I didn’t get my license until I was 23, and I’m quite frankly super relieved I waited. I wasn’t diagnosed with anxiety until I was 21, so when I was first learning to drive at 16 I was an absolute wreck every time I was behind the steering wheel. I would just imagine myself making a mistake and causing a wreck, killing or hurting multiple people involved, because my brain was automatically formatting the worst case scenario in my head. And I didn’t want to tell anyone what was going through my head because I didn’t want anyone to think I was incapable, so to everyone else I was basically crumpling into a heap of tears without any clear reason why.
So yeah, definitely glad I waited. Got a near perfect score on my test, and I use my experience as a reminder to my younger siblings and other younger family members that life isn’t a race, and you don’t have to treat “milestones” as goal posts as you race towards the finish line.
Thank you, for this message. I'm and a similar position rn. It's important that we stop stigmatizing anxiety late bloomers in general and when it comes to milestones like driving. I'm taking my time before I attempt the test again. I feel like I shouldn't worry about being judged and just take my driver's tests when I'm ready for them. ❤️

this helps a lot because i'm currently working thru my drivers license and it feels like i'm too slow to everyone else since my siblings got their license at 16 and my brother holds it over my head every time he visits home.
I can relate! I didn't get my license until I was 22 and perhaps it was for the best that I waited because I used to be pretty naive in my teen years. Moral of the story: you operate on your own time, not society's time. Society has a nasty habit of lumping people in the same timeline and category. They think that if you didn't make your achievements by a certain age, you're a loser. To that line of thinking, I say "SCREW THAT!" We all learn at different paces and that makes us unique. I've even heard of people who didn't get their license until they were 30, 50, 70, you name it. To those people, I give them props. You get it when you get it!

We would usually take the second exit towards the test centre, but instead, he told me to take the first exit into the city. but I was so nervous that my mind went blank, I automatically started going for the second exit, my instructor realised as I wasn’t indicating to take the first exit which is basically a left turn. He said “oh ok we are going this way instead” I told him that I was sorry.
don't feel bad. The kid with me in my car when I was taking Driver's Ed... the teacher told him "take the next legal right turn." stupid kid tried to take a right on a one way street going left :P He never got why the teacher was yelling at him until I was asked what was wrong. I sheepishly said "uhm... right on one way going left?" and the teacher nodded and when the kid still didn't get it... he let me drive the rest of the time w/o letting the boy do any more driving that day and it was our last day to drive too!

Edit: Great news! I passed the driving test last June, and I have my own car on top of that! I've been a successful driver for about 9 months now!
I got my driver's license at age 26 (this year) and I wont even bother getting it if we havent move far away from the city. Some of my friends in my age doesn't even have driver's license yet. What I'm trying to say is, dont pressure yourself too much about it ;)
Don’t worry about it, I’m 20 (gonna be 21 in a few days) and I got my learners license about 4 months ago and practicing to get my full license right now. Take your time and you will get your full license at your own pace!

I had the SAME experience learning how to drive. Basically a shocked instructor couldn’t believe no one had taken me driving on a back lot somewhere and that I really needed a basics session to get going.
However, I was not exhilarated when we started road courses, I had high anxiety. 😂 I got my license at 33 years old btw.

How did you find me out-
I feel so called out. That's all I played back then.
In my country, Norway (no i am not the nigeria part). the lisence is a 4 part thing. 1st bit is a theoretical part, that allso includes some verry rudamentory mechanics (engine oil, window washer fluid. Brakes, suspention basics), just enough to know you need to take care of the car, and be a bit Alert of something is off. and ofc what to do in roundabouts, intercetions etc.
ends in a test at the norwegian National road works offices.
Part 2 is a practical part, learning to control the car, gearshift (optional, but to drive a manual, you need to take the course with it, but a pure Automatic lisence is availabole).
Part 3: On the road, traffic flow, watching everything you need to keep an eye on etc.
Part 4: final polish, ends in a drivers test, with 2 random question, and drive in a route, premade but randomly picked out of a set number of routes.
The same for every thing. Want to drive a semi? do this, 3 times. first for the Truck without the trailer, then the trailer. Want to get paid for it? Get a Proffesional driver's lisence, it must be refreshed evry 5 year.

be happy, I have been behind the wheel once when my mom thought its be a smart idea to see if i could drive, she then got bored after 15 min and i was never taught (my brother learned from his older friends and had apparently been driving since he was 14, My best friend just got her license after going to driving school and I'm saving up to take the same class, it's like $200+ where i live, but nobody else will take time out of there day to teach someone who doesn't have a car anyway to drive.

In the US, you don’t have to get a drivers license to have an ID. You just have to get a state ID card, which you can apply for as young as 15 years old. It also cost half as much as a drivers license.
in canada we can technically just use our health card, which you get from birth

i remember watching this when this first came out, felt so envious and wished so bad that i could get mine, but in my mind i was convinced i'd never manage to drive. Well 3 years later i finally got it a couple weeks ago
I loved my instructor so much! He was so supportive. If I slowed down to a red light smoothly, he'd be like "Yes! Great job!" and if I did something wrong, he'd be like "It's alright! You'll get it next time!"
