  • Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a font and a typeface? Well, wonder no more because that’s exactly what we’re clarifying today.
Many people (much to the annoyance of typographic experts everywhere) talk about typeface and fonts like they’re the same things. But alas, even though contemporary usage often blurs the line between the two, they are not the same thing. Read more on

2:05 Legally, yes. Typefaces are not copyrighted where fonts are.

No, not the same. Movable type is still around and so too is its nomenclature. A 'font' refers to a specific style and size. Times Roman set at 12pt is a different font then times Roman set at 24 pt. The original use of the word font in the 1984 Macintosh operating system was correct. Fonts back then came in specific screen sizes relative to their pixel dimensions and style. A 12pt font look like hell if it was enlarged 72pt. It wasn't until the year after the Macintosh was introduced that the first laser printer became available. Then Adobe introduced a companion file that snuck in an alternative high resolution printing file for the crappy pixelated one. When the alternative font file was processed by a postscript laser printer, it no longer mattered to the laser printer whether you started with a 12 point font or 72 point font, they both printed out beautifully, but the confusion began. FYI, the word font originates from the container used to hold liquid metal. It's kind of like using a unit of measurement for specific thing and quantity. Think 'lid', but now I date myself ; )

    It's a distinction without a difference.
