I use ice melt that says it’s safe for pets, but I wipe my dogs paws regardless of what the label says. Your dog is so sweet and goes along with anything you do. ❤

Wow, I never knew this.. oh my gosh, he’s licking his paws always when he comes in from walks.. we live on Vancouver island, so still lots salt around on sidewalks..

Would you like to walk w bare feet on road salt? Do you think that would be comfortable or would it tear and dry out your skin? Canada Pooch sells Wellies for dogs for rainy weather. I put those on mine in spring and fall to keep the salt off his paws. They also have a good pair of suspender boots that stay on in the winter.
Cream is also available from Rocky Mountain Dog (and AB company) for a certain amount of foot pad protection from salt and also rough ground. I’m not sure if it helps on warm pavement but you could ask.

Found this out the hard way many years ago with one of our GSD. Made some homemade play dough to keep the kids entertained and of course they dropped a bunch on the floor because that’s what kids do. That night our dog kept drinking water and peeing like crazy. Took a quick Google search to put two and two together.

I would like to add to this, I recently discovered, that water softener can cause salt intake in animals. We discovered after fishing died and discovered it was do to sodium in tap water, also heard chickens can get water belly, so we use softened water to shower, do laundry and wash dishes. We drink water from our well now which is safe to drink. Oh and my plants are doing much better now also

Tula is totally working that bootie! She’s a great show model! My boy always wears shoes in the winter, not just for salt but when it’s below freezing. He always wears them in the summer above 80 degrees, especially when it’s very sunny. And he wears them anytime of year when it’s been raining because we live in NYC with high leptospirosis issues and people leaving poop that’s all getting washed around the ground or when we go somewhere that there might be lots of debris.
It drives me nuts when people say their dog doesn’t like them - it takes some training and getting used to. You can’t just put them on and jet out the door. It also requires knowing how to measure (check with each brand) and finding the best style for your dog. Most dogs need two different sizes for the front and back paws - the front is almost always larger. When you get them, make sure you’re putting them on correctly with the strap going just above the dewclaw for most style shoes. They also need to be strapped on tight so they won’t fall off. Look up videos for training. There are also breathable dog socks that help with fit bit the shoes shouldn’t rub and cause any sores if they’re strapped on well.
Thank you for this info! My puppy eats seaweed on our beach walks. She has had diarrhea and smelly farts. I have stopped going to the beach and she is well now. Is it the salt in the seaweed or the seaweed itself that makes her digestive system react like this?
My dog had seizures if we fed her any dry food and some can crap because of the salt we finally work that out after 2 years!!!🤯🐕❤

think that's a different sort of salt -in the UK it is rock salt. We use a small amount of natural sea salt in some recipes for dogs.

Love your content... can you give me some advice on liver health my dog has an enlarged liver and heart the vet thinks both my dogs have cushings.. no symptoms but blood markers indicate cushings.. I've searched and can't seem to find a video from you on liver

I have seriously just been dealing with this and had no idea why my one dog was so sick. Thankfully as the weather has warmed and made the "salty snow" run off the sidewalk in the yard it has obviously diluted the issue. I had no idea it was toxic given that I never "investigated" its actual ingredients prior to use. Because it said "pet safe" - I assumed it was pet safe.

I recently read for rinsing a dogs paws in general a solution if water and Providone Iodine with water to the look of ice-tea and soak for 2-5 mins can remove any harmful unforseen exposure your dogs paws picked up like, salt, lawn fertilizer and can help with killing yeast. Have you heard of this?

Tell him, it's common knowledge, that salt is harmful for cars and they have to get washed at the bottom after wintertime. So how wouldn't it be harmful for pets?

Water softener salt?
We wipe our dogs paws off with wet wipes when she comes in from outside.
Just use a towel with water. Im not sure what is in WetWipes. If anything resembles hand sanitizer that has a high ethanol content, it's toxic to dogs. Absorbing the ethanol can lead to alcohol poisoning.
@@pame1799 they are sensitive skin baby wipes. We have autistic twins who we use them for so we have them on hand anyway.
