The main thing I admire about you is what I call a PMA (positive mental attitude). Being positive about your disability is what makes you so inspiring. Congratulations on your books. Where can they be found

Sarah, you have finally gotten me to the point where I am getting so that I'm not uncomfortable with calling someone disabled. As I think I told you I felt that it was somewhat of a derogatory remark. I think one of the main reasons why people have so many misconceptions of what a disabled person is, is because when they see someone who is disabled, they automatically try to put themselves in their shoes. This is where you have the stories like someone going to help a blind person and not taking no for an answer and then help them cross the wrong street, or someone who sees someone in a wheelchair heading over to a curb to hop it, and just grabbing their chair and helping them without asking if they want help. People who think that blind people can't pour themselves a drink because they can't see when to stop. You don't see this kind of thing with people who have a friend or family member with a disability. I think there are two more factors to your being such a strong capable person. First is the fact that your parents have helped you learn how to be such a strong and confident person. The other has to do with the disability, and that was that you were so young and in a place where you could adapt much easier and quicker than had this happened when you were in your teens or even as an adult. If you are interested in why I say that, look at some stuff on Rasmussen's syndrome. The typical treatment for this is to remove the side of the brain that is not yet affected. These kids have been shown to be able to almost completely adapt to having half a brain and are able to do everything that a child without it could do. Your parents DID do an awesome job in raising you to be such a strong, positive, and capable person. I'm going to make that corny statement. I predict that you will go far in whatever you want to achieve. Yeah, that's not quite the well known comment that I was thinking of, but it's close. LOL

Thank you! Disabled is what people with disabilities are! So there's no need to hide that. It's not derogatory to say things like they are when it comes to me having a disability. I'm glad you're comfortable with the word now, but really, since I am comfortable with it, you should be, too. The belief that "disabled" is a derogatory term is insulting in itself because I am disabled! There's nothing derogatory about that. Though, given society's views on disability people, I see why you once felt that way.
Yeah, I agree about people making unreasonable and unnecessary assumptions about disabled people and going too far with helping to the point where it's actually harmful and not helpful. There are so many incorrect beliefs people hold regarding disability and that makes for us having a more difficult time. Able-bodied people can't be in our shoes because they're not us, so what they really should try to do is to be accepting and understanding and educate themselves so they're not ignorant.
      Thanks for the support :)

I learned a lot from this video. I did hold a few of those assumptions about the disabled before today. And everyone's disability is different. People often try to help disabled people on things they can do themselves. Also, in addition the reason some people may not want to say the word "disabled" is because they have an internal fear of becoming disabled.

I'm so glad you learned something! That's part of my goal with making videos, so that really means a lot to me! Thank you! And I completely agree about people having a fear of becoming disabled. I was actually just talking about that with my friend today! Wanting to be healthy is understandable, but being disabled isn't the only life-altering thing that could happen to someone! So the fear is often too irrational and misguided. Thank you for your support! :)

This was a great video. I find it really inspiring how you were able to use positivity to help you find the good things in the obstacles that you have experienced. I recently wrote something about how labels aren’t nearly as important as what we in society make them mean and I think that would be called something Disability or different ability isn’t nearly as important as the connotation each label is given. I feel like society should become less concerned with what is considered socially correct and more concerned with recognizing the individuals in the disability community, just like individuals any other community, Will have their own opinions about what they should be called, and then it’s OK for the opinions to differ. I think that respecting individual choice about the word they want to be used to refer to their particular identity group is more important they coming up with one blanket term

Could you do a video on the adaptation you use when driving?

    • @SarahToddHammer
      @SarahToddHammer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

I’ve had a few people request that! I really want to, but I don’t have a car and probably won’t for a few more years. I could make one and explain using photos, but I feel like that wouldn’t be as clear or interesting. I might make one that way or just wait a few years and do it then!

Could you make a video on adaptive driving? I think that would be interesting for viewers to watch.

YES! I definitely will do that! I don’t have my own car, so I would have to use pictures, but I really want to do it! I might just go ahead and make one now, or wait a few years when I have a car to make one because I think that’d be better :) Thank you for the suggestion!

The biggest positive for me was finally learning true empathy for others, and realising there are far more decent people in the world than bad... oh and getting to meet my wife when we both volunteered at the DPO where I now work 12.5hrs a week.

You are a rock star. Hopefully you know that God Loves you with an astonishing Love, a love that is _beyond your wildest imagining._ This world isn't the Disneyland, it's only just the temporary road to the Disneyland. Feel free to think of it like this:
    THE LORD is gracious
    and compassionate.
Slow to anger and RICH IN LOVE.
    ---Psalm 145:8
God offers YOU an Amazing Super Future of spectacular Joy, spectacular Gladness, spectacular Health, Happy surprises and *"Love* ...beyond what words can even explain."
“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what THINGS God has prepared for those who love Him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9.)
"Do you at last believe with all your heart that I created you in order to make you eternally Happy? It was out of *Pure Love* that I created you... to give you Infinite Bliss. O thank Me for your creation. Turn your life towards Me. Never cease to look at *My Love*
enfolding you; and feeling loved, love Me..."
"NOTHING that you may have possibly imagined of the Love of My Heart
    comes anywhere near the Reality."
