I'm a Toyota fan and have owned several over the years and currently have two in the stable, but I am not real pleased with the direction they have went with their powertrains in the new gens. I prefer not to have turbos, but I really have a distaste for small displacement turbos combined with a hybrid. If I did buy a Tacoma, I would not by the TRD Pro trim, but still between these two, I'd have to go with the Ranger. I think there is more utility/useability with the Ford with an equal amount of niche fun factor for which it was designed.

But after reading countless comments, blogs, reviews and articles on the never ending Toyota reliability issues as of late, I’d wait about 5 years before I’d purchase any new Toyota. Because make no mistake, Toyota will address the issues, but it will take some time. However, I would not buy the Ford either. Ford takes the approach of let’s pay warranty claims rather than address issues. See their dual clutch powershift transmission, and all wheel drive PTU failures as proof of my claim. The factors that make the difference for me: I want reliability, resale value, and a truck that I think looks nice. I am getting a Trailhunter for that reason. Is it expensive? Yes. Will I have to buy a truck in the next 20 years? Maybe, probably not. If I do wanna buy a new vehicle, can I sell it for damn near what I bought it at? Yes. and quite frankly, the Ranger Raptor looks too plain Jane for me. Its big brother is obvious when you see it on the road, but I feel like the Ranger Raptor would go under the radar, which may be a plus for a lot of people. Not me.

Also, Tacos have transmissions breaking left and right on them. The Ranger is genuinely more reliable at this point and would likely last you longer. This ain’t the same as the old Taco anymore….

I can actually take my family out, or a few friends, and it won't feel like torture for anyone but myself and one lucky passenger. In this day in age, when so many trucks in the mid-size segment come with four doors, you can bank on me expecting those two additional doors to be usable! Its not that it "cuts" power, it just cant keep supplying electric power for long durations. The battery is too small and is only designed to supply short bursts of power. The biggest flaw with this design is the electric powertain. Baja drving, for which it is designed, requires a drivetrain that provides consistent power delivery. Electric assist can only provide short bursts of power. The majority of the time, the base 4 engine alone is the power you will be getting a majority of the time. That is why the ford engine is far superior for baja.

Insane price? ARB steel bumper $2500, rock sliders $1500, onboard 2400W power system for accessories saves you another $1500. You have just sliced $5k+ from the sticker price. You also get 22/24mpg where Ranger gets 16/18mpg. This gives you another $2800 savings on gas over 50k miles... so which one is more expensive now? If you don't need those extras then why would you buy Raptor in first place? It seems most people crying about the price tag have never gone offroad and have no clue what gear is necessary for such adventures. People that build overlanding rigs can see where the value is.
