and pay 20 times the cost later, to remove the interior ceiling and remove all the molded installation and suffer the consequences of mold disease.
      After your step flashing is installed correctly, if it's not now, break out the bottom of the stucco then install a weep or drip screed, this means counter flashing the roof flashing with the metal stucco flashing.
      Sorry folks, there are no shortcuts, or I would know them.

    How do you apply stucco underneath weep/ drip screed?

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello Lissa; excellent question.
      You don't apply stucco under a weep screed; that opening whether 1 or 2 inches is necessary.
      Stucco is permanent. However, roofing shingles are not; when it's time to change or replace the shingles, they can be laid on top of the existing ones without disturbing or breaking out the existing stucco.
      Plus the gap serves as an expansion joint.
      Lastly, it's a city code requirement to leave the gap. 🥂

    Really appreciate your videos--very useful info. Several mention reroofing not an issue if weep screed present. Had several different estimates and all want to remove 12" of 3 coat stucco to reflash the asphalt roof deck. Would be grateful for your input on what to tell next one-our weep screed is about 2" off roof deck. Thank you and keep up the great work.

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Evening M, installing a new roof often requires going up the wall at least 8 to 9 inches to be able to install new paper under the existing.
      Plus a person has to account for two inches clearance and 4 inches of removing the old weep screed so about 10 inches is correct.
      Peace, love with happiness to all.

    Kirk my stucco instructor!
    I love your videos!!
    I have a roof flashing where it meets the wall on top of my stucco
    Would you paint match the aluminum flashing or would acrylic eifs coating stay on it if it’s brushed on the flashing
    Or would you hide it with a foam moulding ?

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Evening Old School, your choice brother, if it were me I'd leave the flashing unpainted if possible.
      You can brush on a primer and paint, depends on it visability.
      Best wishes,

      I hid the flashing behind a thin foam molding and covered it with sand pebble finish, hides nicely. Your videos are very inspiring!

    Anyone you recommend in Orlando FL?

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I recommend you google “Plastering contractors” in your area. This may help you decide.
      This search may also bring up “yelp” Theirs is a paid subscription, so their reviews may be more biased than Google; however, you can scroll and read through the Yelp reviews.
      Hopefully, with the help of both reviews apps, you will find the best fit for your needs.
      If you’re still not sure, ask to view their completed jobs and or repairs and, if possible, speak directly
      with their past clients.🍾
      Best wishes,

    Would you use the very same technique for those areas that get heavy snows?

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Morning chuck I would, you can caulk the tops of the step flashings and attach the weep or drip screed to the step flashing, making water impossible to go up and over, but we only take this precaution where the wind with the rain blows hard.
      I have never heard of anyone doing this, but I do, just in case.
      Cheers,

    Hello I am going to build a patio my house is stocco on the outside. Do what is the best way to attach the ledger board to the house without breaking the stucco? Do I use flashing to have no leaks I am going to put a 30 yr ark on the top of the patio roof?

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Howdy Brian, find your studs predrill your holes in the studs or sill plate, squeeze in a lot of caulking into the holes then lag bolts the ledger board on.
      Always bet to remove toh stucco and use z falsing, but that luxurie isn't always an option.

      First of all thank you for your response it helped thank you. Removing the stucco is a big pain in the ass. As you know. Is their a way it will work without removing the stucco.?

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Howdy Brian, we miscommunicated no worries, the above method was referring to going through the stucco walls.
      Taking stucco off walls bites the big one, I have alone taken off the equivalent of 5 second story homes in the last 30 or so years hate it with a passion, but I love applying stucco.

    why do you use paper?

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Howdy Zolt, good question,
      all stucco is placed over lath, (paper and wire)
      we have to install new paper under the existing to waterproof the new work,
      we also tie in new stucco netting or wire to existing wire to avoid hairline cracking.
