    Fun fact: Deku" (デク, "Deku") is another reading of his first name, Izuku (出久, Izuku). Written with different kanji, it can refer to a wooden figure or puppet (木偶でく, deku), which is a term often used as an insult for someone who can't do or achieve anything.
    Izuku's nickname, "Deku," was given to him by Katsuki when they were children as an insult.
    According to Kohei Horikoshi, the inspiration for the name Deku was from Kenji Miyazawa's poem "Ame ni mo Makezu" (Be Not Defeated by the Rain)
    Later, Ochaco finds the nickname inspiring and says that "Deku" gives off a feeling of "I can do it" (頑張がんばる, ganbaru),because of its similarity to the word meaning "to be able to do" (できる, dekiru).
    In the Funimation dub, both Katsuki and Izuku indicate that his nickname is an abbreviation of a different nickname: "Defenseless Izuku," hence Deku.

    Actually, the reason Aizawa is so tired, is because he operates mostly at night, so he doesn't get that much sleep.

  • @spectorthecritic1723
    @spectorthecritic1723 ปีที่แล้ว +210

    In the manga and in the sub, Uraraka tells Izuku that "Deku" sounds similar to the word "Dekiru" which means "to be capable" and she finds that inspiring. But they had to change in the dub because it wouldn't make sense.

      In the past these things were explainable though
      When anime used to put culture and translation notes, and even ATLA was able to smoothly explain Hei Bai and Yue. I always wondered why it stopped (and why they straight up change lines and interactions)

    Aizawa changed his mind. He meant it when he said he would expell the bottom student, but he changed his mind when he saw deku adapt his quirk usage. All might was right, Aizawa didn't deny it, he deflected. That was my read on the situation anyway.

    Aizawa's Quirk "Erasure" allows him cancel the effects of other quirks. But he can't cancel Mutant-type quirks because there are apart of the quirk users physiology instead of a substance or effect produced from the human body.

    This has got to be one of my favourite episodes - it immediately put Bakugou as my favourite character.
    He is a hot head, he’s unstable and he can barely control himself but he is so smart and almost unchallenged with his control over his quirk as a student. He’s insecure and it feels like he’s got both a god complex and some kind of imposter syndrome because of that

    Aizawa is one of my favorite characters. He was planning on expelling the lowest ranked student, because he was sure it would be Deku, and he didn't think he had the potential. These kids have had their quirk their whole life (Deku being the exception, but Aizawa has no way to know that.) and Deku's body isn't used to his quirk. That looks like either he never tried learning how to use it, or is incapable of doing so, and both put him way behind where he needs to be to learn with the best of the best. He would rather kick out one low ranked student than handicap the rest of the class catching Deku up. However, once he saw that Deku was adapting quickly, he changed his plans and said he had lied at the beginning about expelling them. It does undercut his trust with the students, but he justified that was better than kicking out a hero with real promise.

    My personal headcanon is that 1-A was supposed to get familiar with their costumes on their first lesson with All Might but he wanted to do something more “exciting” and chose to do battle trials instead.
    I mean, they are thrown headfirst into a battle simulation, most of them probably never fought before and some of them are given support items that they’ve never used but are potentially lethal (Bakugo…). Even with U.A.’s “Plus Ultra” motto that seems too much. They’re supposed to push their limits, not kill each other on their first lesson.
    My other headcanon - All Might doesn’t have a teaching license. No teacher in their right mind would think battle trials are a good FIRST lesson. I really hope Aizawa ripped him a new one off-screen for this.

    • @chronosclaimsall
      @chronosclaimsall ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree that All Might probably doesn't have a teaching license lol, but I also don't think mock battles are that outlandish as a first lesson. You are right, many of them have probably never fought before, so these 15 minute skirmishes would be a good way to introduce them to the types of situations they might face in the future (random teams, unsure enemy location, having to protect an important item) as well as gauge their current combat prowess and help them figure out the things they need to work on. It was just supposed to be a fun little game to introduce them to hero training while also giving them an opportunity for feedback.
      Do I think it was a little optimistic of him to expect that all of them would have self control? Maybe. But there's always gonna be that one kid in the class that goes too far (Bakugo) and you don't really know who that kid is until you've started teaching the class.
      I basically equate this to their PE class and in PE, at least at my high school, after the teachers explained the sport we would be learning that term, say netball for example, the rest of that class time would be spent letting us play our own game of "netball" however we wanted even if we weren't following the proper rules. Then they started going into the rules and proper techniques in the next class. That's basically what All Might was doing here in my opinion and I see nothing wrong with it

    So i have a really interesting theory about Bakugo's personality.
    We know each quirk has a drawback. Bakugo yells a lot, he even gets angry when people around him mumble and dont speak clearly.
    I think bakugo has significant hearing loss from his quirk. And it causes him to come off more aggressive than he actually is (not to say he isnt aggressive but still).
    As a veteran with that issue, people have percieved me of being more assertive and aggressive than i intended. Even to the point of me being ashamed of it and avoiding conversations with coworkers. Or rejecting that shame by just diving in to their expectations. Bakugo might not even realize his hearing sucks. He just might think everyone around him is meek and quiet.

    • @nuhrii3449
      @nuhrii3449 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      no, its just he has an explosive personality, which is inherited. the actual drawback is recoil, which is how hes also flying, and something else which is expanded upon after season 2.

    Bakugo is such a crazy character. He's not what you expect him to be from the start. Plus, it's made clear that he has incredible instinct for heroism and is almost as intelligent as Deku. All on top of having one of the best Quirks that also allows for some incredible power and mobility. He's an almost perfect hero, with his personality being his only real failing.

    • @aros0018
      @aros0018 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      What's funny in that in regards to the physical side of being a hero Bakugo is way more like All Might than Midoriya ever is, even when he improves his abilities. While it's not that the two never work hard, they absolutely do, Bakugo and All Might are basically natural born heroes, not only having incredible instincts and ability but taking a powerful and relatively simple Quirk and figuring out how to apply it to any number of problems to find a solution. As Bakugo will say much later in the series, he's been able to do anything he's ever wanted with his Quirk. Like All Might, there's nothing he's particularly bad at.
      It's even better when you realize that, likewise in this regard, Midoriya has way more in common with Endeavor.

  • @dekuisagreatmaincharacter
    @dekuisagreatmaincharacter ปีที่แล้ว +31

    We’re finally starting to see more of Deku and Bakugo’s shared history. It really gets good next episode, but for now, we can get more of an idea of their relationship. Genius Montana already predicted that Bakugo’s behavior has a lot to do with insecurity, and that one short flashback reinforces this. Bakugo saw Deku as little more than “a pebble at the side of the road” for how beneath him he was. But suddenly that pebble has an amazing Quirk and even got a slightly higher score than him on the ball throw. That’s gotta be confusing.
    As a consolation prize, it looked like the writers let him name this episode.
    He may not look like it, but Aizawa is also a huge troll with his “rational deception”. But also, there are some complexities about Aizawa I’d like to highlight:
    All Might points out that Aizawa once expelled a whole class, and that he’s merciless with those he deems without potential. However, if you look back on the previous episode, Aizawa announced the last place would be expelled after the students said his test looked fun. And when confronted by All Might, he has this to say:
    _“There’s nothing crueler than letting a dream end midway.”_
    It really seems that, behind his cold and rational exterior, he is concerned. Those who watched season 5 must know where that concern comes from. It’s a small detail, but one I really appreciate. MHA actually had a lot of thought and planning behind it, and this early characterization for Aizawa is an example of that.
    For the first time in a while, maybe ever, Deku managed to make some friends. Iida grew to respect him, and Uraraka was nice to him from the beginning. It’s also kinda adorable how she thought his name was Deku since that’s how Bakugo called him.
    I wrote a whole explanation on the meaning behind the name “Deku”, but it seems people have already explained it for me. That’s good. I find it all too cool to not know about because of the dub.
    I LOVE the amount of thought out in the worldbuilding of this series. Not only in the big places, but also the small details, like clarifying that the students of the hero course still have regular classes besides heroics. Many people like to use the word “realistic” to praise this sort of thing, but I hate using this word to discuss fiction, so we’re just saying that a lot of thought went into it. If we have to have an adjective, let’s use the word “verisimilar” instead of “realistic”, shall we? That implies an appearance of truth and authenticity instead of being true to real life, so I much prefer it.
    Everyone’s costumes are great. But to no one’s surprise, Deku’s is my personal favorite. The design is nothing special (yet), but what I love is the fact that it was based on All Might and made by his mother. So in a way, Deku is carrying two of the most important people in his life with him when he wears his costume.
    And showing further growth, he’s no longer scared of Bakugo. He’s nervous, sure, but he doesn’t let himself be intimidated by him anymore, which is all the more jarring to Bakugo.
    And of course they would face each other in the first battle exercise. As Uraraka noted, it’s “a fated battle between men”.
    We also get some insight on Deku’s feelings about Bakugo. Despite how much he is mistreated by him, Deku admires him. He’s strong, capable and just as determined to become a hero as himself. So despite his nervousness, Deku wants to defeat him, even if he still can’t use One For All very well at all.
    But even without OFA, Deku is a force to be reckoned with. Him judo-flipping Bakugo isn’t just very cathartic, it once again shows his strengths beyond his Quirk. He’s been observing and studying heroes all his life in preparation to become one. And Bakugo he observed closer than anyone.
    And to further drive the point home that he won’t be his punching bag anymore, Deku declares that the nickname Bakugo gave him to berate him will no longer mean that to him. It’ll mean that he’s capable.
    God, I love this series.

    Everyone else explained the different interpretations is Izuku's nickname.
    I love that he hated it all his life because of the meaning others applied to it, but the minute Uraraka said she liked it, Deku loved his nickname. He is so smitten.

When he gets up to something the guys don't have to whiteknight and spot him, the girls show just how capable they really are by detecting and stopping whatever he is up to themselves, and then usually exacting vengeance for good measure. He creates low stakes intense emotional moments that reveal a LOT about our characters and their abilities very quickly.

    he doesn't get a lot of sleep thats why we first encounter him in his clothes, in a sleeping bag on the floor with a juice :P
    he is in a way the exact opposite from All might who roars at the world and screams at it to face him.
    Aizawa prefers to stay as unknown as possible, the second the criminal is aware of him, he's already restrained without any powers..

    My take on “why Bakugo hates Midoriya”. Things make sense if you look at it as Bakugo is mad at Midoriya for making for of him when he’s worked so hard to get where he is, constantly, much of their lives. From the outside we know this to not be true. The fact that they call each other by first name and not last, with nicknames no less, shows they are very close childhood friends. Midoriya’s is more sincere, Bakugo’s is a bit more perverse seeing as turned the first name-nickname into an insult. Midoriya follows Bakugo around because Bakugo is his goal, he wants to be just like him. Bakugo has been praised his entire life for his quirk so he’s become quite prideful regarding it, and he does work hard to boot- not the insane level Midorya does, but still. Bakugo doesn’t want to just succeed, he wants be distinguished, stand out. Bakugo sees everything Midoriya does as an insult to his pride, not the flattery it actually is. Likewise, Midoriya doesn’t seem to get why Bakugo is insulted. This kind’a highlights the underlying communication problem they have with each other. To not only be the only student from their class to get into a UA, but to be the only one to even apply stands out, but Midorya applied when he has not only a low chance of being a hero, but zero chance- why? Must be to cheapen his attempt to get into UA. If Midoriya has a powerful quirk, why did he present to be so weak and hang out with him- must be to make fun of all of his hard work. I think Bakugo cannot understand Midoya’s actions so he projects his own reasoning on it. The funny this is, Bakugo is probably just as intelligent as Midoriya, but when Midoriya is around he gets so angry he can’t think straight. Anyone, that is how I’ve come to see it because it explains their interactions. And their interactions is one of the highlights for me. I want to see how they resolve things long term. Which reminds me, I think I’m 2 seasons behind the release at this point. These are my two cents; your opinion may vary.

    Alright! So now this is where Deku truly becomes his name and not Izuku! At least in terms of the fandom. He just owns the name! So, the name means two things and it is interpreted differently depending how it’s read. “I can do it” and “worthless.” (VERRRRY rough translation. I'm hardly fluent in Japanese) Sadly for Deku, you can tell how everyone reads it based on their reaction whenever he says his name. It makes a LOT of people uncomfortable. Rightfully so. The name really skews his self-worth in the name. Even if it’s a source of encouragement from Uraraka who actually helped him leave his bullied name. Which obviously means A LOT to Deku. In 3 short gestures, this girl has done more for him and his self-worth than the entire cast combined. And that doesn’t change even when people proper get their personalities developed.
    I LOVE that these costumes both work in various ways and also don’t. These kids JUST got their costumes and don’t have everything figured out about not just how they want to look, but also the functionality of their costumes. Which DOES matter in this show. Deku’s costume does look silly and it is impractical too. It is basically just to show he knows what he wants to look like and why, but doesn’t have ANYTHING else. He wants to be All-Might. And they take no time destroying it so he looks cooler being himself, because he isn’t All-Might. That’s a goal out of his reach for now. At least we know green is ABSOLUTELY his color. Just from a design perspective. I mean even All-Might is just internally going “please no.” Which is also great.
    Just by design, Uraraka may not have been specific, but her costume is actually awesome. Almost like a space suit. Pink is also her total color. I think the heels are a BIT much. I think they have something to do with making her less nauseous through some type of padding, but why is that an option on an incredibly active job. At least Deku isn’t the only one with costume issues.
    Iida is wearing a full suit of armor with exhaust pipes. Probably speed protection/minimizing wind resistance...while wearing armor. And just the very idea of Iida being so totally flabbergasted by lying being immoral to him just makes that stick even bigger. (And god, is it funny) At least Iida is also trying his best to improve on the misunderstandings and loosening on Deku. But imagining someone like Iida being a villain is basically like thinking of Magneto being thwarted by a wooden gun. (If you have never seen it, look it up. It’s OLD TIMEY superhero cartoon and it spells the rest)
    For Bakugo the wrists are basically water tanks. So, imagine them like Goku’s training weights... you know, when they mattered. But there is another note. And I’ll make it VERY clear. (Not condescending but this show REALLY explores what it means to be rivals.) Deku and Bakugo are NOT rivals. Deku is the victim and Bakugo is the bully. You can’t be rivals without mutual respect. And Bakugo has a grand total of NO respect for Deku. When it comes to Bakugo you can tell what this guy has stuck up his ego all over. It’s control, and it’s strength, and when he doesn’t have either, he is scared/threatened. Take your pick depending on the situation. Deku out of NOWHERE now has the power to not just match him, but to match him with ONE FINGER. And for Bakugo that has to be THE most terrifying loss of control. I hate making this analogy, but we can be scared of bugs that have no ability to harm us, because of how they look or act. But if they suddenly gained the power to match us, you have no choice but to address it. That is Bakugo’s perspective and NO ONE ELSE’S because no one knew he was quirkless but him. He does have to deal with it, but when you’re so used to being in charge and control, that takes a LOT to let the true vulnerability appear even if it’s obvious through the anger cover. The right way to think about anger is it is a cover of emotions you don’t want to feel and have no real way to address it. Anger is almost never pure. It’s pretty 1-note for now and that makes Bakugo PRETTY annoying.
    Aizawa is the kind of person who is a pure realist. When he saw Deku lessen the damage from a full limb to just a finger, that is maybe 1/10th of the previous damage. 1/30th if you include the other limbs he shattered against the other robots. And then he powered through the rest of the tests despite the pain! That was so much improvement all at once he couldn’t justify sending him home after that. And while it seems so obvious that Aizawa wouldn’t, that doesn’t mean he couldn’t and if given more reason he would have. This school has unlimited budget and gives the teachers a TON of authority to teach as they feel the need to. Whether with expelling authority, or with the power to have to read a script because you can’t remember all the details of the class you personally designed. Looking more and more like All-Might does not have a teaching license.
    There’s a bit of a running theme of people not believing in him until OFA gets involved. And the ONLY person exempt from that so far is Uraraka. Inko Midoriya is an awesome mom but she did fail her son in that one moment. And for her to only come back in believing in him only AFTER he gets OFA to celebrate something he couldn’t accomplish without it is low key terrible for Deku. Because he KNOWS that. Low self-esteem in this scenario has to be so completely derailing for how he’s treated only AFTER he demonstrates power. For him to be as awesome as he is this show thus far and to not have any self-confidence is just AWFUL. At least he is already fulfilling his promise and protecting Uraraka as the first thing he does. And having the save first fight after mentality is PERFECT for a hero. And she’s no damsel either. He just did it anyways to not risk it. And we also get to see Deku stand up to Bakugo for the 1st time and it is of course for her sake. He took NO TIME taking his title as hero and getting comfortable with it.

    I'm not sure why so many people think Aizawa lied about expelling whoever took last place. He was very serious about it and the conversation between All Might and himself says as much. Aizawa changed his mind because although Deku took last place, he ended up showing potential when Aizawa thought he had none. I think it means so much more to realize that he *is* ruthless about things like expulsion for students who lack promise, and yet he changed his mind about Deku after he managed to find a quick and creative (temporary) solution to his bleak situation. It makes me a little sad when people gloss over that because they miss some of the impact of the episode.

      Bakugo. At this point in the story Bakugo put more forethought and effort into his costume design. Black face paint under the eyes helps keep light out of his eyes. Thick gloves to make his hand sweat. Several ways to store and utilize his sweat outside of his basic quirk use. Even his boots and knee guards look like they'd keep him from hurting his leg joints during his high impact fighting style. High boots that are tight on the ankles keep you from rolling them. Knee pads protect your knees from fast falls. Both are used in combat situations by the military.

      @@jarvisfowlkes3200 you’ve misunderstood, he’s physically strong for a normal kid his age without his quirk i.e he can do more physically than those characters I mentioned who equally can’t use their quirks to boost their performance during the test like Hagakure, her quirk is always in use but doesn’t help her in the tests at all. Example the Dynamometer, Deku would have better grip strength than say Hagakure so he wouldn’t have come last in that test particularly as we have seen that Deku for the past year has been strengthening his grip strength and that event came before he used OFA.
      While we don’t know all the test results we do know that Deku got a faster time than Uraraka in the speed test and threw further than Bakugo in the ball throw test so there’s 2 tests we know he wouldn’t have been last in. I never understood why so many ppl that don't like fan service in anime or video games, etc. have no problem with female artists like Megan Thee Stallion and often they dont have problems with male artists using women in a provocative way in music videos/performances and the same goes for gay artists being provocative and using men and women in the same way.
    Video games and anime aren't real ppl. You could make the case that the entertainment industry or the artists themselves are exploiting ppl sexually. Yet somehow thats fine and in certain cases encouraged (usually for female or gay artists as long as they "own it" even tho that doesn't mean anything since it could be all a performance and often is). And even if you disagree and think there is no exploitation, still what makes anime/videogame fan service worse than actual ppl fan service?
    I totally get the complaint some ppl have about underage fan service. I am just talking about fan service in general.

He handles all of these things well because he has the kindest momma ever. But kids need both male and female role models in order to be emotionally healthy.
