i work at the san antonio plant in texas where we build the tundras and I will tell you where the money is going. it's going into my pocket and the pocket of about 5,000 other hard workng, full-time employees. that money helped me and my wife buy a home in the area where our family now has a place to live and I use that money to buy things here. so the money is here and stays here. GM's money is going to people living in Mexico.

Until now, I have never owned anything but Ford and Dodge trucks. I just traded a 2008 Ford Super Duty 6.4 Diesel to a new 2014 Tundra. My friend traded his 2012 For Super Duty King Rancher 6.7 Diesel for a 2014 Toyota. He and I both traded for the same exact reason. Ford puts in new engines each year and each of them have a whole new set of problems. They never perfect anything. Both my 6.4 and his 6.7 were turds and both were riddled with problems and Ford knows it but won't do anything about it. I like that Toyota continues to perfect a drive train rather than just throw a new engine at a problem truck. I agree with the Toyota rep in this video... If it aint broke, don't fix it.

A truck that runs of any size is better than a Ford. Quite frankly. I had no desire to drop another 70 grand on another POS Ford. I can tow most anything with my Toyota that I could with my 3/4 ton diesel and I can run it fuel almost half the cost of diesel.

Joe Moore I was a die hard GM guy.... tired of new chevy trucks with less than 4000 miles and problems with AC and one had the check engine light popping on every few weeks...a brand new 2010 GMC Z71!?. TUNDRA finds what works and keeps it...and tundra over engineers their trucks for Q.D.R. quality... durability...and reliability...that's what die hard brand loyalty Ford ,Chevy,and Dodge guys would learn if they could just give Toyota a try...I'm glad I did.
I was a die hard Ford guy until i started doing research. I ended up buying a 2016 trd off road and I love it. Yeah Toyota isn't flashy and it doesn't change much and I think that's where that reliability comes into play.
If you want gas milage buy a pruis. If you want a man truck with a big v8 and tons of toqure, here ya go. Oh did I mention reliable?

I'm getting one this weekend and I cannot WAIT! Haven't had a pickup since my very first car, a 1984 Toyota 4x4.
My 2014 Tundra is my fourth Toyota and replaced my 2005 Tacoma which only needed one battery replaced and, recently, a brake job. (No other issues...NADA). You can see quality from the top to bottom in my Toyotas.
I've spent 10 years working thru the Middle east and Asia. Toyota owns all the ground between China and Africa. You want to see poor road conditions, extreme elevations, and drivers who are very unforgiving on their vehicles. It's common place to see 30 year old Toyotas loaded beyond GVWR and still going. Most of these countries don't know or care what a GVWR is. These trucks soldier thru and forgive all. Most North American imports do not do so well. We have perfected the disposable automobile. Someone in marketing should really capture the life of a Toyota there. It sold me.
that is why no other car company can dispute Toyota for the most reliable car brand... its also the same reason Toyota has to keep on making reliable cars

Just bought a new 2014 trd tundra. Countless hours of research, the f150 was made too cheap, the chevy was too expensive, and the resale on the dodge was terrible, this tundra is badass! Love everything about it, the Ecoboost was my second choice but ford can't seem to get their shit together with their motor issues and the thought of having a v6 pickup bothers me :( tundra wins the day for me
Jd hunt l used to be a Ford fan , but lately Ford has been putting out a different small motor every other year. I don't believe that is good. My next truck will be a TOYOTA!
I try not to comment on these much, but TFL Truck has been invaluable in helping me decide which trucks can truly provide the amount of truck I NEED, so I can weight that against what I want and make a good decision. Decided to go with a Tundra and am very happy with it so far. Very excited to get it out with a heavy trailer. Thanks!
If your looking for mileage....don't buy a full size truck. I know of many people that bought a truck and complain about the mileage. They purchase a truck monthly payments are like any vehicle but later complain about gas consumption. I get 16 MPG on mine (local driving). It is what it is. 5.7 double cab.
john moore They have a right to complain. This Tundra gets fuel economy numbers that match up better with demestic 3/4-ton trucks. That's pretty bad. Go check out fuelly. 5.7L Tundra ~ 14 mpg. Maybe Toyota needs to do a clean slate design instead of putting a facelift on an ancient truck design.
Tundra engines are are built in Alabama and transmissions in North Carolina.
I will be trading my Sierra for a 5.7 Tundra. I love the simplicuty of it, no gimmicky afm like GM uses, no electric fans either. Please keep it simpke Toyota.
The TRD trim is just beautiful ... I have an 06' Tundra SR5 with 20k miles on it and getting offered $22k by the dealer and definitely looking to trade it for the new one. Just gorgeous ...

I'm in the market for a a second vehicle and within my current budget I found a 2014 Tundra SR5 and wanting to verify the description... does the 2014 double cab come in a 4.6 L V6 engine? I've always wanted a Tundra, so wanted to make sure I'm getting the right vehicle
My brother has a 2007 with the 5.7. He says that his(and mine by default) can easily handle a heavier camper. He has been hauling a 27 foot camper around 7500lb with his 2007. TBH, he spent 18 hours ripping apart his dashboard to fix a blend door. Nothing is perfect, but I spent a ton of money on mine and I doubt it can truly give me the confidence I want.
Does any Tundra trim levels come with push button start or four wheel drive automatic ?
I bought a 2014 about 1.5 years ago for hauling my 3500lb camper! I have put a ton of time and money into fixing some small issues. I am upgrading to a slightly larger camper. I know everyone says the Tundra can handle the specs, but I worry.
I would buy a Silverado before any other truck but I have to say this is the best Tundra yet. Even though this is the best yet I would prefer the 2012 Tacoma my dad owns

hi kane, I was actually in one of their focus groups and I am a silverado owner. the group had all types of owners in it...not just Chevy, but ford and ram from my recollection. There were actually no Tundra owners in my group, but I would imagine they spoke to them. the guy in the room said they were traveling all over the country talking to people like us. it seems like they are working to get all of our opinions.
depending on which engine..it is either US or Mexico. Ram transmissions are either US or Germany. Tundra engines are are built in Alabama and transmissions in North Carolina.
they need to bring out a 6.5 in the crew max like everyone else

My friend had a 2016 tundra with the 5.7 and he said that it would take off when you would step on the gas.
I am a real big tundra guy but I do gotta say that I live the Chevy. Also I really want Toyota to add a bigger engine or at least increase the power in there engine also really want them to start manufacturing diesel engines in America.

Interesting. I wonder if they chose to ignore them or if they're planning a major redesign. Remember in the video he hinted at some segment changing updates coming to the Tundra. I don't think a square grill and embossed tailgates quality. :)
What about the "improvement" in mpg while towing? ~8 vs ~6.
powertain changes take several yeasr to implement. also keep in mind with the upcoming CAFE fuel eco standards full size pickups are going to be changing drastically. Since each manufacturer needs to meets increased MPG requirements for CAFE and the corporate fuel eco figure (which is used to determine if you meet the standard) is weighted by sales of models the domestics are facing the most heat since they primarily sell trucks (not MPG friendly compared to passenger cars)

Chrysler has used that Italian VM Motori A630 3.0L V6 diesel in the Grand Cherokee since 2011 and VM Motori has been producing some of the best diesels for decades. The transmission is a German ZF 8 speed. So don't let any of that scare you.
Toyota does have "diesel engine" but in USA, they do need to refine the tune for the environmental requirements. Also, in the USA custom not to use Diesel Engine due to noise.
Tundra is the best truck I have ever owned. Had mine 1 3/4 years . Don't mind the less mpg bur the truck makes up for it.

I have owned the Silverado with the 5.3liter V8 in LT Z-71 format. It was a very nice truck.
I owned the 2010 Model Tundra crewmax limited...also a terrific truck and actually it is more of a light "three-quarter ton", rather than a half ton.It sort of is in-between. If I have any gripe with the Tundra and this is true of all my friends that have one, is that it sucks on gas at on average 14.5 MPG highway. And it eats tires. If Toyota was going to fix anything, I would hope it would be MPG.
Went to buy a new Ford F150 5.0 4x4 crew cab stx, but ending up with a new Tundra crew cab 4x4 trd off-road. Only have about 2900 miles on it and will say the big girl has some body roll and drinks some fuel. Happy so far, but the engine is a bit louder (VCT) then my 2005 Ford F250. you know that ticking all the new cars have.

Not worried about the fuel, just letting people know about the mpg if they were looking at buying one. You do know a lot of people are buying trucks for their family car, and want to know real world mpg.
There are only two truck manufactures that I trust. RAM and Toyota.
Of all the post, yours is the most on point. It seems that Toyota is not really trying to push the envelope with this truck. Current owners were actually hoping for an update, not a refresh, which this truck currently represents. I not a fan of cylinder deactivation, but GM took a chance on this technology. Obviously Ford took a chance with twin turbos, and Ram with the new 3.0 diesel. Toyota as a whole is a conservative company from a design stand point. So who did Toyota talked to? not me.
I was at the auto show last week, and in terms of interiors:
1. Chevy/GMC
2. RAM trucks
3. Ford
4. Tundra
5. Titan (Welcome to 2003 lmao)

Aha, I know. It was my dad's truck but he passed away and I inherited the truck basically, but i already have a little passenger car (civic), so I rarely use it I admit. But I'm willing to trade that truck and my honda for that 2014 Double Cab TRD and have it as my daily driver ... it's a beauty ... And if you're wondering why I don't use it, it just brings a weird negative nostalgic feeling whenever I look at it.
Yeah... I don't know what's with Toyota holding out on updates. It's not just their trucks either. They FINALLY had a major update to one of it's highest selling vehicles: the Corolla. As for the Tacoma, it's sold in other markets (Europe, Australia, etc) as the Hilux. Just has a different front cap. And they STILL aren't pouring money into updating it. I get why they didn't do a lot of updating on the Tundra, the plant cost an extra $1 Billion to build over their estimated $1.5 Billion.
Ford's transmission is basically a ZF 6 speed. It's fine. I also think the EcoBoost is a great engine, go drive it if you haven't. But if I were after a half-ton, I would be looking at the forthcoming diesels from Ram and Nissan (3.0 V6 and 5.0 V8).
Toyota should up their games with the new diesel engine like in the Land Cruiser overseas!!!! Cmon Toyota get in the game!!

I would consider buying Toyota trucks if it was not for their notorious frame rust issues in cold weather climates.
They don't have frame rust I have a 2011 tundra no rust at all my cousin has a 2010 chevy and it had rust all over the frame it's easier to wash the c-channel frame then the fully box but it's your guys money you could spent it on what ever you like
I have a 2006 Toyota Tundra with 175,000 on her. I live in Wisconsin and travel to NE Minnesota and the Upper Michigan peninsula. It has spent 99% of it's life in the snowbelt and I have no frame rust issues!
that was only a few trucks on the 1st gen... since then Toyota has recalled the affected trucks and fixed the issue

The problem with the Big 3 is their vehicles have more Chinese parts than a 15 dollar dvd player from Walmart. Look at the rad hose problems on new Rams.

when Ford says something its usually a technically.... like when they said the 2013 Ford Mustang GT500 is the most powerful V8 ever in a production car (Koenigsegg V8 with 1200hp is most powerful V8 in a production car).... after some research you will maybe find that only 55% of parts in the F-150 is from the US

If it aint broke dont fix it is dumb. Improve it. The 5.7 is great but at least give the people something even more power from same engine.
i think the reason Toyota isn't releasing new engines is because they are waiting for the next 3-5 years to see if full electric trucks or hydrogen will take-off or a hybrid with a more efficient engine... they already have technology ready and develop now they are just waiting for the right time to release it...

What makes that 5.7L competivite? Well if you buy the truck to work the answer is simple RELIABILITY. Any small engine turbos etc.. they are not going to last without heavy maintenance and problems. There is a reason why they hold the values.
My working truck is Tundra and my daily driving is a Prius, problem solved!
Went to test drive a silverado the other day and it was embarrass to see the sales guy brag about how great the truck was and then.....the rear window broke when he was opening it to show me how cool it was (The tundra's window rolls all the way down). Nit picking, but it's a turn off for any buyer when something malfunctions on a test drive.
If Toyota and Nissan want to truly compete in the US full size truck market they have to step up.

I'm curious. They keep talking about speaking with consumers to determine the course of the truck's evolution. If they're talking to the whole segment, that's one thing, but if they're talking just to their specific buyers...how useful is that? Tundra buyers clearly do not represent the truck buyer segment as a whole. If they did, wouldn't they be selling more trucks? I'm honestly curious, because I don't see anything Tundra specific that a competitor doesn't do as well or better.
Where is the Ram engine built?
Ram has some grest sruff, but its all going to stop working before its broke in good . ..the life of a dodge truck isc is bout 4 years.

Ford has been making some of their trucks in Dearborn since 2004. The F-150 has been built in Kansas City for over 50 years and the Super Duty for the American market is built in Kentucky, they have never been built in Canada. Regardless, I don't really give a shit about how American a truck is. Anyone who thinks that outsourcing parts is absurd will soon be paying overly ridiculous amounts of money for pickup trucks.
Shame that they got rid of amber turn signals. Toyota should bring back the diesel that was supposed to go in it. I think that will get people.
Toyota has a twin turbo V8 diesel that is far more efficient than Ford, GM or Chrysler diesel engines but unfortunately its not available in the US....
dunhillsupramk3 More efficient no not really. It would do worse than the 3.0L v6 in the ram 1500. The Aussies have the engine in the 70 series which has bad aero dynamics but i doubt putting it in a Tundra would be be a huge improvement. I imagine the tundra weights a bit more than a 70 series land cruiser as well.

I have driven the new Chevy, it's nice, but that 5.3 doesn't thrill me (even the new one), not enough low end torque. I would go the new 6.2 if I were to buy the Chevy half ton. I don't think the limping was common. Same with Toyota's acceleration thing, I think there's just as much chance of a bad sample from any manufacturer, even the '14 Chevy was recalled. The EcoBoost V6 really is a wolf in sheep's clothing. FYI completely redesigned F150 and Titan will be out very soon.

The EcoBoost is built in Ohio, 6R transmission built in Michigan. The Super Duty engine is built in Mexico, Toyota's equivalent is built nowhere because it doesn't offer a Super Duty equivalent. Though the 6.7 diesel isn't helping American workers, the 6R140 transmission is, as is the Kentucky Truck Plant. The non-existent Toyota competitor isn't helping anyone.
GM has reduced their american parts content from 60% in 2013 to 40% in 2014. The numbers are available from NHTSA and the AALA (American Automotive Labeling Act). Look it up, all manufacturers have to report these figures.

U.S. sold Rams are not built in Mexico. They are built in Warren, Michigan. Not far from where I live. The Saltillo, Mexico plant is only for foreign sold Rams.
