I passed my test today! 1st time too. I've had my learner's permit for 14 years and I finally went for my test after such a long time. Even though I've had it for that long, up until 2 weeks ago I hadn't driven in 2 years and before that maybe 5. Praise the Lord and to Mr. August for all the important information and advice on his channel.

Let me tell you an interesting story. I got my license at 18 in the South, moved up North for school and drove seldomly over the next ten years (big city living). Anyways, I got 5 36in pylons, found a quiet parking lot nearby a large park and did many of the suggested maneuvers. I started out trying to drive as close as possible to the cones forwards and backwards without hitting them. Then I progressed to turns and soon after I did parallel parking. Around this time a husband and wife walked up to me, thinking I was the driving instructor and said "oh, I'm teaching my daughter how to drive. I'm actually coming back in 45 minutes." He did return with his daughter and they started practicing parallel parking with paint buckets. I'm not a greedy guy so I said jump in and use the pylons; we can rotate like we're at the gym using dumbbells. What's the worst that can happen? You hit the pylon it falls over and you take a second to go over what went well and why things went sideways. My technique immediately improved. No joke, I went from not being able to judge how far cars were on my passenger's side to driving down narrow two-way streets and reversing into the narrowest parking space I have ever seen in my parking garage. The pictures I took were hilarious. Seriously, so narrow that I had to limbo and side-step my way out of the vehicle even though I was dead-center between the yellow lines. The parking space was 100 inches wide including the yellow lines. 91 inches between them. Yeah. Mirrors! Mirrors! Mirrors! It turns out the gentleman I met has owned a chauffeur company for over a quarter century. Before we parted ways the last drill we did was zig-zag in between the pylons forwards and backwards. We pushed it like those police EVOC training videos--well maybe not THAT fast but we were definitely not idling through the zig-zag by any means. I would have uploaded my own video were my phone camera not so crappy. I say all this to say that practicing with cones single-handedly made me a better driver in a really short time ( a week). Then I attended a driver's ed course where I learned how to drive stick shift. And again, Smart Drive Test literally came through in the clutch and taught me what to expect. Same thing with winter driving. I grew up in the South. I literally drove on snow for the first time in my life last week. This is absolutely phenomenal. I learned how to drive from freaking TH-cam. Are you kidding me??? Anyways, mirror signal shoulder check and good luck to everybody else learning how to drive.

@@smartdrivetest I grew up in Florida. No snow down there, haha. Interestingly enough, parallel parking was not on my driving exam when I took it circa 2007. Now that I live in Chicago and am getting ready to purchase a car (thinking standard transmission), I definitely couldn't shrug off parallel parking. Practicing with cones seemed like the safest most logical way to learn. Strangely I never saw that suggestion anywhere else. Either way, glad I came across your channel, the material's top-notch and what it did for me it can certainly do for the lot of us. Appreciate all the time you've invested.

I PASSED 1ST TRY!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR VIDEOS. I put off getting my license for 7 years and it was one of my biggest fears. I used my eye condition as an excuse for not getting it. But I passed with almost no errors! The one where I did I immediately knew what i did wrong and accidentally blurted out "F**k" lol.

When I saw the title I was thinking about my comment the other day, then you said my name (which you shockingly pronounced perfectly) and I was all OMG no way!! Thanks for the detailed answer to my previous question, this does clarify a lot...and I hope not just for me but also many other subscribers. I wish I had these ideas before because I actually practiced my parking and slow speed maneuvers in a full parking lot and ended up hitting it with another (just the corner a little bit). But I think I learned alot from that too. Tip from my experience so far: 1) Always, always keep checking your mirrors (sides and rear view) especially while youre maneuvering in reverse and have other cars in the parking lot. 2) The key is to start practicing these maneuvers in EXTRA slow speed. SLOW is the key. (Don't follow Ricks expert speed, lol). 3) Some "formulas" are very helpful in learning tricky parking when you just can't get it. I had to learn those for parallel parking and reverse parking and now I can park anywhere perfectly in the first attempt. Could think of these so far! Hope these help too. :)

Gonna be finally learning to drive at 22 and super nervous. Having a single eye made driving daunting, so I've avoided it as long as I can. Here's to hoping the channel helps me get reaquainted with the idea of getting on the road with it.

Hi, I'm a new (older) driver at 35. I've never had the opportunity to learn until now. (I'm a little nervous, but this is long over-due.) Any tips for somebody who lives in a rural area? There are no driving schools (I wish there were, I could use the help) Basically, I have to teach myself. My husband (he's from England, the driving here is very different) is just in the car so I can legally practice. I'm not sure where to start after the parking lot maneuvers.

Rick can you please do a video on how to use your mirrors? Many videos about Adjusting mirrors but no instruction on how to use them. For example pulling up to a curb; aligning your car against the curb or when parking in a parking lot aligning in the centre of the mirrors. Also how to know how far you can back up when a car is behind you or when pulling up behind a car aka those tight parking moments. Thanks

I'd like to know if you have any pointers regarding how to orient the car straight and what to look for(reference points) on the car or your environment to help you keep the car straight(without using the convex mirror - it doesn't seem to help much for us). Do you have any videos explaining when to start stopping at an intersection when the traffic light is red? And also videos on when the should start accelerating when the traffic light is green and you are behind another vehicle? I’m having a difficult time explaining this to my kids

I've had many students I've had to explain this very situation to. They want to go as soon as the light turns green, but you can't go until the vehicle in front goes. I’ve have been explaining space management to both my kids (both have their learners) and the video you recommended speaks the language I’m trying to explain to them. I’m going to show them your recommended video so they can see I’m not the only one saying this. I took them on a drive today, showed them when the can start accelerating when the traffic light turns green, they were able to practice and FINALLY started understanding. I will tell you, it’s much easier instructing new school bus drivers then instructing my own kids how do drive.

@@smartdrivetest Also pitifully I failed the road test recently. If I had practiced these basic exercises, I should have been able to perform better. The examiner told me I got an Auto Fail because when backing, my car partially entered the opposite lane (I vaguely remember maybe 1/4-1/2 of my car width). So I realized one of my weak points is the REVERSING maneuvers, thus I have to practice many many backing (of different types - straight lines, circles, zigzags). Then next time test, suppose the straight backing should never be an issue any longer...
I am okay with everything but the slow manouvers 😳 I didnt practice them enough. oh god. I am going to focus on that for the two hours before my road test. I hope I pass.I don't know why I am so scared to fail. I can take it again in a week if I fail and then Id know what I need to do to pass. I guess now I am 24 and just want to get it no hassle. you know what, I am gonna be positive, I will pass and if for some reason I do not I will brush it off as a learning experience and try again:) even though its not cheap o.o. I had no idea they would make me a 3 point turn o.o will they for sure or is that a depends on the tester and where you are or should I make sure I practice that.

Rick. If you turn left at a light on a four lane highway (and you are in the far left lane you should stay in that same lane once you turn, correct? Should you, without prompting from the tester, move over to the right lane after the turn or stay in the left lane util instructed otherwise? Thank you!

i want u as a driving teacher my first driving teacher didn't show me the knobs and switches behind the wheel and was on his phone some of the time instead of watching the student.

Hi I badly need ur help as i failed my G test twice. I passed my G2 with very good report not a single cross. I have a good driving record. First time I failed bcz i gave test on driving schools car which i drove only twice for 45 mins each before test . Second time i practiced so well on my own car on highway series 400 for 2 months,watched ur each lesson twice and i was confident to be pass this time. But Unfortunately just 2 days before my test, my van not that (car on which i was giving test)had a minor collision at school parking.which disturbed me a lot and i went into anxiety attacks like shortbreathlessness and hot and cold chills with nausea. Luckily insurance call me and told i was not at fault and they are closing my file with no accident history on my record and any increase in premium. But that all affected me a lot and feel unable to drive again.i practice again between the 2 days and went for test but i did so many mistakes like hard braking ,slow speed on turns,sharp lane change once and not following constant speed .means 92 to 96 on highway. I need ur help as i lost all my driving confidence. So much scared from driving.

I have a question! So the town speed limit is 50, I've been driving 40 because I don't feel comfortable driving through neighborhoods at 50km/h. When I get onto the highway I try to go 5km less than the speed limit, is that okay? Or should I be trying to closer to 50 for my test?

That being said, there are many seniors that have vehicles, but don't drive and for an exchange of services may let you use their vehicle. Also, there may be some rental companies that need cars moved around in a parking lot to be washed and cleaned. I am teaching my son how to drive, and I have a navigation system which activates the camera when in reverse. My son often uses this system when putting car in reverse. should I stop him from using it? He often relies on the camera more than he does the mirrors.

I passed my test today! 1st time too. I've had my learner's permit for 14 years and I finally went for my test after such a long time. Let me tell you an interesting story.
I got my license at 18 in the South, moved up North for school and drove seldomly over the next ten years (big city living). Anyways, I got 5 36in pylons, found a quiet parking lot nearby a large park and did many of the suggested maneuvers.
I started out trying to drive as close as possible to the cones forwards and backwards without hitting them. Then I progressed to turns and soon after I did parallel parking.
Around this time a husband and wife walked up to me, thinking I was the driving instructor and said "oh, I'm teaching my daughter how to drive. I'm actually coming back in 45 minutes." He did return with his daughter and they started practicing parallel parking with paint buckets. I'm not a greedy guy so I said jump in and use the pylons; we can rotate like we're at the gym using dumbbells.
What's the worst that can happen? You hit the pylon it falls over and you take a second to go over what went well and why things went sideways.
My technique immediately improved. No joke, I went from not being able to judge how far cars were on my passenger's side to driving down narrow two-way streets and reversing into the narrowest parking space I have ever seen in my parking garage. The pictures I took were hilarious. Seriously, so narrow that I had to limbo and side-step my way out of the vehicle even though I was dead-center between the yellow lines. The parking space was 100 inches wide including the yellow lines. 91 inches between them. Yeah. Mirrors! Mirrors! Mirrors!
It turns out the gentleman I met has owned a chauffeur company for over a quarter century. Before we parted ways the last drill we did was zig-zag in between the pylons forwards and backwards. We pushed it like those police EVOC training videos--well maybe not THAT fast but we were definitely not idling through the zig-zag by any means. I would have uploaded my own video were my phone camera not so crappy.
I say all this to say that practicing with cones single-handedly made me a better driver in a really short time ( a week). Then I attended a driver's ed course where I learned how to drive stick shift. And again, Smart Drive Test literally came through in the clutch and taught me what to expect. Same thing with winter driving. I grew up in the South. I literally drove on snow for the first time in my life last week.
This is absolutely phenomenal. I learned how to drive from freaking TH-cam. Are you kidding me??? Anyways, mirror signal shoulder check and good luck to everybody else learning how to drive.

Interestingly enough, parallel parking was not on my driving exam when I took it circa 2007. Now that I live in Chicago and am getting ready to purchase a car (thinking standard transmission), I definitely couldn't shrug off parallel parking. Practicing with cones seemed like the safest most logical way to learn.
Strangely I never saw that suggestion anywhere else. Either way, glad I came across your channel, the material's top-notch and what it did for me it can certainly do for the lot of us.

I PASSED 1ST TRY!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR VIDEOS. I put off getting my license for 7 years and it was one of my biggest fears. I used my eye condition as an excuse for not getting it. But I passed with almost no errors! The one where I did I immediately knew what i did wrong and accidentally blurted out "F**k" lol.

When I saw the title I was thinking about my comment the other day, then you said my name (which you shockingly pronounced perfectly) and I was all OMG no way!! Thanks for the detailed answer to my previous question, this does clarify a lot...and I hope not just for me but also many other subscribers. I wish I had these ideas before because I actually practiced my parking and slow speed maneuvers in a full parking lot and ended up hitting it with another (just the corner a little bit). But I think I learned alot from that too.
Tip from my experience so far:
1) Always, always keep checking your mirrors (sides and rear view) especially while youre maneuvering in reverse and have other cars in the parking lot.
2) The key is to start practicing these maneuvers in EXTRA slow speed. SLOW is the key. (Don't follow Ricks expert speed, lol).
3) Some "formulas" are very helpful in learning tricky parking when you just can't get it. I had to learn those for parallel parking and reverse parking and now I can park anywhere perfectly in the first attempt.
Could think of these so far!

Hi, I'm a new (older) driver at 35. I've never had the opportunity to learn until now. (I'm a little nervous, but this is long over-due.) Any tips for somebody who lives in a rural area? There are no driving schools (I wish there were, I could use the help) Basically, I have to teach myself. My husband (he's from England, the driving here is very different) is just in the car so I can legally practice. I'm not sure where to start after the parking lot maneuvers.

thank you so much Rick - these look like very fundamental and useful exercises. pitifully my local driving schools don't supply these... any suggestion where I can find some large empty spaces to practice (by myself)? since some areas are private so might not be good to go there... and the pylons/cones - guess I can buy them online easily (e.g. from Amazon ;)?

Rick can you please do a video on how to use your mirrors? Many videos about Adjusting mirrors but no instruction on how to use them. For example pulling up to a curb; aligning your car against the curb or when parking in a parking lot aligning in the centre of the mirrors.
Also how to know how far you can back up when a car is behind you or when pulling up behind a car aka those tight parking moments. Thanks

Do you have any videos explaining when to start stopping at an intersection when the traffic light is red? And also videos on when the should start accelerating when the traffic light is green and you are behind another vehicle? I’m having a difficult time explaining this to my kids

When you're in line and the traffic light goes green, you can't got until the vehicle in front starts moving. I've had many students I've had to explain this very situation to. They want to go as soon as the light turns green, but you can't go until the vehicle in front goes. And for new drivers, you want them slowing 1 block from the intersection. Perhaps not braking, but at least off the throttle.

I’ve have been explaining space management to both my kids (both have their learners) and the video you recommended speaks the language I’m trying to explain to them. I’m going to show them your recommended video so they can see I’m not the only one saying this. I took them on a drive today, showed them when the can start accelerating when the traffic light turns green, they were able to practice and FINALLY started understanding. I will tell you, it’s much easier instructing new school bus drivers then instructing my own kids how do drive.

@@smartdrivetest Also pitifully I failed the road test recently. If I had practiced these basic exercises, I should have been able to perform better. The examiner told me I got an Auto Fail because when backing, my car partially entered the opposite lane (I vaguely remember maybe 1/4-1/2 of my car width). So I realized one of my weak points is the REVERSING maneuvers, thus I have to practice many many backing (of different types - straight lines, circles, zigzags). Then next time test, suppose the straight backing should never be an issue any longer...
I am okay with everything but the slow manouvers 😳 I didnt practice them enough. oh god. I am going to focus on that for the two hours before my road test. I hope I pass.I don't know why I am so scared to fail. I can take it again in a week if I fail and then Id know what I need to do to pass. I guess now I am 24 and just want to get it no hassle. you know what, I am gonna be positive, I will pass and if for some reason I do not I will brush it off as a learning experience and try again:) even though its not cheap o.o. I had no idea they would make me a 3 point turn o.o will they for sure or is that a depends on the tester and where you are or should I make sure I practice that.

I have been watching all your videos..you give all the details which is sooo very helpful and i am preparing for my road test in CT next week. Since i am in New Jersey i want to know if i can practice driving here on my Connecticut learners permit if I have someone with a NJ license sitting next to me?

Rick. If you turn left at a light on a four lane highway (and you are in the far left lane you should stay in that same lane once you turn, correct? Should you, without prompting from the tester, move over to the right lane after the turn or stay in the left lane util instructed otherwise? Thank you!

The only time you remain in the left is if the examiner indicates that you are going to make a left turn immediately. i want u as a driving teacher my first driving teacher didn't show me the knobs and switches behind the wheel and was on his phone some of the time instead of watching the student.

I know it wouldn't hurt, but would you say that this is also a great idea for any new cars & trucks you aquire later on? Especially for blind spots and spatial awareness (especially going from car to a pick-up truck, vice-versa).

I badly need ur help as i failed my G test twice.
I passed my G2 with very good report not a single cross.
I have a good driving record.
First time I failed bcz i gave test on driving schools car which i drove only twice for 45 mins each before test .
Second time i practiced so well on my own car on highway series 400 for 2 months,watched ur each lesson twice and i was confident to be pass this time.
But
Unfortunately just 2 days before my test, my van not that (car on which i was giving test)had a minor collision at school parking.which disturbed me a lot and i went into anxiety attacks like shortbreathlessness and hot and cold chills with nausea.
Luckily insurance call me and told i was not at fault and they are closing my file with no accident history on my record and any increase in premium.
But that all affected me a lot and feel unable to drive again.i practice again between the 2 days and went for test but i did so many mistakes like hard braking ,slow speed on turns,sharp lane change once and not following constant speed .means 92 to 96 on highway.
I need ur help as i lost all my driving confidence.
So much scared from driving.

I have a question! So the town speed limit is 50, I've been driving 40 because I don't feel comfortable driving through neighborhoods at 50km/h. When I get onto the highway I try to go 5km less than the speed limit, is that okay? Or should I be trying to closer to 50 for my test?

That being said, there are many seniors that have vehicles, but don't drive and for an exchange of services may let you use their vehicle. Also, there may be some rental companies that need cars moved around in a parking lot to be washed and cleaned. I am teaching my son how to drive, and I have a navigation system which activates the camera when in reverse. My son often uses this system when putting car in reverse. should I stop him from using it? He often relies on the camera more than he does the mirrors.
