In Part 2 of this mini series I talk about how covering ground is your friend, by allowing ground cover to "work" for you killing weeds in one area, whilst your working away in another, this doubles or even trebles your workflow and helps you get things under control with less effort and much quicker too. The first option is a paid one and I think the best. Damp prrof membrane, the really thick black plastic that builders use under foundations of new builds will stop light getting to your soil and therefore stop weeds growing and also kill off any that are growing. It will also help you to dry an area too, if you lay it out in late winter to stop the winter wet getting at the ground, you can lift it in early spring and start digging as the soil will be dry enough to get on whilst the rest of your plot is akin to a swamp or lake.

I also spend some time talking about necessary tools you will need to get going and how to work out what is best for you relating to your size and why I use what I use. You should go to a garden centre or somewhere like one of the big DIY stores to get a feel for tools before buying as per some intructions in this video. I have listed one amazon link and that is for the Swoe, probably the best hoe you will ever use as it cuts three ways, traditional hoes cut on the forward motion only, a swoe cuts going forward and coming back too, making hoeing half the task (and effort) it used to be, plus a swoe will cut sideways too meaning you get in between plants, that has to be a bonus.

Steve when you mentioned cardboard wont last long before it starts to break up, you could have added when it does "rip it up in bits and stick it in your compost heap" cant wait for part three,I think its brilliant that you are passing on all this allotment experience.

thanks for the help steve. can dpm be used instead of weed supressing membrane and does it last as long. i think dpm is cheaper. also it it ok if you want to cover an area any time of year?
Enjoying your new videos for newbies like myself. I have inherited a plot with a wooden boundry fence that is casting a huge shadow, i would like to replace it but would be interested in any good ideas on what to replace it with..?
I have corrugated steel panels at ground level, dug in around 6 inches to deter pests such as rabbits, then I have stock fencing above that...Steve...😃👍
