Fallout 3 had a feeling that I didn’t get or necessarily want from the other 2 modern fallout games… it made me feel alone. Running around downtown or the outskirts felt so lonely, desolate, and quiet until something popped off. I just felt truly like I exited the vault and had nobody, nothing, no Codsworth or shopkeeper to keep me company… just me with a prewar bolt action rifle and a constant run in with danger, from raiders to mutants and more.
I like the fact that the world feels a bit more alive in the other games too, but Fallout 3 did what it set out to do excellently.
I think Fallout 3 had the strongest atmosphere of any game in the series by far, and it's the one world that truly feels like a wasteland.
Doing the lords work out here bullying BGS into being good again and Microsoft into giving us a Fallout spinoff
Emil Pagliarulo needs to be removed from Bethesda until than expect abysmal writing and horrible lore retcons in all Bethesda games.
He should not be lead writer. I don't like people being fired so he can stay just not have the say so as to speak.
@@ANGRYWOLVERINE2060-ft2ncyeah firing is a bit extreme imo, he's pretty good at making side quests
@@benhawk4214 he wrote or lead oblivion's guilds, right?
@@ANGRYWOLVERINE2060-ft2nc tbh given some of his previous work, I think he’s a decent writer. Just absolutely unsuited to be the head writer since his philosophy and style leads to very little cohesion in the game. Perfect guy to be in charge of like a faction or two’s story but not the entire game
I know he got a lot of hate for it from some sides, but I really recommend watching neverknowsbest's video on that topic. The Emil hate has really gotten out of hand.
The Les Freedman interview was so depressing bc Todd pointed out so many good games, systems, and understood why they were good. Then made Starfield.
My theory is BGS issues were there the whole time but the multi-studio 100a of Devs broke them
Yeah Bethesda has gotten too big for their own good. Too corporate and bureaucratic.
That interview made me a bit intrigued when Todd compared the game to RDR2 (my favorite game) because I thought they'd tune up the realism, but instead it seems that they took all the wrong lessons from RDR2 and basically said "well RDR2 has slow and "boring" gameplay so why can't we", but it just doesn't work as well
I never was a fan of any company. I always was a fan of the game. That saved me a lot of pain and made it easy to just discard something that didn't match my expectations.
Exactly, people are doing this as a job at the end of the day and as much as people enjoy a game, it's just a product at the end of the day and should be held up on its on merits and not supported because it's from someone you like
Fallout 3 was a good game, but Bethesda has changed since then, and I do hope they learn from their mistakes. Also while developers do it as a job I think reducing it down to a product is no accurate.
The word 'hate' is over used and especially when talking about game development companies or people and its also the disrespectful way to word it, feel like they deserve some slack for the joy they bring to us with their passion for games (any passionate dev team), even if they make mistakes along the way. Kindness costs nothing. The one thing i dislike the most about us gamers is our snotty attitude and nostagic tastes. like i get it, older games or the first game hit different but give credit where its due on the new games too!
You gotta react to "the making of fallout new Vegas " done by obsidian in the same vain as the fallout 3 making of
hopefully he does. This was exceptional.
Guys, if you never touch a BGS game ever again, Todd can never lie to you. He'll be our honest little pookie bear forever.
Love fallout games. I can’t believe I’ve played 3 and knew Vegas for 14 years. I feel old. I play them regularly and I still occasionally find out stuff about them I did not know.
Damn. Emil has lost a lot of weight. Good for him.
That’s not the only thing he lost.

God, I remember when that 2008 trailer was first shown off, and just thinking that it was the most incredible thing I had ever seen in a videogame.
I had never played a Fallout game before, so I had no concept of what Fallout even was. I had never seen anything like it.
Emil Pagliarulo is the one person to fix their obesity and somehow end up lazier. Truly an accomplished man 💯
Too lazy to eat
Well it's obvious, attractive people make less good games. They're too busy grabbing lunch with their co-workers and spending 30 minutes picking a meal that matches their Keto diet.
🎶I don’t want to set the world on fire honey, I love you too much🎶
Ill gladly stop treating BGS like a toddler once they figure out how to release an update that works as they promised. I really cant see them any other way when their idea of ultrawide support is a stretched hud.
probably my favorite video you've done. Thanks, Luke.
removal of the gore system flushed Starfield down the toilet for me.
Love you Luke, been watching since 2015 which is weird to think about.
Two things,
One I think there was a planned gore system in Starfield. I think the exploding jet packs and maybe the broken helmet you find on your ship might be artifacts of that system. Maybe when they nerfed the environment systems that went with it?
And also Starfield did have a special Star Trek actor named Armin Shimmerman who did play in a Next Generation episode and had a regular role on Deep Space Nine. I think there's a few other minor actors too scattered throughout
The fundamental problem is that Bethesda doesn't recognize that there is a problem. The first step of recovery is admitting the problem exists. The recent Fallout 4 patch is a shining example of people who believe they can do no wrong and resent the people buying their product for not praising it regardless of quality.
Currently the only Fallout game that I finished back in November 2020. Played the GOG ver. for "Fallout 3 - Game of the Year Edition" on the PC, and it was actually good, also finished the DLCs as well.
Fo3 was and still is an amazing game.
Need a remaster.
Remaster worries me. Remake alittle less so. I have no confidence they can touch up 3 and do it any justice. Fact is. 3 and NV are really hard games to go back to and play. If they remaster 3 I feel like it’ll just be 3 but higher resolutions and hopefully higher frames. But I’d like the combat of 4 or starfield with a truly “next gen” landscape. Idk how feasible that is. And honestly. I don’t know how feasible it is to expect BGS to be able to deliver on that. I do not know how to make games. And have no idea how much of an undertaking it would be to remake. Which imo is what they should do. But knowing BGS it’ll just to be the remaster with little to no effort.
@JerseyMikeTV I completely disagree.
Fo3 and nv are easy to get into, and they are amazing games, and their character models look way better than 4 and 76.
Current day bethesda would insert a bunch of LGBTQ stuff (* can't say what I wanna say about this due to youtube censorship) in a remake, and with a remaster the chances of that are little to none.
That said, I wouldn't mind a remake. I don't see why we can't just have both.
I like the mafia remake, still enjoy the first one a lot more, and still want a remaster.
@@Elnegro..yeah i can easily get back into 3 and nv. And i would welcome a full remake of the game, all i want is maybe some extra content and graphical overhaul thats all. But if it sucks we still got the og
@@merksmovies25 I'm not anti remake, I just want a remaster 1st (*which apparently were getting according to the leaked Activision court documents), wish they'd remake both NV and 3 in a pack or something two games in one.
Wouldn't mind a remake assuming they keep out all the sjw garbage and just make fallout 3 with new content fixing some plot holes (*like the food situation), redesign of certian settlements to make them larger, more characters, more quest so on and so fourth.
That said I'd want them to redesign thier character models from 4 and 76 as they're hideous and not comparable to the amazing models of 3 and nv also ghouls better stay looking like gob and not this Hancock nonsense.
@@Elnegro.. yeah fallout 3 has to remain 3 and not take the vibe and feel of 4. They are very distinct of each other. I dont think theyd add sjw stuff, they are one company that never really added much of that to their games. Imo starfield named characters all looked great, i wouldnt mind their models. However, the ghouls have to remain the same design, they are soo freaky, cool and disturbing. Either way remake or remaster im dropping cash on it
I feel like I played all the greats, Halo, AC, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Call of Duty, Arkham, Tomb Raider, Far Cry etc but I’d never touched a Fallout game or any BGS game. I liked the world of Fallout and I enjoyed the show so I’m just now getting into Fallout. I got Fallout 4 and if I’m still feeling it when I’m done I might have to play Fallout 3, New Vegas and 76. Being totally new to the franchise I’m really enjoying exploring the world and finding random stuff. Still haven’t played Skyrim yet so still need to get that done
Hopefully you will love the games.. Good luck and I envy you, for not played any of them! :D
God I love the candle.
I just saw that your candle is Godd Howard 😂😂😂😂
The setting of this game should taken place only decades after the Great War (before Fallout 1) instead of after the events of Fallout 2. It makes no sense that this part of the country is this hilariously apocalyptic, while the rest of the country is intent on creating nation states again.
FO3 is probably my favourite game (still, amazingly) but so much of the world building would be fixed by just putting it in those first few decades after the war as you say. (It would require major faction changes though, likely no supermutants or BOS but you could still have the water purification project drive the main story.)
The celebrity thing is probably that they need big name actors to help them splash back in the day. After Skyrim there is no need. They will still sell without the cameo
I recognize fallout threes problems but for me and coasts on nostalgia and being like my first introduction to what a RPG could be
5:25 that accuracy 🎯🤤
Besides Matt Perry as Benny rip; new Vegas had Danny Trejo as Raul, Zachary Levi as Arcade & Wayne Newton as Mr New Vegas
Larian Studios hinted in an interview about BG3 that their next RPG with be a space game. This should be interesting to compare with Starfield.
I enjoy Tale of Two Wastelands that combines Fallout 3 and New Vegas. It uses the New Vegas system and stuff. Lots of fun.
Bottom line... As dev teams grow, most of the time the games become bloated and end up being lesser for it. Too many voices, too many checkboxes, too many agendas, and too many managers to have to go thru. Without and strong voice to guide a team of 400+, it ends up taking several years to produce the product and as we've seen recently, these games by huge dev companies end up being mid at best. I remember Tim Cain (one of the original creators of Fallout) talking about how when working on The Outer Worlds, he wanting a simple scripting made for a NPC and the person in charge of the script said he needed a month to get it done. Cain said he could do it during the lunch hour, but the scripter was firm on the month time frame. Cain then said he could show the scripter how to do it. And the scripter stormed out od the office. When Cain askes the manager in charge of the scripter why he could just do it or why it would take a month, the manager said he could give the scripter 2 weeks to get it done. So Cain asked him "If there's nothing I can do to make this happen now, do I have to just settle for 2 weeks?" And the manager said yes.
So, with modern game development, we have bigger teams, crappier stories (due to DEI), and less engaging and fun games. Especially from Bethesda. I'm sure Todd would rather go back to the old days. But then, also, he'd have to do more work. So, there's that. On one hand, I like AAA games. But increasingly, I'm more attracted to smaller titles that actually have good gameplay and a good story. Dev companies that can do whatever they want and don't have to bend the knee to DEI and consulting firms like Sweet Baby Inc to get the game made are becoming more and more popular. Have u ever asked urself the question, "Why do modern games suck? I miss the games from 20 years ago." Well, look no further than to the points I mentioned above.
You can definitely have bigger studios make games that aren't necessarily bigger. It's just that bigger studios means bigger risk and thus the marketing appeal and longevity of a longer game becomes more attractive.
Microsoft need to swing its ownership penis around and setup some dream team dev teams for fallout
I don’t get. I don’t think BGS is as bad off as he makes it out to be. Are some things outdated? Yeah. But starfield was still a huge undertaking with an amazing amount of content and detail. Tons and tons of work. The gameplay is a huge improvement. And the graphics are art style is nice. They dropped the ball with 76, but it was a corporate decision. They needed to make money because of how long starfrield was taking. We can’t put that on the team of developers who are putting their hearts and souls into these games. Starfield is s good game. The hate is coming from a deeper place in my option. People decided whether they would like it before the game even came out.
My take on this scenario is that Bethesda was one of the first to input so much of those mechanics, illusion of freedom in more modern styled games that do not look like an ancient crpgs with big wall of text to read, etc. With it, mid 2010's to now, most of those elements are part on mostly every game, lots of games nowadays have shallow RPG elements at least. So the fornula that made them unique got tired. And how do you innovate on top of it?
I was actually thinking about this last night.
I bet if BGS was put to task to remake Fallout 1 and 2 in their modern format, it would sort of force them to relearn how rpg's are supposed to be, and may reignight their passion for it, or might just freshly inspire new ideas.
Imo it would be a win win, Bethesda gets better for it, and us games get Fallout 1 and 2 in a more pallet-able gaming form factor.
Ill always love falllout 3. Thats a hill ill die on lmao , i remember booting up that main menu as a kid and just being mystified.
Dang Emile has lost weight, good for him
You should show side by side photos of Fallout 3s dev team and starfield dev team to see if we can spot any differences
All my favorite studios of old don't exist anymore. Shadow of their former selfs. That's life.
The time to make games has more to do with production quality than with size.
Let’s not forget danny trejo as raul and wayne newton as Mr new Vegas
Reminder, he didn't say they had no **design documents** he said no design document (singular). Having a singular GDD is very oldhat and no one does that anymore. Instead there are many living documents of separate systems, including overarching pillars and ideas, which constitute the game documents. Which Starfield absolutely had. It just didn't have a singular GDD like noob gamedevs are told to make.
I'm not a chef, but I have taste buds. I'm not a musician, but I have ears. I'm not a painter, but I have eyes and a brain. Being a game dev doesn't make you immune to critisism, and not being one doesn't mean your incapable of critisizing.
tunnel snakes rule
I thought I'd replay F3 last December. It still stutters and Point Lookout is still a slideshow in places. Settings are irrelevant, hardware is irrelevant. Bethesda don't do optimization. I remember unpacking Morrowind's files and finding they had about 5 textures on each model instead of consolidating them into one. I suspect it's the reason there are no vehicles in Starfield - if you move too fast the asset streaming can't cope.
Emil’s Bethesda promotion bonuses clearly went to his diet and not to writing classes.
What was on his desk that was foreshadowing
The gold idol, which is from Indiana Jones, and now Todd Howard is working on the Indiana Jones game coming out soon
New videos coming soon; Luke critiques toddler drawings 😅
Your point about Obsidian not having time to make at ton of their own assets and models and stuff and just copy/pasting from Fallout 3, I think that's fine. Me personally, I play games for the story, i'd take 3 new Fallout games in the same engine and style of Fallout 4 if it just meant it was a new game with new story, new characters, new map. If they could do that and give us a game every 2-3 years then I'd be perfectly fine with that.
Hey Like wondering if you could check out gps game The Finals. You made a first impressions of it back when it was in alpha/beta. Interested to see what you think of the full release.
When my daughter was 3 years old, I told her the drawing wasn’t a stegosaurus. 😅😅
I really dislike them going away from RPG and going more Adventure.
one thought you gotta get correct, starfield is a sci-fi RPG not a space simulation, games that you should compare starfield to should be mass effect not no mans sky.
FO3s trailer was an amazing piece of work…I loved it. FO76 and everything after could literally cease to exist
Man oh man I hope those rumors of Microsoft wanting a Fallout sooner than Bethesda planned actually leads to something. 😢
People wouldn't be disinterested if I told them that I'm working on a shooter game at a party. I believe the issue lies with Todd. Perhaps he should have informed them about the chess club. ;)
Watch the making of oblivion, it is great.
Pretty sure the gore is still in Fallout 4.
One of the best game in history .fallout 3
Chunky keyboards all the way
Freaking Ubisoft is able to pump out massive, open world RPGs on the regular. Imagine if we got a new Fallout game every three years. It can absolutely happen so make it happen, Bethesda. Give it to someone else. Figure it out.
I didn't know Emil used to be thicc?
Minor correction, other than Downtown DC, which is the bottom right ~1/9th of the map, Fallout 3 is completely open. You could walk any direction from Vault 101 and basically go anywhere. New Vegas was a little more on rails with hill walls, literal invisible walls and beef gates (which were still passable but very hard).
Unlisted and only 5 views? Fell off hard
That's the thing Luke, games are not bigger now. 7 year dev cycles are unjustafiable given what we get
Games definitely are larger at higher fidelity and more dialogue, not sure why you think they aren't when every metric says they are
we got 3, nv and skyrim in 3 years...
Bethesda did do better when they were a smaller studio, but being a smaller studio is now a problem. Yes, the studio has grown a lot since Fallout 3, but it's still small compared to other studios who make the type of games they make. A studio the size of BGS can't handle 3 IP's. That's why there's a 20 year wait between sequels. That's a huge problem. BGS desperately needs to become a 2 game studio. They need to be able to have 2 games in full development at the same time. That means Todd can't be as involved. He would need to take a step back and manage the big picture instead of every little detail. If they were making 2 games at once, they'd be able to release a new game every 2-3 years with around a 6 year gap between sequels of their 3 IPs. Either that or they need to lease their IPs to other studios to make games in between BGS releases, just like they did with New Vegas, but they'd need to do it with Elder Scrolls and Starfield (if they plan on doing more Starfield games). Something has to change because they can't wait 20 years for every sequel. That's just stupid and insane.
After watching the show i started Fallout 3 again and i didn't get past the vault part. The voice acting was just another level of bad from the first second you wake up as a baby i immediately noticed its horribly mixed and just bad. Never noticed that back in the day tho.
Emil Paglirulo It looks like Majin Buu from Dragon Ball, the fat version of him, it's cute, cool, and good, while the skinny version is boring, bland, bad
Man you know things are bad when fallout 4 is 7 years older than 3 yet they look and feel virtually the same aside from slightly better textures and the workshop.
"they look and feel virtually the same"
I really think you might be the only person who thinks that. One of the major criticisms of FO4 was it's visual design taking on a slightly cartoony look.

@@RaNc0R most of obsidian are peeps from interplay

If I'm paying full price for a product that's busted on release, I couldn't care less about dev headaches. Gaming is the only sector now where it's apparently acceptable to scam customers, and it wasn't always like this.
I miss that professional smaller scope 30hr style. Modders try to recapture it, but the lack of an $XX million budget is impossibly to ignore.
Would love for them to ditch the hyper-graphics focus, and "endless' adventure.
Shit, I'd even take Fallout 3 gameplay if it resulted in a game that could hold my interest to the end.
Biggest thing, is that it's gotta be stable. For the first month of Starfield's release, it was crashing on the regular. That wasn't okay back then, and it's still not okay now.
I really don't think their strength is in competing with other games for standards.
People will bitch regardless, but so long as it's fun and engaging, that matters far more than bells and whistles.
(The problem is, their latest releases have been neither fun nor engaging)
Bethesda should move away from trying to recreate the Skyrim "forever game" phenomenon. I don't think the business side of things will let them though. Too lucrative (even though it was lightening in a bottle).
Fallout 76 was my moment of no longer trusting anything they make i got hyped and crushed by 76 fallout 4 was good and really good nowadays looking back but 76 just crushed me as a hardcore fan boy my first game ever was elder scrolls 4 oblivion and i loved fallout 3 and Skyrim but 76 and star field just crushed me i was sorta excited for starfield but it just wasn’t what i was looking for and i liked it at first but it just sucks to see how far they have fallen
You didnt even play the video a bit in the first 9 minutes lmao
Did you even play enough of Starfield to appropriately critique it in the way you do currently?
Fallout 4 was pretty immersive at release as i remember staying up for 3 days playing that and i started seeing hallucinations and shit. Mostly just ghouls and super mutants
As consumers we should expect good quality of products we pay any larger amount of money for, and we should be in our full right to give criticism when we receive something that does not deliver. However with recent trends of the AAA-industry, where the developers and leaders surround themselves with yes men, and fanboys + journalists keep defending their sloppy products with an almost toxic positivity, probably so they don't get on the naughty list and not getting pre-release codes etc., it's hard to take anything from the AAA-industry seriously nowadays. And it sucks since it makes you feel like your favorite franchises are taken hostage, and constantly watered down to fit the lowest common denominator, all in the pursuit of those quarterly gains.
Bethesda is not a small company anymore, and should be held to just as much scrutiny as other contemporaries, and yet they always seem to get a pass, regardless if it was a downright broken release of fallout 76, an empty space exploration game, or a "next gen" update to a previous title that ruins more than it fixed.
Vegas is ALOT more segmented than DC
Bethesda is not like CDPG, they have not even realized how bad Starfield is. I don't see them improving. Its now a studio that takes months to make a fov slider...
Hype makes you stupid. That's why people should stop blindly praising the Fallout show, which progresses the story in such a Bethesda way that it seems buggy as their games. Their games are always gonna be broken because they are gonna make them mod friendly.
Emil = weak writing,plus the guy's a jerk
Chris Avelone = peak writing
2:35 absolutely! the amount of comments when GTA 6 dev footage got leaked a few years ago of people who were like, 'wtf this looks shit' goes to show how many gamers have no concept of how much effort and work that goes into making a game
Fallout 3 is my favorite Fallout game easily.
I really don’t get what justifies the huge team sizes other than graphics, modern gameplay really isn’t that much different but they focus so much on graphics like who fucking cares
Yea I remember feeling like the graphics/gunplay was outdated even then and they still haven't changed the engine.
In regards to them getting big name celebrities, they either didn't or couldn't even get Ron Perlman back, maybe for Fallout 5 tho, they could probably get him cheap because he's practically begging for work these days lol.
I don't think he's begging for work just brcause he's not in much, the dude is nearly 75. He's probably happy being semi retired in his giant pile of money
@@JJJBunney001 If that's what helps you sleep at night, cool.
The ONE thing I loved about Fallout 4 were the green radiation storms. The first time it happened I nearly shit my pants, it was so damn cool. The rest of the game was just kinda meh.
I appreciate your optimism with Bethesda but I have none anymore and I'm someone who's been playing their game for 20+ years with a underwelming Fallout 4 and a disastrous Fallout 76 and finally a absolute disappointing Starfield. Add that to the multiple veterans that left the studio one person to note Nate Purkeypile and finally Bethesda themselves refusing to acknowledge their shortcomings especially with Starfield and being owned by Microsoft which let's be honest doesn't have a good record of manageing their studios. With all that I couldn't care less about Elder Scrolls 6 or Fallout 5 when they eventually come out or hell any game their making and that does not fill me with joy.😒
I played Skyrim till my console gave me the ring of death, bought every rerelease, and have played and replayed endlessly. I started fallout with 3, don’t hate 4 the way everyone else does, think it’s earned its place, and I’m struggling through starfield. The type of game Bethesda makes makes me a fan, but Luke hit it right on the head with the biggest critics being their biggest fans. We know better than most that their recent releases are so far from what they’re capable of.
Please for the love of God turn down the outro music.
can you stop this fake redemtpion arc for Bethesda already ? We see what you are doing after the disaster that is starfield, Fallout 4 and 76 have been disasters of buggy messes and awfull coding and engines too, Starfield was just the worst case but this studio is incompetent all around.
I just get sad thinking of Fallout.
I think it’s arguable, though that no one really knows what they wanted in Starfield until they had Starfield. When it comes to the fallout franchise, there’s no excuses. Obsidian should’ve been developing another one a long time ago and a remaster should already here, no lazy remaster, new Vegas, or fallout 3 should at least be in Starfield or fallout 4 engines
