Today I learned: this game has bosses!! Loved and played the crap out of it over the last 30 years or so, but never got anywhere lol

I dreamed about this game. One of my fondest memories was playing this game with a friend and his brother at their house in the neighborhood. I vividly remembered everything about the game...except the title. It got to the point where I would dream about it. Lo and behold, 20 years later, I came upon this speedrun and I froze in my tracks. It was the game I remembered. Classic NES is a memory. My greatest memory.

Heck of a run. This game is super hard. I never get tired of dying in this because the music is glorious

This is one of those weird NES games I had a kid and had absolutely no idea what to do. I played it many times but would end up just wandering around aimlessly

Until we got a game genie, this game was many hours of exploration with no clue where to go ever! But we loved it! Good tunes.

I love this impossible game. So many frustrated childhood hours. And adolescent hours. And adult hours. 😂

YOOOOOO! I played this so much as a kid! One day, I was thinking about it, so I looked up the soundtrack on TH-cam. I got to a song called "Boss Battle Theme". I didn't realize there were boss battles in this game. Because I never got to them. Because this game is fucking IMPOSSIBLE.

So glad that despite this pandemic, we can still enjoy GDQ. If this is being read by the community, I deeply express my gratitude for these amazing runs. Thank you

This makes my inner child who struggled with this game for months before beating it giddy.

my only issue with this game was that I literally could not figure out where to go and with who. I got lost often and even got soft locked in some areas cause I was the pet and couldn't jump high enough to get out of where I was.

the music changes depending on which section of the castle you are in and this corresponds to the character you are supposed to use

Legacy of the Wizard was one of those games I rented a couple of times but never got very far with. I really wanted to like it but it was just too obtuse and I was too impatient to properly learn it. Great music though!

I figured out and beat this game as a kid. Lots of fun hours. The one part that drove me nuts was finding the shield. Once I realized every room had an inn and a shop, I tracked down the one room that seemed to be missing a shop. When I realized why, I facepalmed. It was rather clever bit of hiding, really. :)

Played this game as a kid (and beat it too, thanks to a couple well-placed calls to the Nintendo game counselors) - it's definitely one of the underappreciated games in the NES library.

When I was a kid I had so much trouble with this game (which I was also obsessed with and wrote fanfic about for some reason), but I did discover pause-jumping on my own. I even wrote into Nintendo Power with that trick, although I don't think it got published. Similarly you can also cancel fall damage by pausing before hitting the ground. My favorite glitch was probably how holding up while standing on spikes canceled spike damage.

Another NES game that is basically impossible to play without a guide. I never have any clue what I'm supposed to do and where I'm supposed to go, the game tells you absolutely nothing.

As a kid, I knew I had to get the 4 crowns, and I knew were all of them were. and I knew I had to use the crowns to get the sword to fight the dragon...
but I didn't understand how the crowns were used to get the sword, especially since you only have 3 item slots, and you needed four crowns. I'll have to see if the manual tells you these things, as I have a complete in-box copy
Edit: yep, the manual tells you the story, and that the kids offer to help their parents find the 4 crowns to unlock the Dragon Slayer and stop Keela when he revives.
There's also an entry about "The Picture of Princess Celina" in the back of the book, saying once you get the 4 crowns, to use one and discover the secret of the princess to find the Dragon Slayer.

yup. you were supposed 2 map it yourself but yes, very obtuse.
once you figure out whose area is whose its doable, theres just no indication of that w/o trial + error

This game would've been so different if it had in-game text to just say what the items do. Great run.

It never occurred to me to use the Power Knuckle for the boss fights; that would have prevented a lot of deaths 😂
