Lec 60: Pattern Variables | Talcott Parsons

  • In this lecture, we will study about the concept of :
    1. Status-Role complex, Role Reciprocity , Role Expectations, Double Contingency and Mutual Steering Mechanism which makes the interrelationships and social action patterned and structured which leads to the concretisation of social structure.
    2. Concept of Pattern Variables of Talcott Parsons.
    3. The concept of pattern variables of Talcott Parsons was influenced by the theory of Gemeinschaft and Gesselschaft put forward by Ferdinand Tonnies.
    4. Parsons argues that actors orient themselves in action situation to contrasting set of values which he called dichotomies Or duality of cultural patterns.
    5.These dominant value patterns leads to categorisation and classification of inter-relationships, social institutions and societies in general.
    6. Ascription v/s Achievement.
    7. Diffusion v/s Specificity.
    8. Particularism v/s Universalism.
    9. Affectivity v/s Affective Neutrality.
    10. Collective orientation v/s Self orientation.
