After trying a multiple things with sticks and aiders, I feel your advice about using a one step aider (as opposed to multi step aiders) is very good. Multistep aiders sound a lot better than they are when you actually try to use them.

Double aiders would make more sense for someone not wanting to step up to the belt line for their first step... you use what some might consider an abnormally high first step and an abnormally long stirrup. However if trying to push the limits, things are going to end up reaching silly proportion in which the phrase "just because you can does not mean you should" comes to mind.
My sticks are 32" DIY 3 step sticks (which seem to be fairly close in proportion to standard long sticks (between 32 and 34") the step height is approximately 15" apart so a reasonable aider is going to give me about a foot and a half extra height, but a double will only gain me another 15 or so inches. For me it is worth it to carry an extra stick or two just in case I want more height (I actually have 8, so starting at 18 inches off the ground (not an unreasonable height) I COULD put a stand 32ish feet in the air.) Since they are aluminum construction, they only weigh about 3 pounds each. I generally carry 6 of them with my hang on stand.
Being a might overweight and out of shape, I do not notice the difference when I carry 4 or 6... it all feels heavy :)
Glad you have a system that works great for you. My set up works great for me and I really don't use the aider mich. When I climb to the first step I use my arms ro pull me up more than my foot in the aider. And on the way down I don't use the aider but rather slide my foot down the tree and I lower my self mainly by my arms.
I totally agree with you Matt. I think this video is a great example of the benefit of a one step aider but wow is that first step waaaay too high. I'm not going to attempt climbing acrobatics in 30 degrees and full cold weather gear. (:-) Not to mention there was no mention of the difficulties with a linesman belt or safety. I will do an aider with a max first step of 24 inches with safety in mind and not having the agility of a winter snow monkey (:-). Great video form the original poster and I appreciate it as you do a great job explaining the benefit of the 1 step aider versus the 2 step aider.

I went ahead and ordered a set of cable aiders for my Hawk Helium sticks and an extremely happy with them. They are plenty far enough from the tree, don’t swing in the breeze, and are easy to use no matter whether climbing up or climbing down. They weight only 3 ounces or so and work much better than I thought they would, even between sticks. Yes, though, they’re still not rigid, and you gotta be careful to not just step in the aider but seat your boot on the tree.
Appreciate this info. Have not yet tried the cable aiders. Glad you like them and are happy. I'm sure a lot of people also are curious about them and this comment will be a great help.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has trouble getting into an aider on the way down. Easy enough going up but coming down is a pain. Thanks for the vid. I appreciate your bluntness and honestness about aspects of hunting I thought were necessary but are luxuries
Glad you are enjoying the videos. In my opinion, hunting is best done on a simple and easy approach to gear and methods. Yet there is a mega billion industry built on convincing hunters they need this or that.
You should try a cable aider, much easier to use, also the benefits of multi step aiders are highlighted on mini sticks no the full length sticks.
Yep gonna try cable aiders when I get around to it. Since I only use one on the bottom step to strap aider works just fine though. Makes sense about a double aider on a mini stick. I dont use mini sticks.

Thanks Jason, that was great! 👍 I use one only on the bottom as well. I think I would like to be able to take it off when I pack up, so no zip ties. I got tethrd skeletors for next season. My hawk minis I had a wire one permanently attached at the bottom using the standoff bolt. Got the tubing, gotta hit home depot for the rest.

If you don't mind me asking if you use one aider and you have the upper body ability to come down without the aider and I noticed you hang your stick straps on sticks you already hung. Could you just prop your 2nd stick against the tree and use it like a ladder then pull it up?
Great question! and it would make sense in theory. The danger is if that stick slipped left or right there is a good chance you could get very hurt on the step ripping thur your calf or even worse. so I dont thing id recommend it. But it was a fantastic question. I like the way you are thinking outside the box!

Cable Aiders are way easier to get your foot in coming down and much more stable.. I use on all sticks and I'm an old guy 58.

Jason, how many sticks do you climb with? How high do you usually hunt at?
3 sticks, 1 aider. Usually between 12 and 16 feet. Can get max of about 18 feet.

I just want to get up a couple steps to get my camera high enough off the ground to be a deterrent to thieves. My thought is to drill a couple 1" holes through a piece of 4' 2x4 and cut a couple pieces of 1" conduit about 12" long and drive them through the holes for steps. I could use a cinch strap around the 2x and the tree just to hold it in place while I get up a couple steps to hang the camera. Climbing sticks are pricey
Love that you are thinking outside the box. The safety factor of that scares me and broken pvc could shred a femoral artery very quickly. You can get a single climbing stick from cabelas, bass pro, etc for 18 bucks. Steel and double rung but only carrying one it will be very light and fast. Thats what I'd recommend.
@@SamkoTradBow lol No what I meant by conduit is steel conduit! PVC wouldn't hold my weight lol So 1" steel conduit!
@@TheNewenglandboys just be careful. Seen many homemade steps and sticks fail. Love the idea of getting the cameras up high and out of sight line!
How did you get the rope into the tubular webbing?
Tubular webbing is open like a hose. So you just like the rope or pex tubing right inside of it.
If you have bad knees I guess would be a good use for the double aider
Good point. Shorter steps. But probably pretty wobbly with both feet in a strap aider.

Yep sure could be. I personally am not comfortable on aiders above the first step. But that is personal preference. I huntnin the rain, freezing rain, snow, etc. And I struggle to keep my toe against the tree in aiders in these conditions. So for me. Bottom stick only.
At my age I will just carry an extra stick, I have fumbled before on the last step coming down in the dark. I agree that one step aider on the bottom stick is very safe though.
@@chuckbert3117 yep I'm with ya. Climbing with aiders above the first stick is dangerous in alot of conditions or heavy winter boots. This set up gets me to 18 feet. If I need more like on downhill sides I will use the one stick method to creep the top stick up a few more feet.

Do you use your aider on windy days?
Yes. Use it everytime. Bit on super windy hunts I do tuck my stick straps and my dtand backpack straps so they don't flap around
