I go looking for videos like these when I want to get out and do something like thins myself and I can’t make it, it’s so satisfying when you find good content! This dude is a blessing. His hobby and technique is crucial for longevity within the species, the habitat he’s in speaks for itself! Keep doing what you’re doing brother, thank you!
Your content literally takes me back to days as a 15 year old in Washington running them hills and mountains. Your survival tips are common sense but definitely require you to dig in to the details of what you should know and learn in wikd places. Live it Clay. Be well.
Another great hunt. Didn't get anything for the freezer except the rabbit but that happens. Time out with family and friends is always worth it. Nice fiddle playing too. Nate
Just living life on Hayes terms!!! Freakin love it!!! You'll knock one down brother, no question. And you kept saying "If I had a compound then that elk would be dead", but man that takes the challenge out of it!!! Not that compound hunting is easy by any means but obviously much more of a challenge with a stick bow. And that much more of an accomplishment when you do stick one.
Awesome stuff! I learned a lot from you how to shoot a recurve video. This is my second year using a recurve and I successfully took a grouse a few weeks ago and most recently, two days ago, took my first deer with a recurve! 20 yard lung shot, had to track it for about 180 yards. Still in shock that it happened.
I like these videos because physical limitations mean I would not be able to go hunting like this. It's interesting to see and hear real live elk hunting with a longbow and hear real elk bugling, seeing the lay of the land and the mountains is nice too. Thanks Clay!
Im from the UK but only watch US hunting films like Clays . Y'all have such a beautiful county set in mystery and wonder. I wish i lived in your North west . Totally amazing country. Im definitely a country person, no big cities.
Awesome content for sure! Makes me wish for some younger days. Still bow hunting here in Florida and hunting vicariously through your mountain exploits. Best to you and your family!
Sometimes hunting is about sneaking around all day, observing and been one with nature. Good to see you didn't split up. That's how people end on #411Missing. Stay together.
Thanks for the film! I sure hope you keep making videos because you have the right stuff and people who appreciate what you are doing know it. Good luck and have fun.
Absolutely love your videos Mr Hayes, this reminded me of our Dad taking us tent camping during the first week of deer archery season in New York back in the late 70's early 80's
@@clayhayeshunter looked forward to it every year. We could tell by the look on his face when he walked back in what happened that day. My family still hunts deer albeit from a trailer with a compound
Clay! Please do more of this. I used to watch Steve Rinella (Meat Eater) so much that I bought his book. This scratches the itch and gets my blood flowing. Thank you for this!
Clay, I have to say, I'm impressed by your hunting, but even more by your ability to film while hunting. I can't imagine the level of difficulty that must add. I can barely remember to snap a picture when I've got an elk playing in the area. Really great work. Thanks.
Definitely adds a lot of complexity. I miss a lot of opportunities while trying to film stuff but it’s what allows me to play in the woods for a living so I’m good with it 😉
Wünsche dir im November viel Glück bei der Jagd, selbverstänlich bin ich wieder dabei bei der Jagd. Danke für's mitnehmen.Gruß Dav aus Niederbayern Oberspechtrain. ❤❤❤
Hey Clay, beautiful video, love how we can truly see your masterful experience and the years of dedication to your craft. I'd love if you could make a video about how you made your quiver, I'd love to see your craftsmanship at work, and I'd be happy to uselessly attempt to follow along hahaha
Nice vid Clay. Glad you and Tiege are still running those ridges. I could recognize No Name, the big meadow and the mahogany bench from the vid. If you want to come over to the the west side for fish, crab and salmon let me know. Bought a house in La Conner, 15 minutes from a boat ramp. Got an extra bed for you, Tiege can sleep in the yard.
I’m new to this channel, from the UK, it’s because of you I have started to make a bow! I’m using Hawthorn, so I’m hoping it’s going to be forgiving 😅. Keep up the great work mate 👍🏻
Really enjoyed the video. Felt like I was hunting with you. Haven't been able to hunt for a few years because I am teaching in Papua New Guinea, but next year I will be home for elk season in Oregon. Hoping to make my own bow while I am here from black palm with a possible backing of native bamboo. Your videos on bow making will be my guide.
I definitely appreciate using a stick, but there's a time and place for compounds and even crossbow. I started using a recurve but when I started now hunting I had a browning mirage was top of the line then. I got a few small bucks with it. Then when I had a little money I got a Mathews solocam, 1800 bucks all set up most expensive hunting weapon I own. But I thought I was still tough and threw out my shoulder during turkey season. Have not tried it after that. Then I got severe anemia and to weak and sick to try it got a crossbow for a few years, but I need a cocking device now, too weak to pull it back and I'm short so it goes to my neck to get it drawn back and I can't do it. Now my medical stuff is so bad I can hardly walk 2 blocks. My will is there but my body gave out. I still live through all of you but i wish I could still do it id like a buck pronghorn and a elk but years of doctor visits it just gets worse. I did go to Wyoming 21 years ago when I had a little cash and got a small mule deer buck and 2 doe pronghorn. Love the pronghorn so great better than whitetail.
When I first saw your shoes, I thought "oh, the poor guy has some pretty shabby footwear." But I just got a closer look... not shabby at all. I'd imagine you can walk much more quietly in those. Really learn from your vids. Thx. ...and that's a really good book.
Man, the struggle all too real! This was not unlike my New Mexico Archery Elk hunt this year. The first 3-4 days were spent trying to find the nearly silent elk, then the next 2-3 days, after we finally got into the elk, had some close encounters, but not close enough. I wish I'd had another day, but it wasn't to be.
People have no idea how hard it can be to cut that thirty yard mark down to that twenty yard selfbow range on the ground! I’ve come to love the hunt as much or more than the kill as I’ve got older. Of course elk meat for the freezer is a whole other story!
OF COURSE! I got elk in the freezer so now I gots to get my dad a hunk! My 6 year old son got to watch as a bull came within 10 yards and died within 60! Praise the Lord! Thank you Jesus!
@clayhayeshunter I asked him to record and he thought I meant for him to record me haha. So he got a perfect recording of me but didn't get the elk in the video 😂. I can't believe he even was able to think/record in the moment! He's awesome. I had a similar experience when I was 6 with my dad. I got to see his first elk with a recurve at 20 yards.
I've always teased the compound guys at 3d shoots telling them to get rid of their training wheels and get a real bow. I didn't get to elk hunt last year due to running around in the bush of Alaska so this year I grabbed my training wheel bow and shot a spike. I'm a little ashamed of myself but it's sure good eating. 10 ringed that rabbit nice shot
Hi Clay, Thanks a lot for the video. One thing I wanted to ask for months since I started following your channel and was waiting for a hunting video for you to see the question. The way you sometime carry your bow by holding it by the string looks super dangerous to somebody with no bow experience. Since you do it it is probably safe but to me looks like a great way to snap the string or damage the bow. Thanks again and looking forward to the Alaska hunt. Hope you had a great time there.
Obviously not Clay lol but I thought I'd chip in. It's not dangerous at all. You may bang up the riser a little if you're not careful what you're doing but holding onto the string isn't necessarily bad. Infact you actually are angling the string away from things that may cut or damage it while hiking that way. Just be careful hiking with the string towards the ground, that's how accidents happen sometimes. Usually just means picking stickers out of your rig hahaha. Best of luck maybe Clay can answer with even more insight! Take care!
Awesome. Can you do a video at some point on what you look for when scouting public land elk via onX or google earth? What you see from maps that may indicate bedding/feeding areas for new elk hunters who are heading west
C’mon Clay, ha. For women and children? I get it, I used to be that way bit hell man some of us don’t have the time or the yard to put in the practice it takes for trad hunting. I have 4 trad bows personally and love them but haven’t had em out hunting for sometime do to the respect of the animals and lack of practice time. I will say that over an 11 year span I killed 6 bulls with my old mathews, all 20 yards and in. One at 3 steps. 5 were 6x’s and one 5x4. Probaby could have taken any with my HH or Bob Lee but just didnt feel like I had put enough time behind the string before heading out. Anyway, keep living your best life and shooting straight.

beautiful. appreciate that you allow silence and just the soundtrack of mother nature.

I agree. Raw, unadulterated nature….reminiscent of the hunting and nature shows out of the 70’s.

I love watching these videos getting amped up for a hunt! Finally got a caribou with the recurve on the haul road this year, keep Killin it clay!
That is awesome! I thought about doing the haul road hunt but ended up on a moose hunt instead.

Thanks for letting a country boy living in the suburbs live vicariously through you for a while😂!
Awesome hunt. Hard into the elk, just needed another day or two. Thanks for sharing!
