- In this lecture, we will study about:
1. Systems approach of Talcott Parsons.
2. He analyses the unit act and analytically separate it into Cultural System, Organismic system, Social System and Personality system.
3. A system is a unified whole with its parts and subparts in integration with each other.
4.AGIL scheme- Functional Prerequisites of Adaptation, Goal attainment , Integration and Latency.
5. Adaptation function is performed by organismic system, Goal Attainment by Personality system, Integration by Social System and Latency, pattern maintenance and tension management by Cultural System.
6. Difference between functionalism, Structural- Functionalism and Structuralism.
7. Cybernetic Hierarchy of control in social system of Parsons.
8. Generalised media of interchange I. e. Money, Power, Values and Influence.

Application of Parsons AGIL framework to University as a social system.
1. Adaptation- Means adaptation of university to its environment which includes mobilisation of resources like fees ( education as a service contributing to gdp) , fund raising via trustees/alumni etc on university board. Also, university has to adapt to its environment that is to design the curriculum as per demands of industry and govt priorities.... University can also adapt the envt to its needs... It can change the envt.... Eg. Discovery of Pathbreaking technologies in university R&D deptt Or producing alumni (human resource) which could become industrialists and politicians and can alter the destiny of the nation
2. Goal attainment- University needs to define it's goals and priorities as an organization.... Like how to deliver education (semester vs yearly approach), what would be the fees structure, which new courses and educational streams to introduce, should the funding to R&D be increased in university research labs
University is basically an organization which consists of members having common goals and the coordination, control and convergence of these members could be possible through authority structure and relations. (Link to weber bureaucracy and dahrendorf ICA)
3. Integration- University as a system consists of multiple interconnected and integrated subsystems (administration, university board, student political groups, teachers, Research deptt, training and placement which links university with industries)... These systems need to be united and integrated in terms of common set of values (value consensus) based on university values and culture.... Also, conflict between different subsystems need to be managed using social control mechanism of university (enforcement of university rules and regulations, code of conduct).... Eg. Expulsion of student for misbehaviour or termination of teacher's contract for violation of teacher's code of conduct (eg.Love affair with a student)..... Or even administrator (selling exam papers)
4. Latency- University have their own functioning culture and values which are transmitted across generations of teachers, administrators and students across time. (Harvard culture is different from IIT culture which is in itself different from JNU culture)
Try to think on these lines, you could add your own points.... Also apply this for society, there you would have a lot of points and dimensions (that's compratively easier)..... All you need is conceptual clarity to write a good answer!!!

Sir can we interpret sectorization as a society is a system in that family ,inside that individual human being ( body will be system in that heart can be inside that particular chamber . At all these level AGILE will be there as all are system. Further in chamber also up to may be quarks .
Yes... Correct interpretation... Each subsystem is a system and need to perform all AGIL functions!!

Read any standard book for basic concepts.... Supplement it with current affairs... Also, see the types of questions asked from certain domains and try to cover those topics well.... Environment is tricky to handle!!

SIR Will climate change problem According to Parsons AGIL framework will come in adaption - economic system or goal attainment - political system (lack in policies of country .)
Also national security is due to lack in policies or threat to integration ie law .
Unemployment is related to finance Adaptation system but can be due to lack in political will.
Parsons does a simple mapping as in which institution of society will meet which functional pre-requisites predominantly..... Climate change is predominantly due to aggressive industrialization (economy and FOP/technology) and it could be tackled through our adaptation (greener economy/fop/technology like solar etc).... But all these aspects are overlapping, economy is shaped by politics (goal attainment- channelising resources as per Goal set by govt).... Now , Parsons does oversimplification through general abstract concepts..... But empirical reality is enmeshed, overlapping , inseparable and indistinguishable....... He is analytically separating the elements of these reality in different abstract concepts..... So in reality, climate change is linked to both economy as well as Nation) govt policies.
Therefore, Using Parsons abstract and analytical concepts, you should not try to distinguish between these different components of reality because in real empirical world they are indistinguishable.

FOR example
AS key problems in society currently are CRIME,population, climate change , unemployment , human rights all are interlinked and try to write them under AGIL.
also in university we have salary tution fees, cultural events , student union all these are interlinked

AGIL for society
1. ADAPTATION- society has to adapt according to environment needs like for food/development /security/ in order to gain these goals economic system helps(motivate/value) to mobilise society eg. japan has used it's limited resources (due to geographical constraints ) doing agriculture without soil
2. GOAL ATTAINMENT - society need to determine its goal and priority like for
EQUALITY - judicial system /rule of law/ protection to minority and how to give them is .... reservation /ADR / grassroot level representation
3.INTEGRATION- society is very diverse consist of multiple sub system ( State, family, shg's, caste groups, religious communities etc..) these should be united for smooth funtioning and value consensus based on culture and the conflict in society should be cured by police law and judiciary eg- freedom of religion +ve secularism
4.LATENCY- shaped by culture in society like education give sense of mobility and religion is gives a feeling of collectivity acc to durkheim
