Today let's cover what CoQ10 (coenzyme Q10) is good for. A coenzyme is something that helps an enzyme. There are a lot of different enzymes in the body that go way beyond digestion. There are enzymes that help perform many different functions. They're proteins that are involved in all of the biochemical pathways in the body.
CoQ10 is found in every single cell in the body. It's a very powerful antioxidant, but its main job is to stabilize membranes, especially in areas of your body where you're generating a lot of energy. The membrane around the mitochondria (the energy factory) needs CoQ10. Lipoprotein membranes, as in HDL and LDL, also need CoQ10.
When you're generating a lot of energy, you're also generating a lot of free radical damage and oxidation. CoQ10 helps to counter that.
Statins block CoQ10. Blocking this enzyme can create a lot of side effects, especially muscle damage. If you're taking a statin, you may also want to take CoQ10.
If you have any nutritional deficiencies, you may also be deficient in CoQ10 because it sets you up for not creating CoQ10. If you have inflammatory conditions, you may also want to take CoQ10.
    What is CoQ10 good for?
    • It can help support the heart
    • It may be good for athletes that generate a lot of oxidation
    • It may be good for people who have migraines or headaches
    • It may be good for people who have inflammation
    • It may be good for people who take a lot of medication
    • It could potentially help protect against cancer

In Germany, if a doctor prescribes you a statin drug without also prescribing CoQ10, he or she can be charged with malpractice.

@Dan I would put this in the realm of fantasy. In Germany almost no physician ever is sued because of malpractice. They even prescribe the most dangerous antibiotics like sweets for little children without any restriction and without sufficient reasons.
We in Germany always think, there are much better guidelines in the US.

I have only started taking this within the last week and I notice a difference already. Why more doctors don't tell their patients the benefits of Coq10 is beyond me. I have had extreme fatigue since I became very sick in Dec/Jan with getting pneumonia twice. I was just about over the first bout when I caught another virus going straight to my lungs again. The fatigue has been pretty severe, but I think this is helping which is why I came to youtube to do a search on it. I just can't believe how good I feel in the last couple of days and this is the only thing different that I have added.

Great information, thanks, Dr. Berg. I have a question. I was recently taking a beta blocker, propranolol, at a moderate substantial dose for multiple years. I have read from multiple sources that beta blockers decrease COQ10. Is this true? Should I be supplementing with COQ10 to restore levels of this coenzyme? Lately I have been taking a 100mg COQ10 pill about once or twice a week with meals. I no longer take any beta blocker and haven't for a couple months. Any thoughts or feedback on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Great vid.
