I hated him at first but he's in my top 5 characters. I actually like him.even more than shoto. As the series progress we see him being slapped into reality that there are people better than him (Like, that’s literally what happens in the 8th episode). Then he grows and actually gains a friend he sees as an equal (Kirishima). There’s so much more between and after what I just said it’d probably take a whole essay.

The dub for this anime is really good, so it's normal that even a good translation has to change something to reach a similar effect on the target public. Just a short explanation around the name Deku. 出久 --> This is how you write IZUKU (his name) but these two kanji that form the name can be also read as DEKU (Kanji have different spelling, it depends on the combination). Kacchan call him DEKU for that reason, but he uses it in a negative way because there is a word that is homophone 木偶 and it's read DEKU too. It's this word that means useless/good for nothing. When Uraraka said "The name Deku gives the impression of ‘You can do it" was weird because how デク (DEKU writtend in katakana) for her could remind the word 頑張れ (which means you can do it/do your best and it's read ganbare). It has been speculated that it's because デク can reminds of the verb 出来る (you read it "DEKIRU" which means "to be able to do something). デク doesn't really mean anything once you translate it. It can be confusing even in Japanese, but it still gives that kind of "feeling" (of being able to do anything if you work for it) as Uraraka said. It's still nice that Midoriya threw at Kacchan this old name Bakugou always used to mock him, into something that actually means good. ^^ I can't wait to watch the reaction for the episodes to come, it's gonna be fun!

The biggest event that cause Bakugo the way he is were the people around him when his quirk had appeared. Basically they all praises his awesome quirk especially at such a yong age (I blame those kindergarden staffs) which he became to grown an ego and a superiority complex soon after especially when deku try to help him when he fallen to the ground.
A deku is a wooden figurine. Try googling "wooden deku" to see what I mean. Bakugou's use of the name Deku can basically be translated as "blockhead". On the other hand, Ochako's misunderstanding comes from a wordplay of the verb "dekimasu" which means "to be able to". Japanese verbs bend in two ways. Dekimasu is a type 2 verb and its base form is "dekiru". Instead, if it were a type 1 verb its base form would be "deku". Japanese people love wordplays, so Ochako expecting Deku's name to be a wordplay is rather natural.
Bakugou is seriously my favorite character. Not because I think he's sympathetic or a good guy... but because he's fucking CRAZY! Seriously, I don't remember seeing such a great rival that manages to make the hero shake in his boots. Despite his brutish attitude, he's still a hard worker and a real threat.
Marketa's similar to Tenya in that they outwardly project morality but she also got his character flaws. A desire to control and regulate behavior and the season 2 thematic developments--I can't say what they are. She ain't no angel, that's a devouring mother. If she deems you a "dangerous predator" to her "children" even if you're not, she will enjoy seeing you ripped to pieces.
Nobody never says this but from my point of view there is ONE reason that makes me understand Bakugo: If you have someone all your childhood hanging with you,even after you make clear that you DON'T like this person,you will eventually hate him. There are other reasons,but this is one that is never brought up. I had someone like that in high school and I fuckin hated him

We get more on Bakugo and Midoriya's backstory/friendship derailment soon. And yes, Bakugo came up with the 'Deku' nickname by separating a kanji from Izuku Midoriya's name that can be applied to the word "Useless/can't do anything" so, in turn, he put the label on him. In the scene with Midoriya talking to Iida and Ochaco, she states (in sub) that she likes the name 'Deku' because it sounds like the deku in the phrase "you can do it/I can do it" in Japanese (Dekimasu). It doesn't make sense with the English phrase so it just sounds like a random name-call from Bakugo but its actually a pretty clever (but totally mean) association. In this episode when Deku throws Bakugo over his shoulder, he tells him DUB "From this day on Deku is the name of a hero!" In the SUB it is translated "My 'Deku' means I can do it" Both lines are cool in that they turn a negative experience into a positive, with the latter actually reversing 'useless/can't do anything" into "Yes, I can" :) I'm kind of simplifying it and probably not one hundred percent correct in terminology but its something very along those lines. Great reactions guys! I need more! Incidentally, from here on out the series' hype intensifies! :D

Woo the double upload made my day! Also, I'm sure everyone said it already, but "Deku" is more of a Japanese pun that they left out in English, that really added to the impact of Izuku's defiance. A part of Izuku's name, a character is "Deku" which means "useless", which is what Kacchan/Katsuki Bakugou called him for years. But Ochaco Uraraka/floaty girl read into that "Deku" nickname as being derived from the phrase "You can do it!" which is more motivational and positive. It's not just "Hey it sounds cute!" lol So you can interpret what Izuku shouted at the end of the episode, originally, as "My 'Deku' won't always mean 'useless'! Few things I would like to say:- 1. You seemed to have noticed the feel good aspect of the show. The creator of the MHA, Horikoshi Kohei, has stated in an interview that he started MHA when his previous manga was cancelled and he was feeling down so he wanted to write something that would bring out positivity in him. This is actually something some people praise about the show. As when the western superhero franchises were trying to see who goes darker, a genuine feel good superhero show was just what was needed. Although warning there are dark aspects of mha coming. 2. I am glad one of you is also watching the sub. I have no problems with the dubbed version but one of the top reasons I prefer sub is because there are some things that get lost in translation. 3. I love the fact that you guys are already finding characters you like. One of the top reasons I love MHA is because there are different characters that different people can love and almost everyone gets a good dose of character development. 4. Lastly I love the fact that you are warming up to Iida. He is a character that comes off wrong at first but is one of the best character in the series.
Actually bakugo is angry with him because his pride, that borned thanks to all the praise he received while he was a Child because of how talented he was and also because of the great quirk he have. This all snowballed and make him the ball of pride he's now, even though he's not truly a bad guy, he's a d*ck but he won't actually kill someone or steal something BECAUSE of that pride. To Bakugou deku is that existence that is his complete opposite, weak, without quirk, without any outstanding talent, so to kacchan deku is the one thing that makes him, the prodigy, stand out more when being compared. But, since deku now has a quirk, and is actively opposing him he's a treat to his pride, make him, a genius, not look that special.
Despite the obvious parallels between All-Might and Captain America, I never thought about the parallels between Deku and Captain America until yall mentioned it.
Sadly it was really difficult to translate the context of the kanji meanings of the names. Although yeah it really diminishes the plot relevance of Deku's hero name choice. I would have preferred if they had noted the whole useless meaning and just put annotations on the japanese letter meanings

On the other hand, Ochako's misunderstanding comes from a wordplay of the verb "dekimasu" which means "to be able to". Japanese verbs bend in two ways. Dekimasu is a type 2 verb and its base form is "dekiru". Instead, if it were a type 1 verb its base form would be "deku". Japanese people love wordplays, so Ochako expecting Deku's name to be a wordplay is rather natural.
Bakugou is seriously my favorite character. Not because I think he's sympathetic or a good guy... but because he's fucking CRAZY! Seriously, I don't remember seeing such a great rival that manages to make the hero shake in his boots. Despite his brutish attitude, he's still a hard worker and a real threat.
Marketa's similar to Tenya in that they outwardly project morality but she also got his character flaws. A desire to control and regulate behavior and the season 2 thematic developments--I can't say what they are. She ain't no angel, that's a devouring mother. If she deems you a "dangerous predator" to her "children" even if you're not, she will enjoy seeing you ripped to pieces.

If you have someone all your childhood hanging with you,even after you make clear that you DON'T like this person,you will eventually hate him. There are other reasons,but this is one that is never brought up. I had someone like that in high school and I fuckin hated him

We get more on Bakugo and Midoriya's backstory/friendship derailment soon. And yes, Bakugo came up with the 'Deku' nickname by separating a kanji from Izuku Midoriya's name that can be applied to the word "Useless/can't do anything" so, in turn, he put the label on him. In the scene with Midoriya talking to Iida and Ochaco, she states (in sub) that she likes the name 'Deku' because it sounds like the deku in the phrase "you can do it/I can do it" in Japanese (Dekimasu). It doesn't make sense with the English phrase so it just sounds like a random name-call from Bakugo but its actually a pretty clever (but totally mean) association.
In this episode when Deku throws Bakugo over his shoulder, he tells him DUB "From this day on Deku is the name of a hero!" In the SUB it is translated "My 'Deku' means I can do it" Both lines are cool in that they turn a negative experience into a positive, with the latter actually reversing 'useless/can't do anything" into "Yes, I can" :) I'm kind of simplifying it and probably not one hundred percent correct in terminology but its something very along those lines. Great reactions guys! I need more! Incidentally, from here on out the series' hype intensifies! :D

Also, I'm sure everyone said it already, but "Deku" is more of a Japanese pun that they left out in English, that really added to the impact of Izuku's defiance. A part of Izuku's name, a character is "Deku" which means "useless", which is what Kacchan/Katsuki Bakugou called him for years. But Ochaco Uraraka/floaty girl read into that "Deku" nickname as being derived from the phrase "You can do it!" which is more motivational and positive. It's not just "Hey it sounds cute!" lol
So you can interpret what Izuku shouted at the end of the episode, originally, as "My 'Deku' won't always mean 'useless'! It means 'I can do it!' today!". ouo

There is so much hype shit coming.
Few things I would like to say:-
1. You seemed to have noticed the feel good aspect of the show. The creator of the MHA, Horikoshi Kohei, has stated in an interview that he started MHA when his previous manga was cancelled and he was feeling down so he wanted to write something that would bring out positivity in him. This is actually something some people praise about the show. As when the western superhero franchises were trying to see who goes darker, a genuine feel good superhero show was just what was needed. Although warning there are dark aspects of mha coming.
2. I am glad one of you is also watching the sub. I have no problems with the dubbed version but one of the top reasons I prefer sub is because there are some things that get lost in translation.
3. I love the fact that you guys are already finding characters you like. One of the top reasons I love MHA is because there are different characters that different people can love and almost everyone gets a good dose of character development.
4. Lastly I love the fact that you are warming up to Iida. He is a character that comes off wrong at first but is one of the best character in the series.
No matter how many times I watch these, the hype rebuilds lol

Actually bakugo is angry with him because his pride, that borned thanks to all the praise he received while he was a Child because of how talented he was and also because of the great quirk he have. This all snowballed and make him the ball of pride he's now, even though he's not truly a bad guy, he's a d*ck but he won't actually kill someone or steal something BECAUSE of that pride. To Bakugou deku is that existence that is his complete opposite, weak, without quirk, without any outstanding talent, so to kacchan deku is the one thing that makes him, the prodigy, stand out more when being compared. But, since deku now has a quirk, and is actively opposing him he's a treat to his pride, make him, a genius, not look that special.
Despite the obvious parallels between All-Might and Captain America, I never thought about the parallels between Deku and Captain America until yall mentioned it.

I really don’t like how they changed what Ochako said about Deku’s name to being “cute” since the original line has plot relevance.
Sadly it was really difficult to translate the context of the kanji meanings of the names. Although yeah it really diminishes the plot relevance of Deku's hero name choice. I would have preferred if they had noted the whole useless meaning and just put annotations on the japanese letter meanings

You guys were too busy screaming during the costume reveal but you missed Ochaco saying that she didn't specify not to maker her costume a bodysuit so the company made it a body suit based off her designs and filled in the blanks with what they thought made most sense.
Also you'll understand why Yaoyozu (the girl with real big dark hair) has an extremely revealing costume.
