- Here's an F1 onboard lap driving at the 72km long Piccolo Circuit used for the Targa Florio endurance event. This Formula 1 hotlap is driven in Assetto Corsa with Charles Leclerc in the RSS Formula Hybrid 2020 using the F1 2020 Ferrari SF1000 livery.

Fun fact: Targa Florio had 3 layouts, this is the shortest one. The other 2 layouts were 108 km and 148 km long

The Targa Florio was quite possibly the most fearsome race in the world

It was into its later years but it was never as dangerous as the Mille Miglia or the Carrera Panamericana. The Targa only saw 7 deaths throughout its 70 year history, while the MM saw 50 deaths throughout its 30 year history and the CP saw 25 deaths throughout its 5 year history.

It's funny that at some point (5:27) on the right side of the road there was the sign "RALLENTARE" which means "Slow down"

So imagine making this with limited and crude 3D modeling tools on a toaster of a PC
If you haven´t seen it yet: TH-camr GPLaps made a documentary about the making of the Targa Florio mod. It´s really interesting seeing the work that went into it and the dedication of the modders.
My God !! I need to say my friend: you are really, really a very good driver. What an extraordinary achievement to complete this lap. Regarding the race track, I don't even know what to say. It fits 3 Nurburgring inside it doesn't it? In the real world it would be a 4 lap race. And I imagine that there would be a need to change tires in each one. Insane !! Italy is really a country with extraordinary racetracks !! How many cities does this track cross?!?! Insane, absolutely insane to run in those times. This was a memorable video 👏👏👏👏 !!

This is even the shortest of the 3 layouts ("circuito piccolo" means "small circuit") the other 2 layouts are ~100km and 149km long

You can still drive on these roads on all the layouts used for the Targa. These mostly bumpy roads are in atrocious condition in some places, and are sometimes even washed away by storms.

I live in Sicily (exactly 200km away from the start of the Targa Florio) and I can confirm the pain. It's really stressful mentally and physically in both reality and simracing. The last time I tried it on rFactor I did almost 200 attempts before making a decent lap, so I can understand Mitsos if he fell off the chair after this lap 😂

This would be incredibly fun to drive in a rally game with pacenotes.
If I'm correct, nowadays Targa Florio is in fact a rally, with special stages and pace notes. It's part of the Italian Rally Championship.

Out of curiosity, do you have to lap these courses in an F-1 car? Anyway there are period correct cars available? Just asking. Love what you are doing. Personally I would've loved to see the Targo Florio from a Porsche 908 Spyder. But this was still an awesome thing for me.

A love this track, I did it proper gaming wheel both with manual shtifting and semi-auto so many times I cannot count it, nor I can count number of cars I´ve tested on it, and still I just love it. But it took me around two years, before I could actually remember each corner, and I do not use map you know.

This is very impressive and all, but just to point out that the lap record is 33 mins and 36, only a few minutes slower than this. During a race. On a road lined with spectators. In a car set-up for another driver. In 1970, when your practice laps were shared with everyday road traffic, farmer's horsecarts and all.
Leo Kinnunen could barely reach the steering wheel, as the car was set up preferential to the #1 driver, Pedro Rodriguez (who was feeling a bit under the weather in that year's Targa Florio). Now just watch again how quick this guy is going round in a sim, in a 2020 F1 car.
