- Testing the crosman .177 piranha air rifle pellets through the Airmaks Katran and Air Arms xti50
It was freezing cold but i tested the accuracy and penetration of the crosman premier piranhas into the putty lined pellet trap and some accuracy tests on paper. i also ran a few groups with the jsb ultra shock as a comparison
it didnt go quite to plan, it was a bit of a fail really but fun to be out anyway. I will revisit the test when it warms up as they could well make a fantastic pest control pellet.
Another great video, it's great to see your process for pellet testing and working out the whys and what's for the results, I learnt so much in the last month from your channel, its good to get your thoughts on why something fails or succeeds, we have all sat there and wondered why somedays are good and somedays are bad, would be really good if you could do a a top end spring piston rifle series, thinking TX 200 or prosport
It's all about being methodical and questioning everything, for me.
I'm stoked you've found the channel useful, I just wanted it to be a light-hearted thing and a bit of fun 😉
I'm planning on taking a super budget springer and seeing what it takes of me and the rifle to push it's limits 😆
In my 97k in 22 at 15.89 foot pounds, I get the same results as you did. The domed premiers 14.30 though are almost pellet on pellet with the occasional flyer, The HN ftt are about the same maybe a bit better and no flyers. Thank you for the video.
That's good info thanks mate, in a higher power springer..
I'm really surprised how poor they were as the domed versions are usually pretty decent
They shoot great through my Diana 48 (23 fp), not just these but all Crosman pellets even the Destroyers. None of my other guns seem to like Crosman pellets aside from the domed versions.
Thanks for braving the bitter cold to make this video which was very interesting 👍
Personally I’ve never shot in extremely cold weather, was intending to venture out the other week (after watching your plastic pellet test) but the windchill was too much when I got out there to set up
I tried those and had very similar results, not one of my rifles liked them… but got to try these things. Another great video 👍
They looked like they should have performed a lot better than they did. The katran is a bit fussy on the whole, but the xti really isn't. That's shot a ton of comedy pellets that are much worse than the piranha in terms of size and weight tolerances and done better. Very strange tbh. will definitely revisit them in better conditions as I feel sure they should do better🤔
There pretty s... .not good I. Any of my rifles
So brilliant if your quarry is at the end of your barrell. Premier doomed are normally good pellets. I wonder if they are like the hades. Shite in .177
Yep. The dome headed versions are usually ok, which is why I was surprised these just wouldn't perform ... I'll come back to them with the other barrels in time and see if anything runs them with a degree of accuracy 😉
I got a gift of the Piranha pellets, when I bought my CLX and find .177 travel a long way with accuracy. Best Dave
Accurate as hell with a Walther RM8 Varmint .177 over 20 to 35 meters!
The Crosman Piranha pellets are one of the most accurate pellets with my Gamo Maxxim Elite rifle.
A few guys have said the same mate. What sort of power do you run them at?
@@tillysgunstocks about 11.5 ft-lb .22 cal.
Bought some of these because my TX loves premier ultra magnum, good job i didnt try these first, would never have bought any Premier pellet if i had.
if you ask me ,not enough speed in the pellet , and i think if in a high power gun used , they made of too soft lead
I’d love a grip and cheek piece like the one on your Katran for my Krait. Do you make them? If so, where can I buy?
Unusual looking pellet. I wonder what rifles they work in, may be higher powered rifles?
Hey mate happy new year. Cheers for another upload
Cheers mate. This weather is doing my head in, but atleast it's been dry for a few days now...
My Air Venturi Avengers 177's shoot those crosman pirhana lights out. About 1/4 in group at 27 yards or so at 800fps. I e never shot those jsb ultrashoks b fore. I might try those too.
I e noticed that in 177 that these piranhas don't like the average barrel with 1-20 twist. It's very unfortunate.
I never comment, but, I'd never dirty an XTI 50 with any Crossman pellets. Or any other rifle for that matter.
They are dirty and off balance. I don't mean the graphite powder, they are dirty.
While I'm here, I have S510 TR, 12 ft lb. Can't fault it enough to go for the XTI 50, which I love.
All the best.
I don't mind trying out the weird and obscure lead pellets through the target rifles, but I draw the line at lead free stuff made in tin. Don't fancy taking my chances on wrecking decent barrels. I machined a few cheap barrels up to test the really sketchy stuff 😆
Machining barrels is cheating!
Good shout though.
The longer piranhas might require a faster barrel twist. I tried various pellets backwards and was surprised that some were more accurate than fired nose first! I did only shoot at short range, ten yards or so, however I think some wax in the base would make an accurate "backward loaded" pellet at 25 to 30 yards. At sub sonic speeds the nose shape is relatively unimportant. Even high powered rifle bullets are sub sonic on impact compared to water or tissue, that's why they deform to flat as it's the best shape to penetrate live tissue. I wonder how much expansion the piranhas would demonstrate with a two to three inch penetration? Maybe use ballistic jell or "play dough" as it's a lot softer than plumbers putty. I use BluTack. One strip is enough!
Tried these in my HW99s and was nothing special at 20m. Very tight fit, I had to use a pellet seater as I found it difficult to push them in . I mainly use Rangemaster Kaiser in my 99s and for a budget pellet perform excellent. Same hole groups at 20m. The Crosman where also not great in my Daystate mk3. That loves JSB 8.44 in 4.53 and heavies. I have had good results with H&N barracuda 8's in both rifles.
I used both kinds of the crossman premiere and they where both junk .. the head sizes are all over the place I was shooting them in my break barrel and some wouldn't even seat in the breach .. and not one of my 5 rifles shot them in any decent way .. great vid though dude keep up the good work .
Gorra real nice promotional cardboard stand at one of the RFDs I use, ( with the phiranas) on the counter, Mrs asked if I'd tried them, I said no, I'd rather take Diane abbot out on a date.. They were ALWAYS gonna be awful no matter what you stuff em in.. Learnt my lesson ( though no fault of my own) when my lad bought me 2 boxes of Crossma premiers ( 1250 pellets) and they wouldn't cycle / load in my weihrauch (. 20) bought a sizer and sized EVERY goddam one of em, taking crescent shaped slithers off them all.. My fingers were as sore as whipped arse. ( you know, what you get in a Dutch brothel) never again.. Keep yer Crosmans, BTW, after sizing they weren't too bad
Another great video 👍
Please try measuring the head and tail of the pellet. I have found with yhe 22 caliber Crosman pellets that they measured 0.219 to 0.211 thousands of an inch. My magnum powered guns shot them accurately from the measured measurements of 0.219 to 0.217 thousands. Remember to measure the head and tail . Make sure the tail is always bigger or the same size as the head.
Interesting, we are waiting for the second part... But usually a pcp rifle is refueled in the cold and kept at the temperature at which they shoot, if you refuel it in the warmth and shoot in the cold, then there will be no stability☝😯
I stay away from Crosman pellets. They're too hard for my tastes. If you love them, buy all you want. I won't be hoarding any.
Hard?
@@user-rn3vz8we9k Yes, Crosman uses an alloy and not pure lead.
@@user-rn3vz8we9k crosman mixes antimony into the lead of their pellets to make them harder. The reason they do this is so that the skirts don’t get damaged as easily during transit. However, the drawback of having pellets that don’t get damaged as easily is that they also don’t expand as good when they impact the target.
Very interesting thanks for sharing 🇬🇧✌🏼
Have you tested the Crossman Copper Magnum pellets? They're working pretty well for me. I think my favorite right now are the Gammo Silent Cat. These are what is available at the store, I haven't yet bought any of the good stuff online.
I've not seen either of those in the UK, I'll keep an eye out.. Its fun trying some of the weird and wonderful stuff out there
Have you used pro shot pellets ? Carnt find anything on them
I've never known any pellets other than simple domes work well. These type of pellets are gimmicks.
I've tried most of the Crossman pellets in all of my rifles and never managed good groupings.
my katrans are terrible when the temperature drops below about 5 degrees. plus i am thinking that the fx chrony seems to be going a bit wild with the sensitivity since the last app change and its not just me that has found the same issue with the fx
Morning mate, yeah my katran doesn't like the cold as you can see. It's quite sensitive to temp changes and gets a bit of poi shift to the left as the temps drop.
Even my 9015 is more stable and that's saying something as they are well known to be temp sensitive.
Acclimatising them is an absolute must this time of year.
I have found the piranha does NOT have any accuracy in any of my rifles.
They loo like pizza parlour pellets. They look very different in reality than the picture you see on the tin.
That gun... not enough power for them pellets
Can i ask what that bipod is on the Katran? Is it high end? thanks
It's an el cheapo mate.. it took a bit of de burring and re machining to get it to work, but it was real cheap. Nice and solid now though 😉
zero accuracy, is it the weather, the pellet, the rifle, the shooter?...
Devastating 😮
They’re American… they’re not meant to hit the target. Only intended for friendly fire 😂
Paint your target pink it might help 😂😂
Hollow points way much better!
I gotta say l think those Crosman pellets look awful and they certainly seem to shoot as bad as look! Anyway another good test me old mate, keep them coming 👍
when will they ask aeronautical engineer to design the perfect pellet?
I know a man who can 😉
@@tillysgunstocks don't worry, i know.
I like crosmans my guns love them but piranha pattern is awful and won’t group at all
I got same as you in my hws
Unfortunately crosman pellets tend to do better with my catapult rather than soil my rifles with them.😂😂😂
😆😆😆 you know what, that might be funny for a video...🫣
Both my Daystate CRX and Steyr LG110FT like Crossman pellets.
The power of my rifles is unaffected by the cold.
The scope range finding is! So I have cold and warm weather range marks.
Sort ranged hunting... You cant beat RWS Hobby. Cheap, accurate and punch.
I run the same crossman pellets in 14.3 g. and can almost print with them in my 22 gamo urban.
My guess is the speed isn't right or the pellet is just rubbish in that caliber.
But I got tired of hearing excuses and speculation.
I would have already tried these out and known what to expect, grumbling about the cold , OMG ... They either hit or they don't.
You tried 2 different rifles and still speculating excuses.
But personally all the Chatter got old to me.
If you can't brave the cold pick a warmer day or find an indoor range.
You would think hunting pellets should be accurate for clean dispatch of quarry, fancy tips are no use if you cant hit what your aiming at. Cant beat plane good quality domed pellets. Jsb, h&n etc..... the fancy hollow points just dont shoot accurately in my experience..
But they are junk!
Slow down and pronounce your words
