Getting your driver's license when you're older can be intimidating, but as Nike says: "Just Do it!"
Acknowledge the fear and do it anyway. Know that you may take driver education classes with teenage students.
If you plan the work however, getting to your ultimate goal of getting your license is going to be relatively straight forward.
And finally, if you're purchasing a vehicle, ensure that the vehicle works for you.

To everyone on this thread, I'm almost 45 and passed my G test today! I had to overcome a TON of anxiety to do this, it took a lot of time and patience but I did it and wanted to let everyone know you CAN do this to! Don't give up. Be consistent and committed to learning and growing through this experience. Don't be embarrassed either based on age, its never too late to learn a new skill. You're pushing yourself to grow, its amazing. Be proud. Keep at it, you'll get there! Good luck.

I'm 45 years old and for the 4th time, will be taking my permit test (I passed the last one but wasn't able to complete my lessons due to Covid). What freaks me out is that I am extremely embarrassed to be seen by people who don't know that I can't drive. I'm also terrified. Lessons are also expensive (I live in a city with decent transit and most of my friends don't have cars). But I understand there is no excuse. Not driving is holding me back from so many opportunities.

I passed my driver's test! I finally got my license at age 26! It feels so amazing to accomplish a goal I had for 10 years! Don't let the fear get to you! Practice, practice, practice! I'm not sure all states do this, but having a practice run/check in before you do your real test was a huge help!! You can do it! :)

I’m turning 29 I been struggling with anxiety and I’m pushing myself to drive this year I took the written test and failed but made another appointment I’m not giving up and going to remain positive 🤗thank you for you informative videos

Aweee I’m 37 taking lessons right now it’s a lot but I’m pushing my anxiety out the way an doing the damn thing it’s very scary but I said I’m working on being a confident driver fear will not defeat me this year!!
Same in 29 too and I really want to get my license so bad
I'm 28 and I did get my permit earlier this year and will be having a road test next month.

It isn’t too late for anyone to get it. I got my learners when I was a teenager, I ended up renewing it 10 times and after lessons (formal & informal/binge watching this channel and doing the cones incessantly), along with several unsuccessful attempts at the road test, spread over 20 yrs, last month (after rescheduling my test from April due to COVID) I passed and I couldn’t be happier.
Never give up on your dreams of getting your driver’s licence because it will happen.

Hallie, I took my 5th lesson today. I am in my 60s. It's not as difficult as I thought it would be, and the more you drive the more confident you will become. You can do this.
I am 34 years old and I am from Wisconsin. I had my road test yesterday December 10, 2020 and I passed!!! I only had one point taken off otherwise I would’ve had a perfect score. I wanted to come share the news because once I got my permit and was learning how to drive these TH-cam videos really helped me out tremendously. I am a very anxious person and that’s why it took me until now, to get my license. I just wanted to thank you so much for all the wonderful information you put out on TH-cam. I would highly recommend these videos to anyone learning ♥️

Just moved from NYC to Massachusetts. I'm 29 and just got my license. 1 month later I'm driving very first car. I'm still very nervous but it gets easier as time goes by.
I love this video! It’s the truth. I got my permit when I was 17 and didn’t get my license to this summer at age 30. I was SOOO afraid but I made up in my mind that it was something that I had to do! I prayed to God to help me get past the fear and stepped out on faith. I had to put action behind my faith, I signed up for drivers Ed once at age 27 but chickened out when it was time to get on the road. But this year at age 30 I signed up again and stuck with it. The key is to find a good instructor, I had to change driving instructors and the second teacher was a perfect match. I didn’t care how long it took for me to learn, I knew I was going to need more than the standard 6 hours that came with the package . I ended up having to have 12 hours of training. And as Rick stated in the video, you must be consistent with the training. I was scheduling my sessions 2 days out of the week for 2 hours each and didn’t miss a session. And also what he said about getting a car that you’re comfortable in is very good advice! I wish I purchased a more comfortable car but instead I got a sports car with blind spots. I was much more comfortable in the drivers Ed car. But nevertheless I say all that to say this, IF I CAN DO IT, YOU CAN TOO!!!

I'm 41 and just got my license for the first time last week. I grew in NYC and never learned to drive. I've been living in Colombia for almost 7 years and I live slightly outside of a major city so I decided it was time to get a car. Just got my car yesterday and Im really excited about driving and going on road trips with friends.

I just turned 50 and will take my road test in January. I had about 30 hours of driving lessons in a manual car which is common in Danmark.

Hi Anders Albrechtsen - thank you my friend. The failure rate is high if the student doesn't take some form of driver training. If the student takes professional driving instruction and practices, than the failure rate is less than 6%. All the best, Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest I agree it definitely helps with a trained driving instructor. In my country it is mandatory to have 16 hours with a trained driving instructor before taking a driving test. But most students have at least 30 before their driving test. Even then the failure rate is relatively high in some areas especially in the larger cities.

I am a seasoned driver ( yes that means older). I wanted to upgrade my license to a class 4 in Kelowna BC. I found your videos very helpful. I was able to get 100% on my knowledge test. My first road test I failed. I then took your advice and booked into a driving school and had a 90 minute brush up. The instructor was amazing and gave me very valuable advice. I practiced hard and passed my class 4 road test the second time round. Money well spent. Thank you Rick, I feel I know you personally because of all the videos I watched. You are very good at what you do.

Now I've been embarrassed about not having a driver's license for like a while now and I glad I'm not the only one trying to get a license as an older adult. It's truly embarrassing not to not have a driver's license as an older adult. But whenever I get behind the wheel I get nervous I'll tell you that for sure. But I want to change that.

THANK YOU for this. Its not often we hear this is the "norm" and not the exception. This experience of getting my license at an older age has taught me that growth and learning new things never ends! Its part of our life journey and its never too late to learn a new skill. I plan to book my highway test once drive centers re-open in my city (they're currently shut down due to the pandemic, as are my lessons with my instructor). Be relentless in your efforts and never give up!!!

@@smartdrivetest I'm in Toronto. Instructor lessons and driving tests are cancelled due to another shut down. My instructor mentioned that if driving tests are cancelled due to the shut down, the instructors aren't permitted to teach either. This has been since November! Still waiting.
I passed today after taking the test twice at 41 yrs old. The first I failed miserably and it put me into a bad depression. I wanted to give up. Luckily I have people pressing me not to give up and I passed!

I heard of someone who started driving lessons at age 33(economic reasons) who got held responsible for an accident in the final stages of preparing for the practical driving exam.
He only took it up after realizing that urbanization, the working commute and the spirit of dependency on others
when he didn't feel like bussing or taxiing around became increasingly problematic.

I had my first driving lessons when I was 55 a discouraging remark by my instructor made me quit i am now 59 and hoping to have some lessons again anyway the remark by the instructor is i should know what to do after just 3 lessons i would appreciate some advice

And no, after 3 lessons, students won't always know what to do...especially since driving is so dynamic. The other piece about driving is that you may only encounter the same traffic situation every 10 lessons. My counsel is to find an instructor that works with senior drivers. thanks for making this video... i decided to get my license back after 20yrs... the roads/rules/laws and cars, people have really changed since the 80/90s...
i was very afraid but passed my theory test and have my full license with condition must have supervisor til i pass the driving test...
i practice in my nissan campervan(just getting that had its ups and downs) and have private lessons...
ok there is times when i feel over whelmed and i want to give up but i havent...
the freedom i feel getting out of my little box and drive to the forest

Really good video Rick and if you are wondering for those older drivers in the state of New Jersey there is no passenger and hour restrictions on permit but restrictions on hand-held electronic devices stays supervised driving it's only 3 months before the road test if below 21 6 months

I'm 28 and my roadtest is in april and I've had my permit since I was 21 and finally in a position to get my liscense some life been practicing as much as possible my fiance has been there to always drive me and our baby wherever but we most likely are about to move so I need to get it now so I can be able to have freedom to go anytime anyplace

My mom is in her 40s and she failed her driving test twice.. Now she really feels bad but she tries to hold it and says it’s fine it was never for me :( 💔

I’m 22 and have major driving anxiety. This isn’t only embarrassing that I don’t have a license but inconvenient since I live in the suburbs. I failed my road test the first time and once got a fender bender and another time a flat tire. I was starting to make progress until the pandemic happened and I haven’t been able to make progress since. Any advice on overcoming this fear and becoming a safe, responsible driver would be super appreciated.

Good video! I am 28 years old. Haven not. driven in a while, but when I was 18 and 19, I did some driver's ed. Now, taking that Into consideration, would it be a good idea to start with a Tesla this time around? The seat, the steering wheel, and the mirrors are so easy to customize for the driver. Therefore, I believe I would have a much more comfortable time reaching the steering wheel and the pedals.
Hey Rick, I'm a 63 year old driving instructor, watch and refer your channel and site as a business tool. I'm finding more and more senior students taking lessons for retesting. Sometimes I find myself working to convince these students they have to break certain habits they've developed, not easy LOL. Also I noticed you drive an older CRV, I drive a 06 Acura MDX and travel from Tweed ON to Kingston, it's not part of the coriculum but does older vehicle ownership and maintenance enter in to your teaching?

I just turned 37 and occasionally wonder if I should try getting my license and overcoming my anxiety, but they force us to take the driver's test a year after the permit in the state where I live, and I'd probably need a therapy-driven plan that would take longer than a year. I'm guessing getting my license would cost about 8-15K+ now between classes and everything else, which is a tall order in this economy. It would likely take me at least 100 hours with an instructor. I have such poor spatial awareness that I constantly give myself bruises from walking into things, and I'm not sure that me controlling a several-ton object would be a great idea. I struggle with wondering if the shame I feel is justified or if I'm allowing others to peer pressure me into throwing money at a bad decision.

I'm 23 and have failed 3 times so far on my road test:( I feel so stupid. The first time I failed was simply because of my nerves, second time was because I hesitated at the intersection and the instructor said that were not the case she would have passed me, third time was because the instructor made me go through a school zone and I kept trying to watch my speed and went a little bit over and he failed me. I go back again for my 4th attempt the 15 th of this month and I'm terrified I'm gonna fail again. I've practiced and practiced. I just want to pass the test already.

I am age 41 learning how to drive. I have a road test appointment this coming Friday, April 22nd at noon. I wanted to learn using a legitamate driving school. I recommend an actual driving school to learn from a professional driving instructor. I pray to pass my road test and get my probationary auto license upgrade. I want my license! I have to practice on my own for at least a year.

I need to know is it necessary to get your permit before the license after 30 yrs old ?? I had my permit when I was 23 living in Florida but ended up moving back to NYC and never got my license because I never needed it there. I have so many mixed messages about not needing a permit and needing one. PS I live in Houston Texas now.

the question i have is this: in IN you need 40h of supervised driving and 10h at night, but nobody in my family or friends is willing to do it (too busy, or just don't have faith in me aka waiting for me to "grow out of wanting to drive") how should i go about getting my 50h?
I'm in Illinois and that's not even a requirement. All you need is permit then you can go for road test when your ready
