I've been watching this whole Molyneux retrospective over the last couple of days. I went into it with the self-assured contempt for Molyneux as charlatan with no concern for the people he disappoint, that I think has become dominant since the Walker interview, and you managed to restore nearly all of my previous respect for the man as a designer and studio head, before slowly taking me all the way back to around my starting position and then with your final assessment send me off with a far more sober and nuanced perspective on one of gaming's biggest personalities. You've absolutely earned a new subscriber, and I'll be spending the immediate future plowing through your archives.

I have to admit, I used to love Molyneux; as a kid, I loved many of Bullfrog's games, and Bullfrog's logo was a symbol of fun times for me. As time went on and I became aware of Peter as a designer/studio head, I followed him from Bullfrog to Lionhead - whilst I didn't love as many Lionhead games as much as I did with Bullfrog, I was still happy with him as a designer and bought many of those games.
As time went on, and over the last decade or so Peter Molyneux's career imploded, I was sad and began to see the problems with Molyneux - having watched this retrospective, its a very good summary of his career and its sad to see that a) this seems to be where the story is ending, and b) in the 5 years since this video, not much has changed.
Like you, I've has trouble understanding how I feel about Molyneux - and that's because he's a complicated person, a liar who claims his own career in gaming effectively started when he blagged some free computers from Commodore, saw many, MANY quality games, saw him tutor and nurture many talented game devs who continue to this date, but also inflicted stress and crunch on many people too. He made promises and talked of amazing ideas, and delivered some and not others.
He clearly could have taken the money and run, or even just taken money from EA or Microsoft forever; like Kim said, he climbed the corporate and pay ladder not once but twice - but he threw those positions away on either principle (microsoft?) or frustration at not being able to focus (EA).
Peter Molyneux is a pyschological liar... who created a vast amount of good games and talent, but caused suffering in many and took money from many in the public too. He's not someone who can be easily summarized.

Like the saying goes in the bible, "The will is strong but the flesh is weak". I feel sorry for the guy. I think he has good ideas, brilliant ideas, but at every time he tries to make it happen it falls short. Or it takes far longer than what he think it would. So then the next project he feels he has to make up for it, so the ideas get bigger but the input doesn't compensate for it.
Fantastic series Kim, well done and thank you.

After all these videos I get the instinct feeling that Molyneaux wasn't so much a genius, as a fisher of men. Someone who picked actual geniuses to make his visions reality. Kinda like John Romero who had the grand ideas and designs of what he wanted, but needed a Carmack to make it really happen.

    • @Zontar82

Zontar82 I think they both needed each other. Carmack had the tech, Romero the ideas and design. When they parted you could see the obvious gaps in which their products had problems I feel.

Fantastic series! Being 31 and English I grew up seeing games in the late 80s but never seeing the industry and media behind it all. It's fantastic to have your point of view put across with all the magazine or industry insight to go along with it! Molyneux was indeed a visionary but a flawed one, working in a time that the medium of games exploded but always havign that one foot in the past held him back. Looking forward to any more content you produce, again, fantastic!

I don't know how I feel after watching all these videos. To quote from American Psycho: "There is no catharsis."
Ultimately, there's nothing that can be done about any of this, and the only thing that could make me forgive Molyneux for breaking my heart so many times was if he made a true successor to Black & White, a real god game, which seems unlikely as hell now.
Still... As much as I want to find excuses for him and to focus on his goodwill, Godus makes that so very hard. I can forgive him for hyping up Fable to be something it wasn't; maybe he himself wanted it to be a lot more than it could be. But with Godus I feel there was almost an underlying cynicism and apathy ruling throughout. I can't believe that the man who made all these great games could sincerely believe that Godus is anything but a shitty mobile game. I just can't. Had he put all that money into some prototype that failed MISERABLY and never even saw the light of day, I would've been much happier - at least I could go on thinking he reached for the stars and came crashing down.
And if he wanted to make mobile games, why not say that? Why not be honest about it? He could've just said "I want to make a mobile game that will make you switch from your computers and consoles," and most people would still have been game - after all it's Peter fucking Molyneux.
I just don't know. I don't know why he did any of these things. He is the only person in the industry I've ever liked as a person, and as a kid I used to watch EVERY VIDEO with him because he was just so inspiring. Even when I knew it was bullshit I still loved listening to him because I thought, hey, this is a man with dreams, a man who wants to do great things and change gaming. Where is that man now?
What all of this does prove to me is just how horrible the games industry is. I mean, Molyneux was a god pretty much. And even he felt so restricted that he kept jumping ship. If you can't get people to try new things when you're a renowned visionary and the head of a glowing company then... I'm not surprised mainstream games stink so much nowadays - virtually unplayable.

Hi Kim, I have been following your channel for a few months and I've always enjoyed your work.
This four part series has been absolutely superb. I've never played a Molyneux game but I have always been aware of them and him. I was distantly aware of his fall from grace, mostly as a kind of background noise on the Internet.
This series has brilliantly illuminated all the twists and turns of his story. Like you I've come away from it wanting to like Molyneux despite everything. I'll probably play one of his games after watching this.
I can honestly say this has been one of the most enjoyable and informative things I've ever watched on TH-cam.

I do think it's funny that community update video, ol' Ramsay Bolton in the middle there left within days of it going up.
In all honesty though, Peter Molyneux is essentially gaming's George Lucas, a mediocre (at best) creator in his own right, whose only true talent is finding and hiring great talent with other people, then sadly taking all said accolade of their talent for themselves when they get too big.
Both of them need some to challenge their ideas in order to make the best possible creation, Lucas had Gary Kurtz for example...
But haha, you did use that clip I mentioned in the end :D

man, did you know that GL was considered one of the best directors at one point? im not a fan of almost half of his works, however, he was far from being mediocre. his influence alone on so many directors is absurd, and thats not taking into acount his inovative film making.
you probably are thinking Old man GL as the real one, however, if you go back to see how he actually did alot of thing, its almost like a completely diferent person... ironically, its almost the same thing that happened to PM.

I do agree with the comparison Syndicate, Dungeon Keeper, Populous were like Molyneux's Star Wars, Empire, THX 1138 etc but then Curiosity and Godus were like Red Tails, The Star Wars prequels etc and it all came out in the wash when he didn't have the original talented team at his disposal. I would say that he is more openly passionate about his craft than Lucas but at least Lucas tempered his aspirations when dealing with the project. Both sold out to megacorp also. The big question is will Molyneux become the comeback kid and redeem himself for his last few blunders or just sink into obscurity ?

I must say Sean Murray of Hello Games (Goodbye Company !) is a very naughty/mischievous leprechaun and deserves more flak these days. Sony UK wouldn't refund my No Man's Sky pre-order after 4 hours play so I'm none too happy with him and his crew. In all fairness it was probably his first bash in the media spot light but then that cheeky leprechaun in him came out and told stories as colourful as the rainbow at the end of which he got his pot of gold after release.

Great series. I don’t think Molyneux is a bad guy, I just think he was given waaaay too much rope. It’s actually a fairly common issue within the creative industry - people who are brilliant at coming up with new and original ideas are inherently terrible at actually managing and completing projects, precisely because they are always coming up with new ideas. He managed to wing it back in the Bullfrog days because the scope of video games was so much smaller because of technical limitations, those guardrails have faded away as computers have become vastly more powerful allowing games to be far more detailed and complex.

The Mansun tune certainly took me back to younger days. Being a girl was a B-Side to that single which was a pretty good tune too.

angry joe: more SFX movie reviews ?!?!?
AVGN: mike and bootsy play xxx ?!?!?!
the only new videos that excite me nowadays are new 'game sack' and new 'kim justice' videos ;)
great work kim, great 'in detail' game journalism on everyone's favorite narcissistic game 'promiser' ;)

I really love Lorerunner's Ruminations series. Though I guess an hour plus of a guy talking into the camera without edits isn't everyone's idea of an entertaining video. Angry Joe seems to have given up. Though no one has fallen as low as Spoony. Not even Peter Molyneux. Spoony is just a tale for the ages.

The saga is over and my God, it was a great roller coaster! I feel so bad and weird for saying this, but even after the Bryan and Godus fiasco, I can't help but like Molyneux as well. It's his charm, one none should trust, but it's enjoyable. Molyneux is basically a suit who makes games and that's pretty admirable. Thank you for the series!
