This is why indie devs are the best source of games. Or perhaps, it doesn't even have to be indie, they just have to be without a publisher pushing bad design for the sake of profit.

There are so many innovative games and some even bigger studios, but mainly individuals and small teams are creating awesome, enjoyable games! I really love playing video games to have fun. Some games are designed to be money making machines, and I don't really play them. Only Fortnite with friends to have lots of fun and things to laugh about. It has always been great. This industry is gigantic and has so much potential that companies like EA, who don't care about the player, but only the profit, are wasting. I really hope the gaming industry can continue thriving with new interesting and fun games and that everybody can have a great time.

A while back I made a presentation at school about how games are a great storytelling tool. Parents were invited to watch our presentations as well, so I was concerned that I had chosen a topic that was too weird or boring for them, but to my surprise a lot of them were interested and paying attention to what I was saying. It was so cool to share some of my passion for games, but even cooler to realize that games can be enjoyed by anyone, not just gamers!

I'm a dev too. Your game should simply be the best it can be. The monetization doesn't matter unless it's live service. Marketing, however, is definitely important for being profitable. If you make the best game in the world but nobody talks about it, then it won't matter. If it's absolutely incredible (unlikely on a first release) then just word of mouth will do its thing.
Good luck and I hope your game will be great!

Guess there's plus one to the people who cried count. I went undiagnosed for being on the spectrum up till college and it made it hard to make friends. I remember most of that time being lonely and not understanding how to really make friends. You can call me dumb and I wouldn't fight you much on that but things just didn't click.
Games became my escape and passion which helped me bridge the perceived gap between me and others. I've since gotten help and have learned more about how other people typically feel and have made many new friends but games will always be my comfort and it hurts to watch the industry as I grow up just become a cespit of GAAS and money making schemes instead of that which will make someone feel something.

I’m a solo game developer working in my first devlog, and this is exactly what I’ve been thinking lately. A game should be just another medium of storytelling, while still putting together every other medium. Art, music, writing, logic, everything. There shouldn’t be any more purchases. The game should feel additive because it’s GOOD, not because it’s designed to be.

Idk if all games really need a focus on story tbh. Some can just be focused on game mechanics and gameplay, I think landfalls games are a good example, like Rounds is a fun spin on being kind of a 1v1 roguelike, or 2v2 or ffa with a mod to increase player limits.
And TABS i dont think has much of a story in a traditional sense but it has progression in a campaign.

To be fair, as a System Designer "Addictive because they are good" and "Designed to be Addictive" can be very close together. Sure, there are the easy examples of Real Money Gambling disguised as Gameplay but part of my Job as a System Designer is "What are they doing and how to we get them to do that more?" Tetris is a brilliant piece of Design but the Psychological Triggers it uses are similar to those that make Gambling Addictive

Why does it have to only be about story telling, why can't it be about just game mechanics/gameplay/being fun to play/involve thinking like chess or Monopoly for example, these don't need a story to be fun and can be very social if playing with friends/other people? Games aren't just interactive movies. They can be focused on gameplay and devoid of story and still be meaningful and worthwhile.

@@Gallic_Gabagool if you think about it the best games usually have some kind of story, like Hollow knight, terraria, rainworld, Outer wilds, Risk of rain, Dying light, titanfall 2, Deep rock galactic and Elden ring just to name a few games I know. I feel like usually in games the story most likely forms after the gameplay and kind of the base of the game are set up as things can change drastically during development, and if youve got an idea for a story why not just throw it in?

I am a game developer, and as a child, I've always loved the idea of creating worlds and playing as God. To be honest, creating games (such as having to design the visuals and code the game logic) is pretty fun to do, but I'm really here to leave something in this world when I die. It's hard not to say that I am blessed to have everything in my disposal to do something I've always dreamed of; watching my imaginations turn into reality. I always seek and play video games that fuel my passion, and there are many game developers out there who I learned a lot from just by playing their games. To me, playing video games isn't just about releasing dopamine, but it's also about admiring the pieces of art that took countless exertion of effort to craft.

The issue is that we never heard of good games. Ads are almost always for piece of shits. Games stay hidden in the saturated library. Old good games are not played by new gamers, new good games can't break through the mass because there are too many games, and almost all young new player are only playing and talking about shit they (or their friends) have seen ads about. Only games with ads, meaning (today) shit, can reach people.

video games truly are the ultimate creative medium. making a video game means to become not only a programmer, but an artist, animator, UI designer, writer, sound designer, music composer, level designer, and much more. it requires so many different skills that come together to make something that others can experience. that is what makes video games special.
i think you hit on a very good point, that video games have developed a negative stigma due to the large amount of video games that are nothing but soulless, addiction machines designed only for profit. as a game developer myself, it is sad to see. but you look hard enough, you can find so many fun, creative, and moving experiences that developers like us pour our hearts into.

    Developer here.
Thank you for being our voice. You don't understand how passionate I am about game dev so it's really nice to see someone convey our thoughts so clearly. However. There is another side you must be aware of.
There are hundreds if not thousands of developers just like myself making games out of passion. Putting hours of love and care into our projects and sharing it with the world. Our issue is the fact that our hard work doesn't get the recognition it deserves simply because of these said cash grab/low effort games overshadowing us and drowning us out. Because of this, many developers end up giving up on their passion projects simply because of the fact that it seems as if the industry is built against us.
Thanks once again for your video. Even though I'm mostly quite negative about myself, it's nice to be reminded that there is hope. Things do get better, it just takes a lot of failing first...

I usually don't comment on TH-cam videos. Despite being on the platform for over a decade and a half and directly contributing to it via my line of work, it's not something I find worth engaging in.
But I want to share how important this video is and how grateful I am that it was recommended to me.
I went to university to learn how to make video games and I went to it with a desire to create and express new ideas formed from the experiences I had as a child, playing outstanding games that live with me to this day. But after learning the very basics of constructing a game, I was faced with teachers that hammered into me all the marketing practices and financial goals the video game industry needs to achieve for any game to be successful.
Safe to say, being told that I need to restrict myself to a certain type of game genre due to market demands, and thinking about its financial viability and long-term income before even a spark of creativity for a project is born was extremely demotivating to me.
After finishing my course, I ended up being a video editor instead of my original goal of a game dev, as I thought I couldn't survive in this industry without doing exactly what my teachers told me I had to do, and thus, think about money over my passion.
But this video gives me hope that I can still make games, not as a financial incentive, but one that comes from the desire to share and create experiences for the world to see. I want the work of my creativity to be something worth remembering.
Thank you so much for this video.

You mentioned art "losing to greed" and that started to make me think about different mediums and just how corporate things like movies and music have become. I do believe that games will unfortunately suffer a similar fate, and we're already starting to see it with the rise of unfinished live service games, abolishment of physical copies stripping people of their ownership and MTX and ads in full, $70 experiences. When people say "Oh movies/music ain't like it used to be", I think they're right in a sense, but that doesn't mean that there isn't going to be tons of independent artists on small record labels, filmmakers making the most of limited budgets and eventually small teams of game developers pouring their heart and soul into their work. Games are a unique and special art, and while it's disappointing to see much of the mainstream go the way of music and movies, I can rest easy knowing that people who really love games are going to continue making them.
Great video Juniper, I'll make sure to share this to get it the attention it deserves.

I believe, no matter if art is getting used for greed or bad, there will always be people who put their soul, heart and effort into their art and create amazing ones. It is enough for me to know that there will be game developers creating video games they put their effort and heart into, for themselfs and people to enjoy.

Being a game developer myself it's sad to see such art be ruined by greed. When I code games, I always to it for fun, for the gamers, for the experience, for the feeling of satisfaction and pride in my work. But sometimes I wonder how I would even compare to these industries, knowing that their addicting strategies are ruining their once beautiful games, their one unique piece of art.
I think it's time for people to reject games built to maximise profit, and support these aspiring game developers who truly want to create something fun and enjoyable, not solely for profit or greed. It can be really hard to find these hidden gems, but if we want to save the true pieces of art, we all - developers AND gamers - need to do our part.

You have a point, i mean what happend to Unity is a good example, but they are trying to correct that now.
But it's the same for games, mainly AAA games have just become money cows, there is no attention to what the player acutallly wants anymore.
There's also examples where games just get released, like cyberpunk or recently cities skylines, such a good game, but than they push the release a bit to fast.
I think the game industry should go back to where it is okay to take time, to make a better game for all of us.

And this is why I want to be an indie game dev, there is something so magical about a good video game. I don’t think the greed will ever fully destroy games as an art; as many as there are soulless corporate creations, there will always be those genuine, heartfelt experiences. Because I think a lot of people understand that games are not just an industry or an addiction, but a form of art that combines everything there is to love about art. Visuals, music, writing, ingenuity… if it’s an art form, it can be part of a video game.
Also heck yeah a bunch of my favourites got shown in this video, I like your taste lol

Wow. What a beautiful video! Really well made!
I am currently developing a game and I think that we are pretty influenced by comercial games nowadays...
I truly agree with you in the fact that video games should be art and made to express emotions and feelings, but it's really challenging to do that while also making money for living (with out adding adverticments to your game or something like that)
Thank you for making this video! it made me think more about what do I want my games to be and more importantly where are we going as a comunity.

Omori is one of my favorite games, bout cried just from seeing Sunny's face. I also grew up on Minecraft, on watching people play psychological horror games, the ones that make you think about not just life but what it can and is for others. This is exactly what I like about situational horror (which I know isn't what this video is about), the way that it reminds us that we and others are human. Even if Omori didn't have any of the jump scares or occasional horrific art, it's still a horrific and comforting reminder that we are all human and do shitty things out of fear, ignorance, and emotion. Those games are always the most meaningful in my mind because they make me feel so alive, and forces me to remember that others are too.

Wow, this is actually one of the reasons I started creating games, this desire to create a remarkable experience in the player's life, games are such a unique form of art but nowadays they have become just lifeless products, made to make the most of the players instead of just being an experience, a unique form of expression and entertainment. I'm still new at this (I think I've only been a developer for 3 to 4 years) but I'm always concerned about creating not just a product to be sold but also a unique experience that will mark the lives of those who play, there is so much potential in this area that has been destroyed by this current mentality of big companies.

I've been passionate about games ever since I was but a little kid. Growing up with Nintendo's Wii, then slowly getting into PC gaming with its miraculous world of indies. All of those have inspired me to start creating my own worlds, my own characters, my own stories. Without any of the memories I've made playing these now nostalgic gems, I would have never enjoyed life as much as I do.

This makes me think about that crowbcat Remember Halo video, this put me in the same mood. I miss when pretty much any game created was made with passion and joy and made purely to be fun. I remember years ago when I used to play split screen with my brothers, getting scared of the zombies in BO2, screen cheating in Halo, and quite a bit more. Just having a good time and laughing with them. I miss that a lot. Glad to see Outer Wilds in this video as well, that's been my favorite game for a long time, one of, if not, the most creative thing I've ever came across.

I've been trying for a long time to become a game developer and make my ideas and stories and worlds come to life but I've always felt held back on pursuing it, whether it's because of a lack of skill, laziness or just a inability to pin point exactly what I want to make, I mean hell this past month I've gotten so many ideas and inspiration by just playing some of my favorite games alone that it makes it difficult for me to stick with something and when I do get something going I hit a major roadblock that halts all progress and then I loose interest in the project and the cycle continues, plus looking at the state of AAA games and the gaming industry honestly makes me afraid of even trying to be a game developer, but I'll continue to try and hopefully someday I'll finally release my first game.

I think this is why I love indie games, animations and other projects done by small teams. Their producers don't just grab a thousand bucks and throw it at whatever the easiest money farming gimmick because those projects are much closer to the hearts of their teams. New creators with an idea, even just one idea for one project, put in the effort to share that idea for what it is so others can just enjoy. They may only make one game or series, maybe even just a demo or a pilot, but they mean so much more to the people that play them and devs who worked hard on them than a game that people play daily out of obligation and is updated constantly too keep people playing. Don't make people come back so they can keep chasing as unreachable finish line, make sure they want to experience it all again from the start. :)
Thank you, this was a beautiful video.

I’m glad I got recommended this because I am in the process of making a similar video. I believe the creativity that makes games fun and exciting is dying, not only in games but almost everything, a lot of online content isn’t for enjoyment or entertainment, it’s for a quick buck and the line “all art will lose to greed” is scary because it’s becoming a reality and my that’s my biggest motivation to make games that people will enjoy and not make their wallet bleed but I’m worried that some damage done by big corporations will be irreversible and that the work from small indie devs wont be able to stop it.

Almost made me cry.. This is so true, most games these days are riddled with DLCs, subscriptions and other stuff to make you pay more. I have so many fond memories of playing Mario Kart on the DS in the break at school, Minecraft together with my friends after school, even Mario Party with the whole class. Nowadays I barely play any games, especially not singleplayer. For me it has to be together with my friends, preferably local not online, to make it fun. Probably because that's what triggers this feeling for me. Playing on my own just doesn't do it.
